You may not remember this, but all the way back in 2010, Chael Sonnen made huge headlines when he made highly controversial comments regarding the relationship between Lance Armstrong, his battle with cancer, and his at-the-time alleged performance-enhancing drug use. He later refuted the comments in a strange way.

This, by the way, was all before Sonnen's first fight with Anderson Silva.

If you haven't been listening to the news lately, you might have missed how Lance Armstrong came clean, and admitted to using PEDs over the course of his cycling career on Oprah.

It is likely to be the top sports news story in 2013.

Well, Chael Sonnen has been watching the news, and he is now firing a big salvo at Armstrong. Via Twitter:

Hey Bike Boy, once you are done apologizing to Oprah, pedal on over to @jimrome show and apologize to me too.

Apparently, Sonnen is taking credit for the comments, and is kicking the famed cyclist while he's down. Armstrong has long been a lightning rod for allegations of PED-use, and recently had his Tour de France titles stripped.

All the while, he claimed he competed clean.

Sonnen, ironically, was suspended after his UFC 117 bout with Anderson Silva for a failed drug test, stemming from a high testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio. The failure, he claims, stemmed from his TRT-use, which is necessitated by his doctor-diagnosed hypogonadism.

Sonnen has long been a provocateur. Over the years, he has picked fights with people of all walks of life. This includes fellow MMA fighters like Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort, Octagon Girl Arianny Celeste, actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, boxer Juan Manuel Marquez, President Barack Obama and more.

Sonnen is scheduled to coach opposite UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones in The Ultimate Fighter, with the two scheduled to fight on April 27.

ahh screw it ill post his comments anyways in case you havent seen them already:

To hype his UFC middleweight title fight with Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen has employed a simple strategy: Say as many outrageous things about Silva as he can think of.

But as Saturday night's fight draws closer, Sonnen isn't satisfied with just taking on Silva. He has now decided to verbally attack Lance Armstrong, suggesting in an interview that Armstrong's cancer was caused by the use of performance-enhancing drugs, and that Armstrong's support of cancer research has been nothing more than an elaborate fraud.

"Lance Armstrong did a number of things and he gave himself cancer," Sonnen said on Pro MMA Radio, as transcribed by MMA Mania. "He cheated, he did drugs, and he gave himself cancer. Well, instead of saying 'Hey listen, I cheated and gave myself cancer, don't be like me,' he actually made himself the victim and then went out and profited something like $15 million from this 'Hey, poor me, let's find a cure for cancer' campaign instead of just coming clean and saying, 'Look, here's what I did, I screwed myself up, and I hope people learn from my mistakes.'"

Sonnen was answering a question about the type of people who bother him, and he seemed to be suggesting that Armstrong is the same kind of phony that Sonnen says Silva, the UFC middleweight champion, is. For good measure, Sonnen threw in that he thinks Michael Phelps is a "pothead" as well, and Sonnen generally seems to think that he deserves to be considered America's one authentic sports star.

Armstrong, of course, has always denied that he ever used performance-enhancing drugs, and Sonnen has no evidence for his theory that using PEDs caused Armstrong to get cancer. Ultimately, the comments were just another attempt by Sonnen to get a little more attention for himself, and for Saturday night's fight.

He's wrong about PED's causing Armstrong to get cancer. Armstrong started to use PED's during his recovery from cancer.

He not only admitted to PEDS but blood doping, which i believe is the main way these guys escape tests.
Sonnen never gives apologies,so he deserves nothing, matter of fact,Sonnen is trash, can't wait until Jones embarrasses Him and sends him back to reality.

pretty much...the guy who gets caught for 17:1 levels is upset at the guy who did blood doping

lol i can't wait until jones tools him. he's kind of like diaz, he got tooled many times before, but it was never at a very high profile stage. chael got the one loss from silva recently, but it still wasn't as embarssing of a beatdown as it could have been. either way, it humbled him. diaz got the embarassing beatdown from bendo on the big stage

There was nothing embarrassing about Nate's loss to Benson. There is nothing embarrassing about two men competing for a TITLE. Didn't you start a thread not to long ago asking what gives anyone the right to critisize UFC fighters? Cmon Sisti.

Eh, it's typical Chael. However, I don't know why everyone is slamming Lance Armstrong. Almost every single top cyclist was cheating at the time, including the rest of Lance's team. The dude who won the five TDF titles before Lance Armstrong was cheating too. I'm not excusing Armstrong's cheating, but they did go after him a little harder because he's an American and it rubbed some folks the wrong way having an athlete from the US be so dominant.

Perhaps BJ Penn could come back and win some fights (at lightweight, hopefully) if he just did a little oxygenating of his blood. Done the right way, there's no way it'll show up in a standard blood test.
