Has GSP Peaked?

i_run_thisi_run_this Posts: 19,290Free
Honestly, Pre injury GSP was much better than this. He's 32 now
he gassed out against diaz in the 3rd, when have you seen GSP gas?
his takedowns are sloppy (compare this fight to his fight with alves...) He struggled getting Diaz down in the 3rd, not as explosive as usual
Got caught by Condit, was swept in the fourth I believe, couldn't break open his guard

I honestly think GSP is hitting the downturn and I hope he beats hendricks and maybe fights one more time to get the 10 title defences and retire. Pass the torch to Rory.

No he just had 2 tough opponents. Who else has he beat? Fitch is somewhat OK, Koscheck was never good, Shields sucks, Alves has been losing a lot lately, Hardy (lmfao), BJ Serra (lightweights)

I don't think he's peaked, I think he's been on the downfall for a while

    Really Sad performance against Hardy
    Sad performance against Kos
    Really Sad performance against Shields
    Decent performance against Condit
    Really Sad performance against Diaz

you're confusing being good with being exciting

the diaz and shields fights were pretty bad though

I thought he beat the **** out of koscheck, was very impressed with his stand up and movement.

If GSP sucks, what does it say about the rest of the division? Haters should hate the division!

I didn't say anything about being exciting

    I said sad

He should have finished Hardy, Kos, and Shields. Those were gimmie fights in my opinion, therefore his performance was sad

Not surprising he didn't finish Condit, and actually put on a decent performance. Did get rocked though

Not surprising he didn't finish Diaz also, but a sad performance. Diaz gassed him by the 3rd even though GSP was in the dominant position for most of the fight, and Diaz rocked him

His MMA wrestling has peaked, everything else has gotten worse over the years. He isn't losing in the octagon he lost to Greg Jackson. Kinda odd that when GSP grapples for 5 rounds Dana calls it a good job and when Fitch does it he gets cut.

I think he is getting to that stage where he just doesn't have the same love for it, also as has been said he will be 32 when he next fights.

It is possible, everyone has a turning point in their lives that it is just all downhill from here on out. GSP very well could be waking up one day and just sitting there thinking...screw it, wanna do something else with my life. Therefore he doesn't have that kind of fighting mentality he used to.
  • FroZeNFroZeN Posts: 4,762Free
The only way I could enjoy a GSP fight is if he showed up as the lion he once was. Dude was wrecking everyone and he was stopped and all of a sudden he can't even finish Dan Hardy? Come on...for someone that is supposedly the "GOAT" he sure hasn't been fighting like it lately.

Sure he doesn't wanna take damage fine whatever but he has the ability to wreck dudes without taking damage.

Ok yes i do believe he's peaked. Not neccesarily physically but technically and maybe mentally. His growth as a martial artist in the past few years has stagnated.

Physically i don't believe he's really waned much considering he's coming off of the knee injury, some ring rust, fighters sort of just now figuring him out a little more and his unwillingness for years to evolve and keep growing instead of just polishing his game and making it safer.

Fighters games are catching up to his and because it's not as easy anymore for him to implement his game he's getting tired, taken out of his element and beaten up a little in his recents fights but he still finds a way to win.

Just one further thing. As well rounded as he is and as technically sound and gifted athletically as he is his game is very limited to what he's great at and therefore somewhat predicable although hard to stop because he is soo good at it and he's still a great athlete.

He hasn't really developed anything new lately and since everyone is gunning for him and fighters are better now people are starting to figure him out a little. George was a far more dynamic fighter ealier in his career when he was hungary and a little wreckless but controlled. There is no more X factor anymore. He's lost that and i don't think it's coming back because he's afraid to experiment and let go a little.

    Well said StompGrind.

He doesn't fight to win anymore, he fights not to lose and do just enough to retain his belt. After his fight with Condit, I thought the old GSP coming back because he was taking more chances, but the fight with Diaz just showed he went back to how he was fighting before the Condit fight.

I think GSP is really talented. If he just goes in there confident in his skills, he could finish his opponents quite easily like he did when he was younger. He took out Trigg in the first round and stopped Sherk because he **** came in there and wanted to prove something. I'll always be a GSP fan , it's great he gets dominating performances and all, but he needs to take more chances and just go in there and finish, because he has the ability to do so.

no, he just fought two guys that weren't ****ing cans like usual

two guys who are dangerous standing and on the ground.....I'm not going to say they are well rounded because they are not....they both lack wrestling

GSP has never fought a well rounded opponent

You can perform at your peak for only so long. Besides the Serra fight he's looked unbeatable since his loss to hughes until recently... He may have passed his peak as far back as the Alves fight imo... look at his performances since then:

-Hardy has no wrestling and is a stylistically favorable matchup for GSP.
-Koscheck he was completely unable to take down and resorted to jabs to keep him away
-Shields was a crap fight and shields has looked like crap either side of this fight
-Condit has proven his tdd doesn't take priority so this stylistically favored GSP again
-Diaz was able to gas out GSP and stop a lot of takedowns
