Who has the potential to break A.Silva's record of most consecutive title defenses(10)?

Recommended Posts

With Georges St Pierre gone, which current fighter has the best chance of breaking A.Silvas record? Doesnt have to be a current champ, could even be a new comer who has potential in your opinion.

10 consecutive title defenses is incredibly hard considering anyone can have a bad night and lose.

If I had to guess of someone making it to 11 title defenses, Id have to go with Aldo. He hasnt looked as impressive of late but if he were to stay at 145, I couldnt see anyone taking that belt from him.

Aldo isn't long for 145 either way.

I could see him losing soon as well.

MM might have the best chance at doing it. He's on fire right now.

If not him then Cain or Pettis.

Who do you think Aldo would lose to?

MM is another one that has the potential to break that record. They would have to deepen the division quite a bit to even get him that many title fights though lol.

I agree with Cain but I couldnt see Pettis getting anywhere near that record.

It isn't an accomplishment that is going to happen right away. Truth be told, the person might not even be born yet. Never forget how important Anderson Silva is to MMA.

Agreed. This is just to discuss the current fighters that have the potential to reach that accomplishment.

Jones is the only one I see doing that... but he really need to get tighter with his stand up. Gustafson showed that his shot is stoppable even by non wrestlers if you prepare for it and since his GnP is feared he has to expect to have to fight on his feet more and more. People are going to prepare for this TD and it's going to become increasingly difficult for him to land it.

I would say Rousey, but she'll likely retire long before ten title defenses. Unless that division's talent was severely deepened, she'll have nothing left to prove after beating a few more people. Barao, if they counted his interim title defenses, would seem like a reasonable choice. Other than that, maybe Mighty Mouse or Cain.

I agree with this on the other hand I think she loses to Cyborg at some point in the next year.

I'm not saying he will break Anderson's record, but I'd say Jones has the most potential. He already has six title defenses, so he's on his way there. I know Gustaffson gave him a really good fight, but the rematch may very well go down like Chael's rematch with Anderson.Other than that, I don't see any immediate threats to his title. Meanwhile, the UFC will still be obligated to have him defending it, even though the match-ups won't be quite as competitive.

Cain: 31 yo, 2 defenses. Kongo dropped him twice and JDS knocked him out. I don't know who, but someone is going to catch him eventually.

Jones: =))

Weidman: =))

Hendricks: =))

Pettis: Injuring himself all the time won't help this cause.

Aldo: According to the UFC, he already defended 5 times. I count as 4. Still, he's 27 yo and has faced the very best. Aldo, Mendes wants to move down. He has a very good chance to do so, but I hope to see him at LW.

Barão: 26 yo, 2 defenses. BW is not very promising right now, and he got a great opportunity at beating Faber specially because it's on short notice. His other 2 big challenges would be McDonald and Mendes. I'm pretty sure he'll move up before that.

MM: 27 yo, 3 defenses. He has a great chance, but lets not forget he was dropped several times already.

Nobody currently holding the belt will achieve this. When Anderson hit mid stride he was an enigma and unstoppable, when MMA was in its youth. Now it's early adulthood and the competition is more even across the board in all divisions, especially with international recruits and new kids coming up. I doubt we'll see a similar clear dominance for a long time to come, until MMA has evolved another two times, to when strikers are immune to takedowns and wrestlers have chins of granite. Then we'll see Bruce Lee Volume 2 and it will actually be Boris Levin from Russia. He will be MMA god in 2022

Maybe the guy who just beat him twice in a row... and, if you are gonna start all this Wiedman got lucky stuff, save it.

lol

Weidman has 5 fighters lining up who could take him out, easily

lol

So does every other champ for that matter...

UFC 79 Grease was not the champion. UFC 83 Grease was not the champion. His first defense was Fitch. Cheating against Penn that should be a NC, didn't make weight against Diaz and Hendricks beat the hell out of him.

9 title defenses is being generous.
