Recommended Posts

Grand slam done.

All about the WC T20 now.

Thread for discussion on all the GOAT commonwealth sports - cricket, rugby, kabbadi etc.

The occasional Murican making insect-related gags also highly welcome.

They're really noisy this time of year where I'm from. Did you know their antennaes are called feelers?

And listen to this bombshell friend, the wing of the males have a large vein with a row of teeth like a comb. The chirping sound is created by running the top of one wing along the teeth at the bottom of the other wing. And even though they have wings, THEY CANNOT FLY.

It's probably a good thing they can't fly though. Because they've been known to bite humans. Did you know the rate of the chirping from their wings is dictated by the temperature?

Did you know their are over 900 species of crickets ranging from black, green, red, and brown? Which one is your favorite? Mine is probably green because it reminds me of Jiminy the cricket. What a funny name for a cricket right? Like why not Chris the Cricket? And what's with the whole sneaking into a kids bedroom window? Good thing he wasn't a black cricket or he might have been convicted for something.

Great info Jason, thanks

In answer to your question, red. Call me crazy.

Red? I never would have pegged you as the type. That's a bit disappointing to be honest. Never the less, great thread idea you started. Surely a thread so great will have a longer lifespan than the average cricket eh? Which is only a year.

It's just my guilty pleasure, but I understand and support your disappointment.

I expect this thread to outlast the forum itself. Mcmod will be along shortly to pin it or sticky it or whatever the technical term is

It would be a bit disappointing if this thread wasn't stickied. I would go as far to say that if I was a cricket it would hurt my feelers.

He's looking more like his old self, so I'm thinking the reason to worry is lessening.

He needs a century.  Still a bit uncertain around off stump. Stupid dismissal today - how many wickets have we lost hooking?

This thread wins thread of the year award

Thanks, but i'm aiming for thread of the decade.

If we play well, we'll steamroll India on our pitches. This has been proven in the last test and the first day of this test. The fact we've lost one test in this series is annoying because it was so winnable.

Woakes looks about as threatening as Wagner Rochas standup game so he should be dropped for Finn IMO.

True dat.

We've still got a big issue at first change.  Compare our current bowling attack with Hoggard, Harmy, Flintoff and Jones in 2005...I think we're slowly heading back to being a good team again but are an opening batsman,a quickie and a spinner short of being great.

Lol, winning thread is winning

Oh, and India are a bunch of cans.  We smashed them 1-0 in the summer.  The fact that England aren't currently 3-0 up in  the series makes them a bunch of cans also  ;)

Which part of the queen's commonwealth do you hail from good sir? I'm guessing South Africa? Or are you an Aussie?

We are indeed a bunch of cans, but i think maybe a steadily improving bunch of cans.

Wait a minute, who un-stickied this thread???

Cool, this thread is getting properly multi-cultural.  We just need some Indians/Pakistanis/Bangladeshis to join the fun.

Planning a trip to NZ next year, any places you would recommend to head for?

Hmm, England, Australia, New Zealand....this gives me an idea for another likely GOAT thread.

Thread about rugby anyone?  World Cup next year and we're coming to get ya!

Is it possible to change the name of a thread? I'd like to take this thread of the year and make it thread of the century by including all bizarre sports played only by the commonwealth.

Feeling confident about retaining the WC. Tiger champ, will you even get out of the group??

LOL we were playing **** for a while it's true, but we're currently 1 point off the No1 spot in the test rankings and annihilated the poms in the Ashes. Im cool with that LoL  B)

Lol, next series we'll get pounded without lube.  We've improved a bit since then but with Mitchell Johnson destroying people I can see us struggling to get to triple figures...

..over two innings

Welcome Cash,

Don't suppose you want a sig bet on who wins the England v India series. I've got England  :)

Tiger champ, fair play to your boys, they went from zero to hero in the space of 2 years. Mitch suddenly finding his groove definitely helped. I think you'll be number one soon enough, but am confident we'll get the urn back next time you're over.

with a population of what, 4 million? You still punch massively above your weight at cricket/rugby.

Always had a soft spot for NZ cricket, big fan of Richard Hadlee and more recently Vettori.

Chris Jordan gone. Pretty unlucky dismissal considering how hard he struck the ball. Still not convinced about Jordan but want to stick with him to see how he does. Ben Stokes has hardly been setting the world alight with bat or ball recently so its Jordan for me.

I know what you mean, the problem is Anderson and Broad are on another planet in comparison. Another great bowler to take the pressure off those two would be ideal. Maybe that could be Finn, Onions?

The worry for me at the top of the order would be Robson. We can't seem to get that #2 spot down.

England vs. India?! Indians aren't athletic.

Also, what sport are we betting on? Will it involve insects?

Over here it was weird. We had been at the top so long people took it for granted. We had a problem with retaining a set roster for a while after the spine retired, but we have found some form and stability.

Pup might be a bit inconsistant at times with the bat but as a captain he is fantastic. Mitch produced some of the finest bowling in memory, he was making people look like scared children, and he had great backup from Harris.

Your boys should be in for a better shot, but if we hit the same kind of form, not a chance.

Can't believe how many times we've been out hooking this series. Starting to think Jordan is more of an ODI man.

Finn has got to play. He's looked really sharp at county level.  Opener is definitely a worry but I think we need to give Robson this series and the next.  Hope they don't move Root back up there, i like him where he is.

....and a replacement for Swanny would be handy too

They are not athletic - you clearly know your cricket!  I can understand your reluctance to take on this bet given their poor slip fielding and lack of a decent pace attack on cloudy, seaming pitches

Yeah, you were so good for so long that the fall was always going to be hard. Losing Gilly, Mcgrath and Warne pretty much at the same time didn't help.

I'm impressed with pup's captaincy.  I don't think Mitch has ever been as effective over here - he needs a fast bouncy track and we won't be preparing any of those for him

They still show a lot of replays of the 2005 ashes series over here - now that was an awesome contest - the two best teams in the world at the time going toe to toe. No ashes since has been quite so nail-biting.  Still get goosbumps when i see the last wicket at Edgbaston with only 2 runs needed

It's amazing how much difference a fit Harris makes.  I'd say he was actually the better bowler towards the top order in the last ashes series.  But the sheer force Johnson was getting the ball through at just destroyed the the middle and tail order.
