Hey Mauro. Can you offer any insight into the current situation with Sporting Lisbon. I'm hearing something about fans attacking players in training and players trying to cancel their contracts.
Why the attacks? Is it likely that those trying to get out of contracts can?
Well, it all started when they voted for a prima-donna / alleged drug addict / kim jong un wannabe as their president. Bruno Carvalho is his name. Slowly but surely the guy became more and more of a sociopath. First he was kind of funny, claiming that he didn't own a single red object because he hates Benfica so much, then he started blasting his own players openly on facebook, saying that they were crybabies and stuff like that.
The boiling point was after Sporting lost the last game of our League, allowing Benfica to pass them and get the last Champions League spot. The players were literally attacked in their own academy by 50 goons, and there had to be a dirty hand in the Sporting organization to allow them in. Logically, many people blamed the president and he didn't do much to deny it. The following days, he said stuff like "stuff happens" and "we have to learn how to deal with violence in our daily lives" LMFAO.
The attack resulted in Bas Dost playing the Cup Final with a visible gash. The players weren't well psychologically. Rui Patricio says that he feared for his life. They went on to lose 2-1 to a much smaller squad in Desportivo das Aves - who failed to sign their UEFA papers and won't be able to participate in the Europa League lol.
Rui Patricio was the first to sign his resignation, but I don't know how that stuff will hold in court. 5+ other players (some very good ones, in the Euro squad) just signed as well so I don't know how it will end. Bruno Fernandes and Gelson Martins are rumored to be signing with their rivals Benfica and I'm not sure that would be good for their own safety, in this crazy environment.
I'm a Porto fan living in Lisbon and people are crazy (sometimes literally) about football in the entire country.
