Good for Kevin, but I don't think his comments were well thought out. It's more like something I would say if I was drunk in an interview or showboat pandering.
BTW, I like Kevin Smith. I think his heart is in the right place.
"I just wanted to make some f*cking movies, that’s it… And no f*cking movie is worth all this. Like, my entire career, f*ck it, take it.
It’s wrapped up in something really f*cking horrible."
Easy to say, in hindsight, once you have made it. For the same reason most of the actresses stayed silent, many others would. That's why Harvey got away with it for so long.
I know it’s not my fault, but I didn’t f*cking help.
Because I sat out there talking about this man like he was a hero, like he was my friend, like he was my father and sh*t like that, and he changed my f*cking life.
How could you have helped, Kevin? If you had no idea, then there's nothing you could do.
We tend to treat people with binary labels whether they are good or bad. We expect bad people to do only bad. We expect good people to do only good. That's our expectations.
Good people can do bad things or bad people can do good things. The bad that someone does shouldn't cancel out any of the good they did. The good that someone does shouldn't cancel out the bad that they have done. You can appreciate the good that someone's done while also condoning the bad that they have done.
That said, we do often balance those things out when we decide we like someone or not. Also, we tend to be more forgiving to some people than others. Also, some bad is just unforgivable.
According to Vulture, Kevin has now promised to donate all future residuals from his Miramax backed films to Women In Film.
I understand that Kevin is a good charitable guy. This, however, is a bit pandering.
It's nice that he can do this, but keep in mind that Miramax was a Disney company since the 90s until the Arabs recently bought it. Kevin wasn't profiting off of Weinstein. Weinstein was profiting off of Kevin. In a way, Kevin is becoming a victim of this mess as this is now impacting his finances and he was assumably an innocent player.
If anyone should be giving to charities, it should be the Weinstein company.
