You're about as old as I am.  There are still a lot of investments left in you.  My opinion still stands.  You will invest within 2 years.

I appreciate the tips old friend.  I am intrigued by Crypto, but mainly come here because the back and forth is entertaining.

I have quite a diverse set of investments at the moment, but I'm very strategic in how I invest.  I make a plan and stick to it.  For the next 5 years I won't invest any additional funds in high risk investments though, and for me, crypto's lack of basic fundamentals makes it as risky as `investing' on black number 37 at my local casino.  I took a decision 3 years ago not to invest in currency or in precious metals and crypto is riskier than both.

I'm sure there are those that will do well from investing in Crypto, and I certainly wish well on all from the fora who invest, but there is no chance I will be one of them.  We are indeed similar ages, but clearly have different attitudes to risk - I think you have a gambler's spirit and I do not.

If I somehow showed proof that I doubled my money by the end of this year, would you consider investing?  I'm in for $8,500.  By the end of this year, I expect to double my money.  In 10 years time, I expect to have over 1 million...and I'm very confident that it will happen.  Once it goes mainstream, I will sleep in peace and my money will go up exponentially.  You are a smart guy.  Instead of saying No, you won't - how about you do more research on crypto.  I'm willing to bet that after a decent amount of research, you will be sold and I want you to be sold because the more people get into crypto, the faster it becomes mainstream and the faster I make my money.  it's a win - win situation for both of us.

No, I wouldn't.

I sincerely hope you do double your money, but the fundamentals of crypto are unappealing to me.  I've done plenty of research - they're driven completely and utterly by sentiment at the moment and the anticipated spread is enormous.  Add to that there is literally nothing backing it and I'm still extremely wary.  Everything I've read suggests the way to make money from them is by taking advantage of their volatility (basically buying the dips), not holding as a long-term investment.  Right now, that has no appeal to me I'm afraid.

"Becoming mainstream" is a fairly vague, and wooly notion.  For crypto to become mainstream that would mean that people commonly use it instead of cash or electronic transactions to pay for stuff.  Not sure I see that happening any time soon, and if it does, there is no guarantee that it will consequently sky rocket.

At the moment, I have less than 5% invested in what would be termed a high risk investment, and that is still much lower risk than crypto by most common measures.  I have no interest at my age in increasing that %age any higher.  I'm actually anticipating that the 'high risk' stock I hold will become gradually lower risk, and that suits me fine.  I've done okay from this approach over a long period, so have no intention of changing it.

Btw, I'm not a bitter guy, so I will be delighted if I'm wrong about Crypto and your $8.5K becomes $1M (just as long as you take me for a spin in your Lambo).  I will have no regrets from not investing though because I firmly believe in sticking to a plan.

Good luck to you all.

Regards,

BS

Thanks Jason, and I really do appreciate it. I'm just not convinced about the fundamentals behind it. Why will the population at large start using crypto to pay for stuff instead of using cash or a credit card? That's what it needs to become mainstream. I don't see it happening unless we have a total collapse of the FIAT money system... and if that happens we'll have much bigger problems to worry about than our investment portfolio!

Mainstream is not crypto replacing the fiat and or for purchasing.  Mainstream is when major corporations adopt blockchain technology and then it trickles down to smaller businesses.  Think of Blockchain as that small atm machine at the cash register.  Big corporations used those atm for about a decade before smaller businesses started using them.  Blockchain will have a similar experience like the atm machine and in due time, it will be used by almost every business.

So I've been doing a lot of research and also trying to understand how investors like us are making profits and I came across a debilitating question which I have posed in the crypto community I'm a part of and no one has been able to give me a solid answer.

The question is this:  We here great things about Ripple the company.  Ripple has many ties and is doing business with many companies.  Let's say Ripple made 1 million for today  but investors like us who bought XRP made nothing because the price of XRP did not increase.  How are we making money from XRP?  It seems to me we are profiting or losing solely on the buy and trade volume of XRP and it has nothing to do with how well Ripple is doing.

The other debilitating part to that is this:  Companies are investing in Ripple but they are not necessarily buying a ton of XRP.  Instead they are buying shares of Ripple through traditional means via Wall Street.  Many of us are hoping and expecting institutional money to roll into the crypto market but as stated above, those institutional money are not used for purchasing tons of coins.  So really, how are we making money as coin holders/traders?  It seems to me we are making or losing money solely on the amount of coins being sold and or traded.  In reality, we are profiting/losing from each other as coin purchasers.

Dude... this is part of my reluctance to invest. You are trading in a currency - hoping that it's value increases and not decreases.

You are not investing in the success of the companies who provide crypto. You're speculating on the future value of a currency. If you want to invest in the expected success of Ripple then buy some shares in ripple, not their coins.

As an example, there is a UK mining company who has mining rights for a huge seam of potash, a natural fertiliser. I think they will be very successful and have bought a lot of shares over the years.

What I haven't done is buy potash. That's the same as buying coins. Doesn't mean you can't make money from investing in potash (or coins); it's just driven by different fundamentals and consequently carries higher risks.

My risk tolerance has always been much higher than most people I know.  As a kid, I walked to and from school on my own.  I would sneak to the corner store on my own.

As an adult, I've gone fishing and night fishing on my own.  I'm that guy that doesn't need to have a partner or a crew to go places.

I guess what I'm saying is, I am a risk taker.  To make it big, you have to take big risks.  I have A, K.  I'm all in.

I hope the reward matches the risk!

I typically have a higher tolerance of risk than average. My wife, however, is much me cautious. When we got married, after the whole what's mine is yours malarkey, I agreed to greatly reduce the risk profile of my investments. Back then I had about 50% of my portfolio in what would be classed as high risk investments. Now it's probably about 2 or 3 %.

If I was single and <30 I would definitely be speculating on crypto.

My strategy is to hold for at least a few years.

Btw, one thing that served me well when dealing with high risk investments was to set a clear sell point and stick to it. Decide at what point you want to take profits at and stick with it. I had a ton of shares once in a company called nanoco. Bought at 60p. Decided if they ever doubled I would sell half my investment. As soon as they hit £1.20 I sold half. Couple of months later they hit about £1.50 and I sold the rest. I think they got up to over £1.80 and then gradually fell and are now at 47p. I could have made more than I did but equally if they hit £1.80 I might have hung on thinking they were going to the moon. Something as volatile as crypto is worth viewing the same. Decide on an exit price and stick to it.

Again - good luck!

NO....NOT based on mainnet, but rather, the "build up to the release of" the mainnet.....there's a distinct difference between the two...I hope you can tell the difference for yourself...which is why you requesting I explain mainnet is completely beside the point!!!!

This is the typical Alt coin pump prior to the "release" of something they've been working on....same thing happened to XVG recently, same thing happened to TRX the first of this year (iirc). I'm guessing TRX could see even more pump then it already has prior to the 5/31 release, especially once we get closer to that date (week or less prior for sure).

good grief

This needs to be revised based on something new info....supposedly exchanges are freezing tron coins until after the mainnet launch so they can all sync and transfer...so we may not see a pump prior to the release and we may not have an opportunity to sell before the release.

LOL

I thought you meant an ATM, in Puerto Rico they were called ATH's - I believe it stood for "a toda horas" or something.  I couldn't remember him saying anything about getting it out of an ATM and was like "wtf?".  I was pretty high when I wrote that.

You just want me to leak some good coins, don't you?  I got this one coin that's going to do wonders.  if you'd be nice to me, I might let you in on my secret coin.

I can tell you're not trying to be nice at all.  First, you didn't LIKE my post.  Second, it doesn't sound like you're asking for favor.  Third, you're trying to goad me to say something with the intention of not even listening to it while ultimately trying to make fun of me in the end.  So the answer is No, you don't deserve to know about my secret coin and by the time it makes big news in the crypto community, it would be too late for you to get in on it.

have a like bro, also if its a solid project with a actual real use purpose I prob wouldnt make fun....most of the coins talked about here are scams and have rediculous objectives.

Let's go ahead and shut this down.
