The eye pokes make for one heck of an asterisk.

Recommended Posts

I'm not calling for a disqualification or anything like that. But I think there's one heck of an argument for both a no-contest and an immediate rematch. I mean, for crying out loud, it's not a legal move.

If an ironworker was balancing himself on a steel beam 20 or 30 or 40 stories up, as they are every day, and he got poked in the eye, wouldn't you expect him to give himself a moment? There's no way he's expected to tightrope a beam seconds after being poked in the eye by a coworker.

If you were watching Netflix and you got poked in the eye, you would press pause. If you were in the middle of getting a blow job and you were accidentally poked in the eye, you would stop the lovely lady for a moment completely dismiss the romantic gesture for at least a little while.

Eye pokes are a big deal.

Where is that picture of Stipe poking DC in the eye?  I can't remember if I saw it on here or not.

DC certainly played the Jon Jones school of distancing your opponent. But I did see one photo where they both had open gloves in each others eyes.

Ref could have deducted a point. He didn't. Fight went on. Big deal

I don't have a problem with DC. But I don't agree with how this fight turned out or the way eye pokes are handled in general.

I'm sure it was an accident. But…

...here's the thing with accidents. If you accidentally move a little to the right instead of moving a little to the left, you can get knocked out. And it was as much good luck for him as it was bad luck for you.

It happened in a split second and neither fighter really thought much about it.

If you actually move your arm a little this way instead of a little that way, your opponent could grab it and submit you in a kimura. He might not have been planning that mover setting it up or even thinking about it, but it just appeared for him. Good luck for him, bad luck for you.

Again, it happened in a split second and neither fighter thought much about it.

So maybe a fighter doesn't plan on poking someone in the eye. Well, maybe they should have had a little bit of ****ing discipline and kept their fist closed as they were striking their opponent, or it maybe aimed a little better as they were pushing them off.

It's a foul. It's always a fight-altering foul. You poke someone in the eye, no warnings, no points deducted… You should just lose. You poke someone in the eye, you lose. That should be the rule.

That's a great idea if you want the UFC to go bankrupt.

Nah, I doubt that. To compete at this level requires an incredible amount of discipline, training and drills. I think if fighters lost fights automatically from eye pokes, we would just stop seeing eye pokes.

I mean, for crying out loud how much discipline do you think it takes to keep your fist closed when throwing strikes? For every round we see in the octagon, there's 1000 rounds in the gym, whether it be sparring or hitting mitts or hitting the bag.

Could you imagine what would happen if you threw a punch at a heavy bag with your finger outstretched? You would break them. Have you ever heard of a fighter pulling out of a fight because he broke his fingers on the heavy bag by having them outstretched when he threw a strike?

For the MMA genius you think you are, and lets be real here, it is only you who believes that. You are ****ing retarded when it comes to the sport.

In this instance, I could probably say it would be pretty close to everyone.

That sort of thinking only works at the amateur level.

End too many fights early and fans will stop buying tickets.  That's not good business.  Taking points is the way to go.  IMO, points should be taken on the first poke in many cases.

I don't think too many fights would end early, though. I think if the hammer came down hard on this bull****, we would just see the end of eye pokes.

I think contentious to say that just because there was eye poke the victory should have an asterisk. In that case Jon Jones now has about 2 victory's in the UFC. Can even see Stipe poking DC at one point, I don't think either guy's was intentional its just part of the game and as long as the eye poke isn't debilitating and ends up being the cause of the finish im happy with it.

Pride gave the UFC the answer to this eye poke problem years ago and they still haven't thought to just copy their glove.

I'm not sure if this is widely known, but Ed O'Neill is a legitimate BJJ black belt.

Yes, it is widely known - especially here on an MMA forum.

The most annoying thing about eye pokes is these retard MMA fans only bring it up when convenient to further their argument. All eye pokes are severe or none of them are severe. You have idiots who will act like this eye poke isnt a big deal but Tony Ferguson gouged RDA's eyeballs out

I also flattered you by using what I quoted by you as a template for my playful jab. And even though you tried to insult me, that was my intention; to flatter you and to playfully jab.

I like Daniel Cormier. And while it's easy to write off a group of people, there's always that reminder that while it's easy to write off a group, there's always special individuals who remind us that we should not allow our prejudices to constantly burden us, to hover over us like a dark and dreary cloud. Daniel Cormier is that special individual.

But that victory wasn't clean, intentional or not.

No i wouldn't. I would smack her face with my C0Ck then king daddy face fk her furiously AND make her ball surf with her tongue till i skeet down her throat.

I would do that anyway through regardless. LMAO!.

It's not an insult to say you're racist, that's just a fact. Generally speaking, anyone who starts predicting race wars is probably a racist.

Calling you a cuck is an insult, and that was Cashflow.

Umm keeping your fist closed is easier said than done if parries and hand fighting at a distance are big part of your game.

That is only really effective if done with an open palm. It's a hell of a lot harder to deflect/trap a barrier or redirect a strike with a closed fist. In fact it's nearly impossible unless you have absolutely perfect timing, ridiculous accuracy at full speed and more power or a better angle to overcome any resistance.

In the chaos of a fight with abrupt changes of distance and speed some fighters just react that way by turtling their head and reaching out to put something in someone's face when there is a swift oncoming attack. It halts that pressure buying time to escape a blitz or some pot shot trap that was timed out of no where so it's a very natural defensive reaction just like someone covering up or leaning back.

If you notice it usually only happens when there are speedy attacks incoming and abrupt change of distance. This is a natural kind of fight or flight defensive instinct and it's that range where hands are more natural and most dangerous because you can hit with true power from all angles.

Where it's blatant is when things are slowed down way outside and a guy is probing with it as if to use it as an offensive weapon and if the guy has reach the opponent is either forced to keep backing off, circling away or rush his @ss fast.

There is only one guy in the UFC that made a career of that tactic.
