TJ Dillashaw opens up on decision to cheat

Earlier this year, news broke that UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw had tested positive for the injectable-only banned substance EPO. Dillashaw was stripped of his title, and suspended for two years by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for this crime.

Though he quickly admitted to his mistakes on social media, Dillashaw has been quite quiet since this unfortunate news surfaced. Speaking on Chael Sonnen’s You're Welcome podcast, however, the former bantamweight champion opened up on the ordeal in a way that he has not done yet.

Apparently, it had a lot to do with his need to make 125 pounds for a flyweight title fight with Henry Cejudo.

See what TJ Dillashaw had to say below (transcript via LowKickMMA😞

“I’ve hidden out, I haven’t done any interviews, I haven’t done – I’ve just kind of hidden away from – there’s things I’ve been wanting to say, but I didn’t, because I don’t want to create any excuses,” TJ Dillashaw said. “Let’s start off, first and foremost, I cheated. I don’t want to run around that, that’s why even I announced it when USADA was coming out. I didn’t want to create excuses.

It was like, look, this is it, I did it, I want to be upfront with you guys. I didn’t want to create any excuses of why I did it, I knew eventually I would talk about it, and this is now, it’s the first time I have. I was so into doing something that has never been done before. Not the two champs. Obviously, I wanted that more than anything, I wanted to prove I’m the best in the world, but was also to drop that weight class. I’m a lean 135’er. I wanted to drop the weight class to go to the 125s, and I played it off to how easy it was going to be. ‘I can do this, no problem, I always cut weight.’

And I pushed my body to the extreme. About six weeks out, my body started to crash, I started to get tired, I started feeling I didn’t want to wake up for practice. I test everything. I test my hair for toxins, I test my saliva for hormone levels – I want to be the most optimized athlete I possibly can. And I started crashing.

“I decided to take something I knew I wasn’t allowed to take,” TJ Dillashaw concluded. “It’s called Procrit, it’s an anemia medication that would help me, not only make the weight, but be myself. And, you know, I’m not mad I did it, because I don’t think I could’ve taken the fight. I’m obviously going to own up that I cheated, I got caught – it’s a rough one man. It’s hard not to hate yourself a little bit. To – I don’t know. It’s a tough one.”

What do you think of this explanation from TJ Dillashaw?

So now he is implying that he only cheated for the Cejudo fight ?

You could tell by his demeanor that he's a cheat when Cody said pre fight that the EPO is going to his head and that "He's on everything."

Cody is partially to blame himself for fighting like an idiot but this piece of **** pretty much ruined both of their careers now.  They'll never be able to fight a hitter with those chins.  They would take a dirt nap against Marlon.

it sounds like he's definately not the kind of guy to make excuses.

TJ has been cheating since the Dodson fight. His body completely changed and he suddenly looked a machine. Dodson sent him to EPO. Absolute bull**** that he has only cheated once for the Cejudo fight. Everyone knows now that USADA never tested for EPO, and the one time they did they straight away notice hes juiced

Well at least he manned up a little and admitted to cheating. Whether or not he's being completely honest about his history of doping is another thing. To date I don't think there's been a single fighter caught for doping that has admitted they cheated. It's always tainted supplements etc. I give him credit for that much.

Admits to only cheating for the cejudo fight ? Meanwhile his whole camp has said he’s cheated for years lol

MM had a good point about TJ dropping to 125 ...

Cutting more calories and water = less motivation and energy

tj overestimated the cut no doubt

Doofus stalker logic. And you wouldn't know a liberal if it bit you since fascists think anyone left of Attila the Hun is a liberal. Go anywhere else in the world besides your angry, sad, ignorant country (at least the part you choose to identify with) and you'd know a bit more about it.

But back to the issue. Giving someone credit for admitting to doing what all the other cheats haven't is illogical how exactly? That's right, it isn't. But no one expects much from stalkers....

Are the yellow vests still destroying the cities every weekend in your actually fascist country?? LOL

Btw dipchit, you're not on some super secret forum with thousands of members. There's like ****in eight people here. Unless I only post when you post, which if you look above is clearly not true, I can't be a "stalker" of you. I apologize that I don't let your idiocy slide, and it bothers you.

I had a better point when I said he's already chinny at 135 and will get himself knocked out in the 1st round at 125.  Then before the fight starts my play by play of saying Don't be surprised to see TJ get wobbled/dropped 4 times and pushed around is exactly what happened.  One of those wasn't even a knockdown he got back up from his second knockdown and Henry just shoved him back to the ground like he was Henry's b*tch.

Hmm. Thing is that some of the stuff other guys have got caught for are fairly common stuff in lots of other products. So whilst I don't always buy it, it's a fairly feasible story. EPO is much more specialised, and you ain't going to find it casually knocking about in an off the shelf supplement.

I'm afraid I don't see this as TJ manning up at all. He's just trying a bit of damage control as there is no way EPO ends up in your system by accident.

You mean to tell me you don't give TJ any credit for admitting he was cheating months after USADA was set to announce he cheated at a past PPV event, so he forfeited his title and went into hiding??

Me either. That's nonsense.

He couldn't use the tainted supplements excuse. There's only one way to have EPO in your system and that is injecting it.

Multiple fighters have admitted to using PEDs previously so this isn't anything special. Machida, Chael, Thiago Silva, Tim Sylvia, Stephan Bonnar, and guys as far back as Kimo have admitted to using banned substances.
