What if a "unification bout" ends in a draw?

Recommended Posts

On Sep 7 UFC 242 Nurmagomedov vs. Poirier, what if the extremely rare outcome occurs??

I.e. What if the fight between the returning champion and the interim champion ends in a draw??

Will Poirier keep his interim title??? Will he keep his interim belt?

What will happen to Khabib's championship belt?

I think the interim belt cancels itself as soon as the champ fights the interim title holder.

If it was a draw then the reigning champ did not lose. So I would assume they would either have an immediate rematch or the reigning non-interim champ would be upgraded to undisputed champ and the interim champ leaves with nothing.

Interim should be canceled since Khabib did lose the belt ...

However NewFC and baldy will obviously make an immediate rematch.

No way this fight ends up in a draw tho.

Either DP catches Khabib or Khabib is finishing him Khabib style.

You mean "Interim should be canceled since Khabib did NOT lose the belt ..." right?

They should legit have a mitb type tournament stip with guys outside the top 15. Not like they can come to the octagon at any time and challenge, but if they win, they can choose when they get the shot.

It would probably result in jobbers getting melted, but there might be a fluke Rocky type match some day. It has to be more exciting than what's going on now.

Interim belt is dissolved upon door of octagon closing, Champ retains belt. You have to beat the champ he doesnt have to beat you.

No clear winner champ retains.

In a super close fight, champ gets the nod (the exception being the exodus of mighty mouse).

Beat the man to be the man

So, do you mean the 3 judges talk to each other before coming to a decision.

I was under the impression that the judges give points to individual actions of the fighters during the rounds and after end of fight each judge gives his card to the manager or somebody like that who tallies da individual marks and give the outcome??

So, for example Judge 1 does not even know who he gave more marks to, because all he will have is a card (or compute screen) where enter 1s or 2s or like that for each fighter.

Nah no judge collusion, but in a super close title fight the judges are always gonna give it to the champ, they know who is in red/blue corners, they know the challenger has to beat the champ, the champ doesn't necessarily need to beat the challenger, just not lose.
