Aussie dollar closing in on 111 US cents

The Australian dollar has soared to a new 28-year high, approaching 111 US cents, amid increasing expectations of an interest rate rise and continuing squabbling over US government debt.

The local currency has been rising steadily in recent months, driven by strong commodity prices.

The Aussie dollar has been helped in recent weeks by a weak US currency as fears grow that the US government could default on its debts.

What's going on with my US friends and allies? You guys seriously need to get your **** together. This is getting ridiculous. If the AUD$ gets much higher I may have to come over this year for a white Christmas and inspect things for myself.
