Bobmyster
How does he manage to take down someone big so easily and hold them down. Stann is an ex 205lb fighter and a huge mw fighter. Props to sonnen but he's still annoying, sonnen will fight bisping in his first defence if and a big if he beats silva. But a motivated sonnen looks like a very dangerous fighter! Rex_Kwon_Do
His strength is really impressive. It crossed my mind as I watched the fight also. I never questioned why, but it's pretty noticeable the advantage he has over most. I honestly don't think its performance enhanced either. Years of grappling, combined with genetics, and grown man strength
GoToGuy
Wrestlers/grapplers tend to be stronger. Core strength and power from rolling around with people gives you a strength you don't get from weights. Grapplers have to take people down, they have to be strong. bluesy
As Joe Rogan said' date=' elite level wrestlers who have been at the sport since they were very young have "chimpanzee strength."[/quote'] Yea, it's functional strength and it's embedded into their muscle memory. You can't lift weights and gain that kind of power.
TheSinisterUrge
Technique son, technique. All thoughts of juicing aside (and remember, I am one of the people who claim Sonnen cheated against Silva), he was an Olympic alternate for America's Wrestling team and Stann has near zero wrestling defense. Tonight's match was a forgone conclusion, only very few people thought Sonnen would get a submission win (props again to GoldenAfro).
Moony
Yea' date=' it's functional strength and it's embedded into their muscle memory. You can't lift weights and gain that kind of power.[/quote'] The funny thing about weights is, you move your grip a few inches from where you normally hold the weights and your power drops immensely. I bet if you keep doing continually different grips and angles you can get some good overall power, but otherwise, unless you happen do be doing something really close to that one motion you lift in --- you got nuthin! StompGrind
As Joe Rogan said' date=' elite level wrestlers who have been at the sport since they were very young have "chimpanzee strength."[/quote'] It's absolutely true too. Judo guys have it too. Good technique and explosive power makes tossing people around and controlling them "look" easy.
