UCFMRE
I believe only amateurs are allowed to box in the Olympics. If you have already turned pro you're not allowed to compete. For some odd reason, boxing and wrestling are the only sports that still don't let professionals compete in the Olympics.

Pengu
Because you don't win any money in the Olympics And actually the Olympics sometimes doesn't prove who the best guy in the world is, I actually think the World Championships does. Because the Olympics you need to qualify for the team and if the best guy in the world technically has an off day during trials, they are out and don't make the Olympic team. World championships happen every year *apart from Olympic year* and there is usually more people competing for a country. The Olympic gold medal however is a more prestigious title. fobar
which is why they are considering changing the boxing. if they allowed professional boxers to compete, that would have a serious knock on affect to amateur boxing tho IMO. the incentive for young fighters to stay amateur to compete at the Olympics would be gone and the sport would suffer hugely IMO. you cant have a mix of amateur and professional fighters so the amateurs will miss out but, with every other sport having professional's competing it seems strange to hold boxing amateur still. the next natural step will be to allow the professional boxer take part tho

UCFMRE
If a country doesn't have pros then let their best amateurs compete. Gabri1985
i saw a few months back that they would only let guys in who have been pro for x amount of years, so the really big names couldn't go there anyway. I know there getting rid of the head guards and tops pretty soon. Also you have to look at it this way, why would any big name pro come fight at the Olympics and maybe fight anothe rbig name for the first time missing out on huge amount of cash if it was a pro fight. Just not going to happen.
