Stipe Miocic talks UFC On Fuel 5 vs. Stefan Struve

Great interview with Stipe Miocic - covers a whole bunch of topics, but I admire the fact that he is clearly a great athlete and competent at anything he sets his sights on, but also the fact that he's still a serving fire fighter but says he won't give that up even if he continues to progress up the UFC ladder.

It [Golden Gloves success] felt great and was a good accomplishment in my athletic career. I actually considered go the boxing route but ultimately I decided on MMA and feel that I made the right decision.

There was some interest [from MLB teams] and I enjoyed playing baseball but I took the road I took and have never looked back.

I chose MMA because of the challenge and the opportunity. MMA is growing so fast and has so many great fighters now, for me it was an easy decision to make. A friend of mine, who used to train at Strong Style, actually got me interested and eventually took me to the gym with him. The rest is history!

YourMMA.tv: Outside of MMA, you?re also a fire-fighter and paramedic. How do you fit those roles in with training and camp? How do you cope with the mental and physical work that comes from it all?

Stipe Miocic: It?s an easy transition for me to make. Luckily I work with a great group of guys who make it easy to want to go to work. But it?s not really like a job to me and I can never see giving it up. I?m fortunate to have a supervisor who allows me to work around my training schedule which makes it nice. I feel that just like in MMA, you have to be mentally tough to be a fire fighter. It?s not an easy job mentally or physically which is probably what drew me to it.

YourMMA.tv: Do you really plan on staying with the job if you continue to climb the UFC heavyweight ladder?

Stipe Miocic: Yes I do. My coworkers and the job itself is what keep me there. It?s not about the money at all for me. It?s about helping my community and being part of a great team.

Seems like a good dude.

Miocic HW champion 2013! Been saying this for the longest

I dont think so...

His stand up showed holes against Shand Del Rosario, his last fight.

He had no answer for shane's kicks. That would make him a kicking bag for the likes of Cain and Allistair

Also, I dont think his boxing is better than JDS's.

And against any 3 of those guys, I dont think his takedowns are good enough against their TD defence.

Yeah' date=' Struve takes a lot of punishment and Stipe has some good hands. One good shot and it's time to see whether the chin holds up. Plus, Miocic's wrestling means he can fight wherever he wants to fight I think.[/quote']He didn't get sub'd by Shane when so many others have so it appears he has at least some sub defense.

I like him. People like Bones should take note.

Though I wonder how long it will be before the UFC starts ramming the firefighter angle down our thoats like they do wih Stann's army career?

They didn't do it with Eddie Wineland, we might just see it on a few countdown shows

His decision is not very tough with the peanuts the UFC pays him.As a fire fighter he has job security and benefits as a UFC fighter he has no job security and at a base of 10,000 he would be lucky to pay rent let alone any plans of buying a house.

I didn't much like his first fight, look a bit afraid and unsure,i expect a better fighter the next time out.

  • 5 weeks later...

I'm really looking forward to this fight, two rising HW prospects

Ps. Stipe was a pleasure to talk to, the UFC should look to use Stipe as promotional figure as he grows - He's the kind of man who will help change the views of those who still see the sport as "Human ****fighting"
