What good does the UFC provide to society?

I think this is an important question. Everyone talks about "this is good for the sport" references, but what value is UFC adding?

Martial arts is an extremely long tradition rooted in honor and self-restraint. Do kids that train MMA today actually learn that these techniques are not learned to be some toughguy tapout wearer that wants to start a fight with everyone?

Does the UFC need to do more promotion of warning people not to ever use these techniques in real life. I mean people are effected by what they see, and with the emergence of people like Chael Sonnen or the Diaz brothers, will people start thinking its cool to learn these lethal techniques and still trash talk and disrespect people

It's entertainment and mma is an excellent form of exercise' date=' self defense, and discipline. That's the value that it brings. They probably should promote safety more to their audience though. You don't want to wait until it's too late and an incident happens.[/quote']

Very good post...and that actually is a good answer

My main concern is that martial arts is supposed to teach people self-defense, not to use it to provoke people. I just hope they all teach the audience that these techniques are thousands of years old and it's a mixed method now, but it still carries the same honor of only being used in self-defense

Boxing in its hey-day was way bigger then MMA is at this point. It met all of the same criteria you just mentioned, i.e. violence trash, talking. It doesn't seem to have made too much of an impact.

I know this isn't converse to what you are saying but my philosphy is parenting is for ... shocker... parents. If you don't want your kid to be a jerk dont raise a jerk.

Kids throw hands and trashtalk everyday trying to move like their favorite boxer. The problem now is that kids are starting to see what triangle chokes and Kimuras are. A lot of these moves are designed to kill or break limbs.

Again I feel it comes down to parenting. WWE, or WWF as I knew it, was huge back in the day and I can remeber trying to body slam my brother but when things got out of hand my parentsstopped it.

Also just as there isnt a signifcant danger in kids punching each other in the face - because they dont know how - the same would, in most cases, hold true for limb breaking and killing

A triangle and a lot of other submission moves are very very easy to learn. There is a very thin line of continuing to fight to get out of a submission and having everything fade to black. If you're fighting with fists or whatever then you might get your nose broken, lose some teeth, or get knocked out for a bit. Getting choked to death is a completely different thing. It has a lot to do with parenting but we know that parents aren't perfect. My thing is if putting a "do not try this at home" message up, gets the attention of kids or even lets parents know that this stuff is for real and prevents one death, then I think it was worth it.
