it's funny because if someone on an MMA message board said they didn't know who jon jones was you would laugh uncontrollably at that. yet, if you ask the average person on the street who jon jones is they would have no clue

so who do you think are the top 5 most household names in MMA for people that don't really watch

i'd go with

brock

rousey

gsp

silva

kimbo

Kimbo - Youtube Brawler

Brock - WWE superstar

Rampage - A-Team

Chuck Lidell - Dancing with the stars

Randy Couture - Movies most notably the Expendables.

Honorable Mention: Gina Carrano - Movie and they probably heard about this mma chick that fought this dude called Cyborg.

This

What he said

What they all said, although not in this order. Kimbo would be at the bottom of the list.

The title asked for "mma stars". Why the **** is Kimbo on anyones list...

I should probably clarify since Kimbo is not an MMA star...let's just say anyone who has been in the UFC or another reputable MMA organization (SF, Pride, Bellator)

I'd say

1. Rampage - A-Team and other things

2. Liddell - Dancing with the Stars is HUGE and so many people that no nothing about MMA have asked me about Liddell when he was on this show

3. Kimbo - So many people that no nothing about MMA will say "do you know kimbo slice?"

4. Brock - WWE and UFC main eventer

5. Silva - If the casual fan knows any straight-up fighter it would be him

Any list that doesn't have Brock as #1 is wrong. WWE = most watched TV program and most twitter followers in the world. He is the most known' date=' and it ain't even close.[/quote']

you're probably right...he is the biggest star too, which is supported by the fact that no PPVs do as well as those headlined by Brock

2-5 is a tossup as far as order goes but there's some obvious names that are bigger than others

i doubt anyone outside the ufc world knows who chris weidman is

Rampage Jackson

Kimbo Slice

Brock Lesnar

Randy Couture

Tito Ortiz

Chuck Liddell could be swapped out for Tito for the #5 spot I suppose. Guys like GSP, Anderson, Jonny Jones and Sonnen are also right on the bubble - ditto for women Rousey or Gina - however I don't think your average "non-MMA" individual would have heard of them, or remembered them if they had. That's not to say it's always going to be like that - there are a number of athletes that I am aware of even if I don't follow their sport, however I don't think MMA has saturated the media market to quite that degree yet.

Rampage and Couture both have had big movies, so they're pretty much locked in people's minds. Kimbo had those EliteXC fights that were more heavily covered than any UFC event to date (plus, he's got that "OMG!" kind of look about him that's hard to forget. Brock is a huge name because of his WWE, his failed NFL run, and his success within the UFC. Tito makes it for being the poster boy of the industry when it first began to expand as well as being Mr. Jenna Jameson and popping up at random celeb events.

1. Brock WWE

2. Chuck- one of the biggest stars of the UFC in his day and now. Had appreances in TV shows and Movies.

3. Chael Sonnen- Just his fight alone with Silva got him well known. he was on a bunch of sports talk shows on espn and also has a best selling book out.

4. Wanderlei Silva- Loved in Asia, Loved in USA, Loved in Canada, Loved in Brazil. His style is just crowd pleasing.

5. Jon Jones- Biggest star in the UFC today, signed with Nike, has two NFL brothers, and his DUI.

By your definition, Herschel Walker should be on there above Kimbo.

That is a great point. All of the list so far have been made with just North America in mind. If you figure worldwide, guys like Silva and Fedor would probably make the list.

Another good point. Herschel Walker might be above a few people on the list, but most younger people probably have no idea who he is.

if Brock and Kimbo are recognisable as MMA stars for people that dont watch MMA, then MMA for it to be as recognisable as a complete sport like boxing or Soccer etc, has a long, Loooooooooooooooooong way to go.

right now, UFC isnt a sport for me, its an entertainment product.

NBA is an entertainment product to' date=' but theres fouls, penalties, real rules, that arent shades of grey, they are black and white. The ref cant just stop the action on the court when he feels like it becuase its not exciting enough for the crowd.

Until theres fouls/penalties that are clear and crystal and the ref is only allowed to stop the action when something is illegal, not just for entertainment purposes, then i wont consider it to be a real sport.[/quote']

What is a foul in basketball? Oftentimes what is called and what isn't is just as controversial as some of the ref's calls in fights. Same can be said for holding and pass interference in the NFL. The difference is, there are some NFL and NBA refs with 20+ years experience. The same can't be said for MMA judges and refs.

Although your comparison to the NBA isn't valid, your point is. MMA needs to get far better refs and judges before they become a true mainstream sport.
