JBJF Posted September 4, 2012 Report Share Posted September 4, 2012 they taught them various words and they would often release the birds when out at sea. when the bird returned it would repeat something like land, boat, or nothing and the sailors would use this information as a guide as what to do next. if the bird came back and said land than they would know they had a day or 2 travel before they hit land again. if the bird came back said boat then they would know there was a boat nearby they could take. if the bird came back and said 'nothing' then they knew they needed to hunker down and continue to travel in the direction they are traveling. many times the 'nothing' response would invoke sea madness type of behavior and many individuals would 'walk the plank' having disobeyed orders from the captain. you're welcome.
