Dan Henderson injured his knee last month, forcing him out of a bout against Jon Jones at UFC 151. Lyoto Machida subsequently turned down a bout with Jones for UFC 152, a move which pushed him out of a guaranteed title shot following his UFC on Fox 4 knockout over Ryan Bader.

Now, the two light heavyweight competitors could be facing off against one another to determine the next #1 contender for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

According to a report from Dave Meltzer at MMAFighting.com, UFC President Dana White quipped on Thursday to a group of reporters that the UFC is targeting a bout between Henderson and Machida later this year. Meltzer confirmed further that it was the direction the UFC is currently looking at pursuing.

There's no date set for the bout, and it hasn't yet been agreed to, but it would provide a clear number one contender in the division depending on when the bout took place.

Machida needs to keep the distance in this fight, time his attacks, and hit hard, and keep his guard up. Machida needs to not make the mistake he made against Shogun in their second bout. He needs to becareful of his straight left and Hendo's big right meeting him. I dare say Machida should even try utilizing his wrestling and jiu-jitsu in this. The problem Machida will have against Hendo is that Hendo is a machine and will keep on coming putting pressure. The dudes chin won't break against Machida's attacks.

Machida is an unusual puzzle, on the one hand Shogun beat him by running at him after the exchanges and catching him dropping his hands circling out, and Hendo could very well do that also, on the other hand Bader got smashed with a straight punch trying to run in and catch him... the burst have to be timed correctly, but Hendo could do it... does he have the speed to cover the distance? I dunno, if hendo's gonna win, he'll win in round 1.

Henderson doesn't have the gas tank to stay competitive for more than two rounds.

He has the ground game of a turtle on his back.

It's kinda obvious what Machida should do for this fight.

I don't know if Machida has the chin to make it past 2 rounds with Dan. He can back up all he wants, but if Dan lands that H bomb one time its going to be lights out.

Dan Henderson has the ability to KO anyone in the division with his overhand right and that's going to be a factor in all of his fights. Barring that, however, I think he might have trouble with Machida's striking game. Lyoto's takedown defense is good enough to fend off Dan's wrestling, and I think he can land strikes in later rounds when Hendo gets tired. I could see this going past the first few rounds, then Lyoto picking Hendo apart when the latter starts dropping his guard more and winging big punches.

If Hendo fights how he fought In pride he wins.

Be explosive but dont rush in. go for trips and sweeps not straight Takedowns. GnP

If Machida fights how he fought Tito Machida wins.

Be calm, collected. Don't take him lightly but explode at just the right moment. Henderson body has been in wars so go for body shots Knees in the clinch left kick to the liver.

Machida takes this....he will circle and evade round after round to a UD. Hendo will simply stalk and hope to land the h bomb. Not excited for this fight.

This might very well happen. I wonder what it would look like if Dan Henderson decides to wait for Machida to make a move and not be the one to engage haha I bet they would be circling around the octagon for the whole fight.
