Bravo13
I think what you are talking about comes down to whether you are a UFC fan, or a MMA fan. We were just having this discussion the other day. Personally, I am a MMA fan. I go to every local show I can.. I catch every event on tv.. and I rent every UFC ppv. My son and I run a T-shirt company to sponsor local fighters. (Not at the big leagues yet). I don't find fights that are technical boring. (example.. Fabers last fight in Calgary) Loved it, even though the drunks in the crowd just wanted them to start windmill punching and wailing on each other. As a "hard core fan", I care very much about the UFC. Which I suppose would be obvious by the fact that I mod here as a volunteer. I don't think hard core fans HAVE to care about the UFC, but they (we) want to. There are other organizations up and coming that have some big name main events and will get viewers. But the UFC has always led the way in getting the sport to where it is today.

I have my beliefs on being a fighter, there's a reason why Mike Tyson is forever loved and hyped and the Klitchko's are hated on and said to not be that good but the Heavyweights of today in boxing are just that bad. That said I don't find most fights boring, I mean I found Shogun vs Vera boring no doubt, I didn't really enjoy Bonnar vs Griffin either, some of Fitches fights are pretty bad and the reason GSP annoys me so much is because it's so clear he's capable of finishing and being so dynamic, but his opponents offer no resistance so it's their faults too. 2. I watch One_FC, Strikforce, KOTC, Bellator pretty normally and other events and organizations randomly. I don't buy into " the best are in the UFC " pretty sure a guy like Patricky Freire or Pat Healy could of beaten guys like Barboza or Guillard even when they were riding their most momentum and nobody hardly even knows who these guys are....and those were 2 huge UFC Hypejob contenders. The UFC has the deepest base of talent and most of the best fighters, but that doesn't mean there aren't fighters more skilled or with more potential elsewhere. I enjoy watching Bellator sign guys like Koreshkov or seeing Cosmo Alexander a multiple time Muay Thai and Kickboxing champion get out struck in his MMA debut by a fellow 0-0 MMA fighter with just a karate backround...seeing 2 rising stars run through tournaments with sick credentials, records and performances that are usually pretty young clash and fight eachother...interests me a lot more than seeing Forrest, Tito, Hughes, Rampage, Shogun, Kongo, Mir, Wanderlei, you get it.... 3. I think the UFC has hit a rough patch but has the potential within the next 1-2 years to start getting pay per view sales in the millions several times a year and even those epic events that break 2 million seldom. The UFC hit a really rough patch with the 2 FOX cards being miserable and then the 3rd and 4th being awesome but viewers being so much lower because of theeir first impression, every pay peer view card this year has been mutilated by injuries ( PS IDIOTS if you think these injuries are because there's too many events YOU ARE AN IDIOT, fighters are still fighting 2-3 times a year in the UFC so injury rate shouldn't change and ironically guys like PhiL Davis or Cowboy who are very active never have injury problems. ) Bellator and One_FC are taking really interesting approaches, if they stay really persistent and passionate, don't sell out I could see one reach a decent level but I don't think we'll see the UFC rivaled in the next `10 years. The UFC needs to be more international it's really Brazil, US with splashes of canada and UK. They need to target Russia and all the other smaller Slavic countries ( very fight oriented and athletic culture and men ), Argentina, China, India ( middle east in general ), Mexico, yeah....they've done a terrible job at this. They need to get to the bottom of all these pulling out of fights nobody has given me 1 reasonable idea as to what it's happening like this all of a sudden, no one in the UFC even. 4. Finishes don't = exciting to me. Some of the best fighters ever were decisions.....love watching Bantamweights even though they aren't " finishers " a lot of guys who force finishes like Leben, Guillard, Robbie Lawler, Shogun that I don't really appreciate their skills. Granted there's a lot of ruthless finishes who I do adore watching, you get what I'm saying. Me_Against_The_World
If Pride was still around I would def be watching that over UFC. 1. Rings for MMA are retarded. 2. The yellow car system is demeaning to the sport. 3. I never liked the headstomps, soccer kicks or knees to a downed opponent ( in that order ) 4. Elbow are necessary, Muay Thai is one of the most prevalent sports in the entire world and elbows are some of the most effective strikes possible. They're also needed for when guys defense to being taken down is wrap yourself around your opponent and hold them until you get a standup...Yup Elbows are AWESOME. 5. 1, 10minute round and then a 5 minute round is too random, all rounds need to be the same amount of times ( I'd like to see a .5 system in tact and 4, 5minute rounds and 6, 5minute rounds though ) because too many guys cardio suck **** beads. 6. Pride had more spirit than the UFC has eveer, that's why it's so beloved and spirit cannot be emulated we know this, the organization itself I didn't like the rules and way things were ran seemed like a big mess. The fighters and eneergy was great. Pride is gone, it was needed for MMA to progress.
WalkLikeAWarrior707
I'll watch any fight from any promotion. I just love anything to do with any kind of martial arts. That being said the UFC is my favorite promotion and I think they have the best of the best. So I would much rather prefer watching the UFC over Strikforce or Bellator most of the time. But Bellator and Strikeforce also have some great fights and great fighters that I'm sure would do very well in the UFC. I don't complain about injuries and boring fights really because it's a sport. It's gonna happen. Not every fight is gonna be an absolute barn burner. Not every fighter is exciting. You need that balance, it's just the way it is. No need to ***** about it like a little kid. Not sure if it will lean one way or the other in the future but I think they need a healthy does of both to be successful. You gotta have both sides, you gotta have the boring fights to appreciate the exciting ones. And you gotta have the technical fights to appreciate the brawls. I think if you train martial arts and understand the sport on that level then you will appreciate the technical fights more and if you are a casual fan than you will most likely want to see brawls and crazy fights more. I love brawls but I can also appreciate technical fights. Don't like boring fighters though there is a difference between being boring and technical. You can be technical and still be exciting. Seems like most fans are just casual fans who don't fully understand the sport. Never trained or gone through what they have. They just want to be entertained. Which is unfortunate because IMO you can't fully appreciate the sport if you have never trained any kinds of martial arts before. I hate when people are so easy to critize fighters and every little thing they do when they have never been in their shoes. It's too easy to sit on the sidelines and talk. 5 star thread, props on getting some coochie too.

Refs should stay the hell out of the fight and only stop it if something illegal is happening not stop it because people in the crowd are booing and it should have nothing to do with entertainment. A sport is a sport, if its fun to watch great. But really the FUN watching element should have nothing to do with the sport itself. Soccer goes on for 90 minutes and theres barely any goals...do the refs stop the action to have more goals? thats a sport, because it is what it is, the rules are what they are. you either like the sport or you dont. It shouldnt be changed to make peopel HAVE to score goals, just to help stop the booing from the crowd. If sports were just pieces of entertainment, Soccer wouldnt exist. Do you see a ref in soccer stop the show to encourage goals? no you dont, because its a sport and the ref should have nothing to do with the outcome, unless its a mistake on the ref's part with decision making throughout the game. I agree with you, MMA should not become sports entertainment. if it does it will lose all credibility. If peopel want sports entertainment thats what the WWE is for. Its designed to be entertertainment only. UFC should not be an entertainment product. I want to see the BEST fighters in the world proove that their style can not be beaten to be champion. If they happen to do it in exciting fassion? thats great, ill take it, but if they happen to have a dominant style but they are boring ? SO BE IT. SO BE IT.[/quote'] There are many reasons why Soccer is more popular than any of the American national sports. It is watched, played and enjoyed the world over for many reasons. For example, at the top level, you don't have to be a physical freak to play (as is a near necessity in sports like American Football and Basketball). It is a game of skill and tactics but good fitness is also a must (unlike, say, Baseball). Soccer (it's football by the way but I won't waste too much breath here, or simply 'the Beautiful Game' will do) is the most played sport in the world for a reason, guy. And not everyone in the world has TV-driven 12 minute attention spans. No one else plays your national sports, and that's just the way you like it. No one likes a loser, eh?.. Little_Kang
first and foremost' date=' mods if you feel you must move this thread feel free but i feel this has a lot to do with the UFC.....and havent started a thread in this section in a while and chances are it wont even get replies lol so, i pose a few questions in this thread, you can hate or say tl/dr it doesnt matter but ill finally get to my poin(s)..... i make this thread as a person that watches MANY mma promotions and enjoy them all a lot, including the UFC but do you? 1. do you want to watch "the best" and complain about boring fights and anything else you can(injuries, trainers, match ups, etc.).... because these fighters are the "best of the best" but paid so much more in the UFC compared to other promotions they have more to lose(thus "boring or safe fights" or people with stage fright hell there's hundreds of reasons fighters get gun shy in the UFC) 2. do you only watch the UFC because its the only "big deal" in mma and nothing else truly matters in most peoples eyes("if hes not winning in the ufc hes fighting cans" etc.) or....would you watch and talk more about other promotions more if they had more exposure/coverage/availability/hyping world/nation wide(fights tend to be more exciting and memorable when you dont have anything to lose and your just trying to make it to the UFC for the "big bucks" or just fighting just to fight because they love it and and wanna put food on the table and pay rent) 3. do you think the sport will start leaning toward other promotions getting bigger because they have the "exciting" go for the finish fights with the young and up and comers trying to go balls out to get to the big show(UFC) or make their promotion the new big show.... 4. basically i made a thread about this a very long while back that most of you never saw about would you rather watch 2 big names fight to a so called "boring" decison or 2 low key fighters go balls out for the finish until someone is done... 5. overall point...[b']is this gonna turn into a sport that is basing their success on entertainment over technical abilities during fights([/b]i know its never a guaranteed "exciting/finished/crazy battle" fight no matter where two people are fighting) but with so many people complaining about fights and injuries and match ups and so on....i feel like all people wanna see is finishes and dont respect the technique and training that goes into the sport....... p.s, i fully support the UFC and will watch any fight and wont find it boring so dont think im a hater or calling anyone or promotion boring or sloppy...i just feel like the sport is turning into an entertainment thing over a respected competition.... p.s.s, im wasted and just got laid and get to sleep in my own bed tonight....so this thread is 5 star in my eyes even if theres no replies Im a fighting fan more then anything. MMA is on the same level as kickboxing/muay thai and grappling. Now based on past experience if I had a choice between an Its Showtime or Thai Fight Extreme to a ufc event id take the sooner bc they are consistently more exciting
trinimmaman
UFC is where the bigger names, not neccessarily the better fights are. Someone mentioned earlier that in the smaller promotions is where the more exciting fights are and I agree. I watch as much mma as I can, but agree though that fights have become somewhat stagnant. Whether its fighters playing it safe or the fact that many of the fighters know each other so well that they cancel each other out can be debatable. This brings about the question, would fights where the opponets don't know who they are fighting until the weigh ins or night of the fight be more entertaining? Maybe like a tournament where a number is selected representing a fighter??? Just a suggestion. Thoughts???

I blame all mid card to co main event guys for the bad fights. They are the position that they are close to a title shot but also close to being left where they are if they win or los. So bc of that they fight to ensure victory. Guys just brought fighting on undercards have a point to prove. They need to be exciting or dominant to be kept by the ufc and move to main card. Champs want to dominate to be considered the best but what happens is they in most cases get guys that are fighting not to lose instead of fighting to win. What happens is the champs wait for the opponent to make the first mistake where the opppnent gets gun shy based on who they are fighting

Little_Kang
So Mr. Kang' date=' what would you suggest as a solution to this problem???[/quote'] Lots. Here; - Dont award the fitch's and shield's with title fights, quite the opposite actually. Demote them for boring fights - Award the guys that do go out to fight their asses off with better shots. ie After Hendricks stopped Fitch he should of got gsp or at least condit - instead of having of the night bonuses, put out bonuses for finishes - Yellow card system

So basically would it be based on crowd response or some other factor... I agree with the Shields/Fitch concept, but its still somewhat infair to the fighter to domnate a fight or have an unbeaten streak and not get the title shot. Rakenshi1243
I like the fighters of the UFC, hate the management and how it's handled. I love MMA as a sport, to me it has nothing to do with the brutality of fighting, but the sportsmanship of martial arts. I know a lot of fighters are there to get paid for what they've been doing their entire lives. I dislike knucklehead divas like Rampage or Diaz, they don't see MMA as a sport, just a place to punch other human beings and get paid. This is also why I dislike so many MMA fans too. My point exactly. Will take some serious investment in terms of properly training the refs etc. Don't think there's anyway to help the uneducated fans who would still boo a fight as soon as it goes to the ground. Well it really wouldnt be that hard. All they would need to do set BJMs command seminars as a requirement before you can be a ref or judge. Also give the refs a heads up on who they will be reffing so that they research these guys on their own

Even when a fighter is in a dominat position, once the crowd begins getting agitated, the refs starts threatening stand ups. Anyway I guess with good enough training this shouldn't be a problem. GeorgeStSilva
I'm an MMA fan but I do find some fights boring, mostly because they're boring. I know there is a lot of training and technique involved but when a fighter uses his wrestling to hold his opponent down and do nothing from there it's annoying. Thats why I was a hug GSP fan (hence the name) until I heard his corner yelling for him not to advance position until there was 30 seconds left in the round. Thats some BS
