Dana White: Poor fight cards will doom the UFC

Now before you all crucify me, hear me out. I've been a huge UFC fan for many years. I would consider myself to be a casual fan-which imo makes up atleast 60% of the UFC fan base. A few years ago, I wouldn't miss a single event. I turned many of my friends on to the sport. Recently however, I've become increasingly turned off by the fight cards. There are hardly any intriguing matchups anymore. The best fighters are seemingly coddled and are almost never pitted against each other. These days I might watch at most one or two fights from a card.

1) Anderson Silva: Forced fed mediocre fighters who would not last a round if Anderson decided to fight.

2)GSP: I can appreciate the ground game but when a guy who hugs his opponents to decision victories is the face of your company, you're in serious trouble. He needs to fight Silva.

3) Jones: Loved the guy when he first burst on the scene but he has now become predictable and boring. He's cleaned out the division without so much as a scratch, yet, the quality of his opponents seem to be going down. Move him up a class or have him fight Silva. To me he's way to big and long for the guys he's fighting. Do something! anything!

4) Edgar: watching this guy olympic box point his way to victories was painful. Henderson destroyed him in their first matchup yet he was given and umptenth title match when he clearly is not someone fight fans want to see.

When they do make a good matchup the fill the card with 10 other fights noone wants to see. The cards they put on fox were all doomed for failure.

If the UFC can no longer hold the interest of the casual fan it will be in serious trouble. I think the writing is on the wall. Pretty soon, I won't even check the results anymore and I KNOW a lot of fans like myself are disillusioned as well.

Sorry if I was all over the place but I had to get that out. I used to love the UFC.

I hear what your saying but you should quit worrying about name recognition and just enjoy the fights with no expectations.

That would be a great idea if the shows were free.

Alot of them are and they do try to stack the PPV cards more but injuries and what not happen.

Personally i think they should spread it around a little more because alot of big names seem to come with big reputations and expectations that seem great on paper based on big names but often don't live up to what's expected but the truely hungry fighters and carving a path for themselves usually over perform concerning really exciting fights because they're fighting to move up beyond prelim status and they pretty much always bring it.

I also think fans have grown overly critical and are not as easily entertained.

I'm frustrated as well. Some of the undercard fights are very good...but I don't know any of the fighters. Which for me is important if I'm forking-out 50 bucks for an event. Part of the problem might be because I have lost interest in watching TUF (season 12 was the last for me), which is a resource of their newer fighters.

In the words of Dana White:

1. UFC Fans are spoiled

2. If you dont like the fuc$ing card dont buy it

My words: To the people complaing about the price of the PPV. Invite some friends over and split the cost and then you have yourself a cheap saturday night. I personally thought the overall card last night was awesome. Cub Swanson gave me my moneys worth in the first 5 minutes of the card.

If you look at the UFC's PPV numbers and gate polls...the numbers are only getting larger, I'm not sure the billion dollar company you speak of is in sort of trouble or doom like you say.

No, false.

UFC 152 in Toronto did a gate of $1.9m with 16,800 attendees. UFC 140 in Toronto last December did a gate of $3.9m with 18,303 attendees.

This has been a trend all year, in addition to falling PPV buys. I cant remember the exact number, but it recently reported that last year the average PPV buys of the cards was 480k, whereas this year it has fallen to 396k (not including the yet to be announced 152 figures).

So PPV's buys are down by circa 20%

Yepper. It seems to me that the lower the expectations or the lower the ranked the fighters are the more action and competition your gonna see in the fight.

I rarely watch MMA events outside of the UFC but last night I sat down and watched the BAMMA 10 highlights on UK television, broadcast for free. BAMMA 10 had some really exciting fights with guys that were just going at it in an attempt to stop the fight anyway they could. Really some great toe to toe, tooth and nail matches. Less technical but far more exciting fights, i would rather have paid money to see BAMMA 10 then UFC 152.

Off the top of my head I can't really see an easy solution to the problem here.

Well, in fairness my opinion is based only on a 55 minute highlight show of BAMMA 10 vs the entire UFC 152 event but.....

If Winner has lost something then judging by what I saw it sure has hell isn't his heart.

Also I saw an awesome come from behind submission which imo is exactly what bjj is all about, I was particulary impressed.

On the downside the commentators seem to be watching on severely lagged internet and wtf was that ref doing......some poor fool had to tap about 20 times ( to strikes but the commentators had him tapping to a sub lol ) before the ref realised he was tapping and not actually striking.
