Should Scotland Have its Independence?

Recommended Posts

Do you think they should have independence? Every Scottish person I've asked about it says they don't want it and they would crumble as a nation if they were to leave the UK.

As a nation, Scotland currently faces 8.2% unemployment, higher than the 7.9% UK average.

More than a quarter of the adult population is obese (27%). UK average is 22%.

If they went independent, they would have a debt of 140 billion pounds, approx. $226,170,000,000. The UK total is ?1.066 trillion. The population is around 5.2 million, leaving each Scot with ?20,500 debt each. Current UK population of 62 million, average debt of ?16,742 per person.

I don't understand why they want their independence, but as an Englishman, now may be the time to let them have it, thoughts? Poll coming

Can also source stats on drug/alcohol/education if people want them

Only if they elect Mel Gibson as President/Prime Minister/whatever you Brits call them. And, he has to come to work everyday in full blown William Wallace attire, complete with facepaint and accent.

Why do they want it? I like to think all nations prefer to control their own destiny which is fair enough.

If they vote and the majority want it I say let them have it.

Well, if they go independent and the debts do spiral out of control who is going to pick up the tab? thats right, the rest of us Brits.

The only reason they want it is because they dont want to be a part of a union with the English, simple as that. If they want it I say let them, but when the **** hits the fan, tough ****.

We have the same type of movement here in Quebec. It's the politicians that want to separate but I've never met a single person on the street (other than a couple of drunks), that want it. In both cases though, if it's something that the masses truly want then go for it. It's just problems down the road though IMO. Pretty much what fobar said.

Though I see how any good can come of it, If they vote for it then why not? The only stipulations I would put in place is that it be made compulsory to all people over the age of 18 in Scotland(though the whole UK would be preferable) to vote. That way there isn't an undecided middle to ***** about which side the vote falls.

I honestly don't know much about the Scottish economy. What exactly does it export to bring in money? How does it plan on sustaining itself, and what kind of manufacturing jobs does it have?

Lmao. The only thing the Scots export are the Scots themselves.

They emigrate the world over, then immediately get drunk and and sing songs 'aboot gain hame' lol

They should owe 0 debt. It should be pardoned for having their lands taken away. Us Americans have seen Braveheart and we all saw what happened at the end!

Freeeeedom!

lol..... :)

I don't know enough about the demographics of Scotland and UK politics to say much on the matter, but poverty and obesity go hand-in-hand in "developed" countries. This is why the fattest states in America are also the poorest states. :-\
