Dominick Cruz out for another 12 months after second surgery

UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz could miss another 12 months after a second major knee operation last week, according to UFC officials Monday.

The 27-year-old Cruz (19-1) would end up missing more than two years of the prime of his career. The second operation was due to his body rejecting the original cadaver anterior cruciate ligament placed in his left knee in an early June reconstructive surgery. MMA Junkie broke the news about Cruz's second operation earlier Monday.

Cruz last defended his title with a decision win over current flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson on Oct., 1, 2011, in Washington D.C. His next title defense, scheduled against arch-rival Urijah Faber, was delayed until July to help build up the fight with the two working as coaches on season 15 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Cruz suffered the original injury in May while training for the Faber fight. His injury and recovery time caused UFC to pit Faber against Renan Barao to create an interim championship on July 21 which Barao won via decision. It had been talked about that Barao would wait for Cruz to return, as opposed to defending his title, but that was when it was thought Cruz would be ready to return in the spring.

This injury would make it almost a sure thing UFC would be looking at having Barao (29-1, 1 no contest) defend his interim belt as soon as possible. Michael McDonald (15-1), who is recovering from a hand injury, would be the most likely opponent since McDonald was the first person asked to face Faber for the interim title before injuring his hand in training the day he had agreed to take the fight.

Cruz is expected to stay visible during his absence from the cage, working as an analyst before and after shows.

With the timing of his return looking like the end of 2013 at the earliest, there would probably be one more interim bantamweight title defense next year. This adds significance to two fights in the upcoming weeks - Saturday's Mike Easton (13-1) vs. Raphael Assuncao (18-4) match in Seattle that will air on the FX prelims and a Dec. 29 fight with Brad Pickett (22-6) vs. Eddie Wineland (19-8-1). Most likely, the second contender during the year would be the winner of one of those two fights.

I really hope not but this sounds like the end of Cruz's career. 27....going to be out for 2 years on double knee surgery and then what? Is he really going to be ready to jump right into defend his belt or fighting for the belt after that if he has to relinquish?

Sad, a young Champion, one of the most talented fighters in the UFC top 6 pound for pound with a 19-1 record and wins over so many top fighters. I'll be really surprised if he bounces back from this...but then again it is Cruz, the king of bouncing.

Sad to hear this.

Hope cruz can make a comeback to the level he was before the injury.

Tbh tho if he gonna be out for another year, then they should strip him of the title.

Strip him of his title. Barao should be the new BW champ as of now and his first title defense should be against McDonald.

Create an interim champion. Then the interim champ can sit around for a year waiting for Cruz.

Barao is the interim champ. And he already said he is going to wait until Cruz comes back

Thats ridiculous. He should be stripped and given a title shot on return. It is so damn unfair to guys like Barao and MacDonald. Sure Barao has the interim belt, but for real, that means ****ing nothing

He shouldn't get stripped of the title. Now is a perfect time for an interim champion to step in and do his job. Imagine if Barao could get a couple of defences before Cruz comes back, all of a sudden the fight would have a ton more interest because it's not just glorified #1 contender vs Champ like Condit/GSP was.

This. If he really is out for another year, Barao should be upgraded to undisputed champ and defend it. Give Cruz a crack when he returns.

I think that was the last we saw of him in the UFC.

Goodbye Dominick!

I agree with this ... something just doesn't seem like he's going to return or return in top form

They definitely need to strip him of the title. How long did they wait to strip Mir of the HW title after he was injured in a motorcycle accident? Wiki check - he was stripped of the title after 14 months when they learned he wouldn't be able to return as scheduled. I don't see why the same shouldn't be done in Cruz's situation.

It certainly sucks for Cruz though. Knee injuries can be tricky, and some guys are never the same even after "successful" surgery. Most sources say his ACL was torn (the most common), but there's also the MCL, PCL, and meniscus that regularly get damaged. Since the cadaver graft didn't work, that means they had to dig back into a knee that was already swollen and traumatized from a recent surgery. The dude has had it rough, especially having had two hand surgeries as well. Even though I wanted to see him get beat, I have to admit that he's incredibly good and has managed to outclass just about everyone at 135, not to mention being without a loss since his first Faber fight (at 145).

This 100%. It will give real meaning to the "interim" title, instead of disrespecting it like Condit. Cruz wants to fight, and still has a chance to return, so he stays champ. Barao can start defending the empty throne until the real king returns, and that ladies and gentlemen will be an exciting and extremely easy to hype fight.
