What stereotype of your nationality/ethnicity irks you somewhat?

There is a stereotype for pretty much every notionality from Canadian always being naive and too polite, English having bad teeth, American being brash and a bit thick, Australians being sport crazy because their country has no culture?

Does any of this bother you or make you sigh when you hear it for the umpteenth time?

Being Welsh I hear the sheep shagger joke a hell of a lot but that doesn't bother me in the slightest, I hate the stereotype that all Welsh love to sing and we all love Tom Jones and rugby, totally false.

It annoys me when people say we have bad teeth and bad food.

The teeth thing isn't exactly untrue' date=' but the food part certainly is. It's highly likely that people who say English food is bad, are the people who ate some sort of ethnic food in England, and it gave them the squirts.[/quote']

With all due respect, I have grown to be quite fond of England in the year and a half I've lived here - however, the food here is quite subpar. Not even in comparison to America, but to other places I've spent time over my life; Brazil, Japan, all throughout Europe...

Great.

Do you have anything to compare to?

Are their Chinese buffets in every city like their are here?

There's a lot of foreign restaurants and takeaways. Chinese and Italian food is superior. I have no problem admitting that.

Yeah, but I don't think they would compare. Everything is different, even the chain companies that you recognise like McDonald's, BK, KFC, Subway etc.

A lot of the chinese buffets in Newcastle are just family owned businesses

Yeah I guess I meant have you or T2S eaten outside of the UK or even Europe for that matter. If the foreign restaurants are family owned there than yeah their probably authentic and good.

In the states' date=' we have similar places but we have a lot of foreign foods prepared by Americans too and it's **** in comparison.

American food in general is pretty weak compared to say Chinese or Mexican. Burgers, ribs, steak.[/quote']

I've been to Germany, Spain, France, Switzerland, America so I've had food from all over the place. When I was in America I made sure to eat at small diners, and try to avoid big chains, but went to Sizzler and Ponderosa a couple of times for the buffet, both were good, but not special.

The chinese buffets are good, and they're all based on the same couple of streets, so they compete with each other all year round.

When I went to visit family down in Brighton, right at the bottom of the country, I ordered a chinese once, and the guy who picked up the phone had a London accent, which I was surprised at, that was the day I learned only to order chinese food from chinese people

God i'm so sheltered. I've never even been the places in America you talked about lol

How does english food stack up to American since I've never been?

Really what is American and or UK food? Hell the national dish of the UK is freakin' tiki masala.. And American food is so regional, it can vary so much. I have traveled all over the world and enjoy food everywhere I go.

Tika Masala was created by Indian chefs to suit western pallet. Whether you class it as Indian or not' date=' it's a poor example of traditional English food.[/quote']

yes I know, as I lived in Scotland. But why is the national dish a tiki masala and not something like spotted **** or bangers and mash or fish and chips? Anything?

English food = Blaah

American Food = From VERY VERY good to Blaah depending on region.

Greek food > All

This is all 100% opinion from a Southerner who was spoiled with excellent Southern cooking my entire life.

I do have a preference for Greek food no doubt, and the food in Saudi Arabia was quite good as well. Even the "American" fast food places in Saudi are far superior to what we have in the US.

I'm not aware of anything being the "national dish". If it has been classed as such, it'll be due to our left wing pressure group's obsession with multiculturalism, and demonising anything that is traditionally European, and placing anything "wonderful and ethnic" on a pedestal.

Hey, we have that problem here in America too. Oddly, the greatest attacks are against Southerners who are still viewed as racist hillbilly buffoons. I mean reality be damned, we gotta label everyone right? Well, the only people in America not allowed to label anyone is indeed Southerners. If a Southerner labels anyone it's racist. If anyone labels a Southerner, it must be true, so that makes it ok despite it being a gross over exaggeration.

It isnt the UK's national dish at all/ was voted most popular dish, but the sunday roast, fish and chips, toad in the hole, shepherds pie, bangers and mash etc are our national dishes.

what did you have and what didn't you like about it?

I was over there 10 years ago in London, I don't even remember what it was called, but everything was a little bland for my tastes, and well, honestly I take that with a grain of salt (lol, no pun intended) because I do know London being a more touristy area, I'm not likely to get what I could get if I went to the less touristy areas and ate at what we in America like to call "greasy spoon" restaurants which are typically MUCH better than most chain type places. So my assessment is probably pretty unfair and that's why I stated it's my "opinion". But that experience is all I have to draw from.

And holy cow you guys tea is awful! But that's a matter of Southern Sweet Tea tastes lol.

While I do love the South, there are a lot of racist people here, probably more so than in any other part of the US (guessing).

I won't say everyone is racist though. I have met MANY great southern folks. The South has far more generous people willing to open doors for random strangers compared to any other part of the US. Gotta love southern hospitality and their generosity.
