Fighters on your Radar

Recommended Posts

What fighters are on your radars? I.e. fighters that show a lot of potential, but either haven't had enough fights or haven't been properly tested to see just how good they really are. Here are some of mine:

Rustam Khabilov

Max Holloway

Stephen Thompson

Jimi Manuwa

Ryan Jimmo

Any others you guys can add?

Erik Silva: He did get tested against Fitch and I thought he did really well. He needs to fight more for us to see how far he can really go.

Tim Boetsch: He is either really lucky or has something getting him by. Even though he was losing the Okami fight and got the nod against Hector I think he needs more top level guys to see if he was just lucky.

Jimmo,he is not only talented,he imo has the MOST skills of the entire division.

His problem is that he has spent too much time facing lesser opponents, that has not honed him for the elite fights.

I see several holes in his game, especially when pressured,he moves back instead of side stepping and countering.

What i like though is he has bjj,he is very fast, good striking, all around game. The problem is most of that is nullified because he has a smallish stance, short reach. That auto means he has a tougher time to dictate the fight,so others have a one up on him.

I really like Carmont's upside but he again has a few holes and imo lacks cardio bad.He is trying to maintain too much muscle with far less cardio, geesh even GSP couldn't carry that muscle mass and his cardio is top 3 in MMA.

The obvious one, however i still see little reference to a title shot or even being the top contender>>>ALAN BELCHER .

I have mentioned him since geesh way back before Akiyama, btw Belcher won that fight, but my decision does not matter. My ONLY concern is Alan's confidence,i really don't know if inside his head he feels he is the best in the division,i do but again my thoughts don't matter.

Honorable mentions...

I still like Paul Sass even though beat at his own game,it was a learning experience. He still has tons of upside.

The guiy who beat him ,impressed me a lot,Matt Wiman, sure he has some losses, but he is still an impressive fighter when on his game.Perhaps a better camp, training partners might help him.

ALWAYS love the way Hominick brings it ,each and EVERY fight. He has the ability,if he just learned a little more ground game and didn't open up offensively so much early on.He needs to spend a little more time warming up and not be afraid to change his game up a bit here and there. He can't treat every single fight liek a boxing or kickboxing match, this is MMA.If he gets his mind right he most definitely could be a champion.

So, I'm going all Swedish fighters here...

Magnus Cedenblad (needs better cardio, then he'll be a monster)

Reza "Mad Dog" Madadi (a bit more selfcontrol, then he might be an animal...)

Mats Jansson (Will be presented to the UFC before 2014 is over, mark my words)

and last, but far from the least...

Max Nunes (Needs some quality opponents, but I really think this kid will be the next swedish mma-star after The Mauler)

Then of course you have Akira Corrasani, but I think he is more talk than walk. Hope I'm wrong though as I really like him...

Sweden has got some quality fighters, as does Finland, Norway, Iceland and Denmark (Of course Sweden is the big brother as always, but there are loads of talents in all of scandinavia, Finland and Iceland)

I think we will have a nordic beltholder pretty soon (hoping for Mauler, but there are others down the line here...)

Oh, and by nordic I mean someone from either Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Denmark or Norway (In the ranking order I think has the best chances at the moment)

Good call on the Swedish fighters. I have been into Scandanavian fighters myself lately being part Norwegian. They are making a rise. My favorites are Gustafsson, Simeon Thoresen, Chris Spang, Reza, Gunnar, and Magnus Cedenblad.

Never heard of Jansson or Nunes before...I'll have to check them out.

Check out Chris Spang. He fought in StrikeForce and has some prime boxing and good kicks and knees also. Hopefully the UFC will pick him up
