Undefeated one-handed fighter Nick Newell pleads with Dana White for shot at UFC

I understand were Dana coming from, but Newell has over 300 wins in wrestling against two handed wrestlers, is undefeated as a professional MMA fighter, and has defeated most of them via some kind of stoppage why not just give him a chance?

If anything give him a spot on an upcoming season of TUF.

i like the kid and he comes out to fight and does well. i can see why dana doesnt sign him because not only is it a bit of a liability, but if he gets beat up people will be all shame on you dana for letting him in with that handicap. anyways id sign the kid or at least let him on tuf but im sure dana just sees it as a freak show.

Been watching this guy for a while now and I think he's finally ready to test the waters of the UFC. He's shown he can win by KO, sub, and has the cardio to grind out a tough decision win.

His particular RNC is nearly impossible to defend because the hand that a fighter would normally peel off with 2 on 1 is simply not there, so they wind up scratching and clawing at the stump, only to eventually tap or be put to sleep. Its funny that what seems to be an obvious disadvantage, actually turns out to be quite an advantage in certain situations.

Looking at this season of TUF, Dana is no stranger to publicity stunts, so if not for this guys raw talent, at least Dana could bring him in for the WOW factor. Im sure a lot of people would tune into a free FOX card to see what a one armed fighter brings to the table.

SIGN HIM ALREADY!

Im not saying give him top talent right off the rip. Im fully confident he could beat the lower half of the LW roster and then you build the guy up from there.

Nick is legit. The people saying it would be bad for business have probably never seen him fight. Hes tough as nails.

Its an inspirational storyline. Something the UFC should want to be a part of.

Can you imagine the reaction if someone beat the snot out of him for 15 minutes? It would destroy the UFC

they should bring Cody McKenzie back up to LW and keep him just for that fight so Newell can get at least one win, I wouldn't mind seeing Cody drop to his knees from a body shot again, that **** was hilarious

I'm saying he isn't a good fighter, but it kind of has a "freakshow" element to it, I can't ever see them putting him on Fox.

Yes Matt Hammil has fought in the UFC and had some success, but he doesn't have a visible deformity, whether or not it should make a difference I don't know, but I'm sure you can see what I mean.

Imagine though, if McKenzie got that choke on him? If he choked out someone with a disability on PPV? Maybe even on FOX? Bad for business

But that fight would never be a Main Card fight anyway

You guys are caught up in the image thing way too much. Yes if they threw him a Jim Miller or Gray or even Lauzon off the bat and he got tooled it would look bad, but they wouldnt do that. Nick Newell is for real, a true well rounded fighter that does all the right things and trains his azz off. I have no doubt that he would dismantle the lower tier fighters in the division. Then when people are used to him a bit more, the UFC gives him a harder test.

You guys seriously aren't giving his fighting ability enough credit simply because of the "freakshow" aspect. Im telling you this dude gives a new meaning to the phrase " A one armed man in an azz kicking contest".

I wouldn't have a problem with him being in the UFC, he's better than a lot of the cans we've seen before, but it just won't happen, because of the image thing, people are too caught up in it, as you said, and that probably won't change for a long time. I mean how do you promote him as a fighter, do you make a point of pointing out that he has one arm? Or do you ignore it and pretend that people won't notice?

It should be a point of emphasis, just like Rousey having a vagina seems to be on these forums(jk).

Seriously though he is a COMPLETELY UNIQUE fighter and coupled with his skill, that is a very marketable thing. Doest America always love an underdog?

When he won the title there was a kid, Newells self proclaimed biggest fan, with the same condition that got to come in the ring and hold the belt. The kid was beaming from ear to ear. Im no overly sentimental guy, but it was legitimately heartwarming to see something like that.

We have enough bad azz Diaz types in the big leagues. Newell is great for the sport because of his never say die-overcome all odds personality.

He's talented as hell. The handicap doesn't turn me on like it does equality ****s, and i'd like to see him be rewarded for his merits as a fighter.

Of course it is a "damned if you do/don't" situation as people have said. If he doesn't get a shot at the big time it will be because of prejudice. If he does and gets a beating, the same ****s crying prejudice will be outraged.

He needs to fight & beat a name... Then he will have more of a case....

Also he's not a "1 armed fighter", he's a 1 handed fighter. He has an arm and strikes with it well.

The devil is in the details I guess. But yes you are right and he does strike with it quite well. Its actually ideal for tight GnP situations or clinch fighting. Its better than an elbow because he can throw sort of a "straight punch" with the end of it, as opposed to an elbow that needs to come across.

Who is really in the XFC that has a name? He's not going to join another lower tier organization just to find a name to beat. He destroyed the LW XFC champ, Ryan "its a wrap" Reynolds, in the 1st round and as ive recently learned Reynolds had a good fight with Eddie Alverez. So I guess thats kind of a name.

If anyone has never seen this guy fight, he has killer instinct in spades and has said many times he constantly looks for the finish. The UFC needs more guys like Nick Newell

Good points made.

He's better than a lot of the guys in the U.F.C. I'll give you that. I just mean he needs to beat a name to force a move, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve one now.

Gotcha. Like an undeniable feather in the cap. Unfortunately XFC doesnt seem to have any such feathers.

If you just look at his past 5 or 6 fights there are some impressive finishes including a clinch knee KO, a slick leg lock, a hard fought grueling decision, and a 1st round RNC of the champ. Add to that his attitude and determination, I think if he was a "normal" fighter then calling him up would be second nature. However, because theres the whole disability aspect, there is hesitation on how the public perception will go.

If Dana passes on this guy I will never forgive him.

Edit- quote seems to have gone astray

Let him go to Bellator first. The kid has talent but hasn't really fought anyone that is good. Not being able to control someone's wrists on the ground is going to hamper him badly if he gets into the octagon with a guy that has better wrestling or a better ground game. He would be screwed if someone got his back too imo.

Im pretty sure someone got his back in the decision fight he had and he fought out of it. As I expressed before, he has unique advantages on top with the short straights he can deliver with the half arm, as well as disadvantages.

Theres tons of people on the UFC roster that havent beat any big names, thats why they're lower tier fighters. Throw Newell in with the scrubs and see if he emerges to warrant better competition.

Theres really no good reason NOT to give the guy a shot, a chance, an opportunity to prove himself.

Give him a shot, sure the anti MMA people will make a big deal about it, but they were never going to get into it anyhow. If he has the skills to make it let him fight if not at least he was given a chance and he can go back to a lower tier organization. Treat him like any other person.

Exactly. Judging from that article, thats all he wants.

Putting a glove over the stub would be sadly hilarious, but its been deemed an extension of the elbow more than a shorter fist so its legal for him to strike with the end of it. The thing can do some damage too.

These are lower tier orgs...

Although he might actually be good I wouldn't be suprised if there was money under the table being passed around for him to look better than he truly is, he might be one of the most talked about fighters outside of the UFC/Bellator dome right now.

I still see nothing wrong with him trying out for TUF if he can make it inside the house then he deserves his shot just like everyone else IMHO.

You've got to be kidding me. You've clearly never actually seen him fight. He goes out to take people's souls. Kind of insulting to suggest that but its comments like this one that is going to make it all that much sweeter when he finally gets to showcase his talents.

I've seen him fight and I even made a thread about him on this forum, look it up.

All I'm saying is, if EliteXC (a much bigger organization with much bigger names involved), was offering fighters some extra money to fight in a certain way, these low tier organizations could also do the same.

Like I said, give him a shot at TUF, then we'll know.

Haha ok boss. Newells one of, if not my fav fighters so I kinda fly off the handle sometimes about him.

I agree about TUF. It would be a great introduction to his story for the masses, and Im confident he would emerge victorious.

MAKE IT HAPPEN UNCLE DANA
