Now a free agent, Johny Hendricks says UFC wants him back at welterweight

There was a time not all that long ago that Johny Hendricks was considered the best welterweight on the planet. Unfortunately, his career has taken a rather grim turn, and he’s now a tough 3-7 in his last 10 bouts. Not even a move to the middleweight division, where the weight cut is less taxing, could bring him renewed success.

“I’m a free agent,” Hendricks said on MMAJunkie Radio (transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMAFighting). “I am up for grabs. The UFC stills wants me. They want me back at 170 [pounds] and I agree. If you’re gonna keep giving me these big ol’ 85 pounders, I’ve got to get back down to 170.”

While Hendricks says the UFC is interested in re-signing him as a welterweight, he expects a tough road back to title contention.

“I’ve got to fight back to what I want to get to,” said Hendricks. “I’m not that type of guy that says, ‘No, I think I deserve more.’ I will get back to where I want to be at the welterweight division. I really do believe that. I’m starting to get faster. I’m working with a trainer here, Ryan. He’s been working on my fast-twitch movement, he’s been working on my speed – quickness, explosion – and whenever I’m doing these things and then I go back and train boxing or whatever, everyone can see that I’m getting quicker and my weight is coming down.”

Whatever the case, Johny Hendricks says his last two bouts against hulking middleweights Tim Boetsch and Paulo Costa helped rejuvenate his confidence — confidence he’s hoping to carry back down to the UFC welterweight division.

“Right after my last fight I emailed [the UFC] saying, ‘Hey, I want to go back to 170. Obviously, y’all don’t want me at 185. I understand,’” said Hendricks. “And realistically, the only reason I went up to 185 was because I thought I had one more fight on my contract. So I go, screw 170, I’m gonna go to 85 and then we can renegotiate a contract…”

“Needless to say, I got two big ol’ boys [at middleweight] and it didn’t go the way I wanted it to. But after fighting those fights, it really brought back something in me because I was like, ‘Dude, they don’t kick that hard.’ I still hurt all those 85-pounders with my punches and with my kicks. So if I can hurt 85-pounders, what can I do if I go back to 170. It sort of built my confidence back up to where I believe in my power, I believe in what I can do.”

Do you think Johny can make a comeback at 170?

I've still got a kind of soft spot for Hendricks because of what he did to Fitch and GSP, but he's still massively deluded and his inability to recognise his failings makes me think there's no way back for him.

He went up to 185 because he was on a 3 fight losing streak at WW and had missed weight the last twice. He's subsequently gone 1-2 at MW and managed even to miss weight there.  He needs to stop being unrealistic and admit he's been an undisciplined fatty for a couple of years.  Working on `fast twitch' is not the answer; eating in a more disciplined way is.

He's deluded and stupid.  When he was the welterweight champion he would openly talk about how he would walk around outside of training camp at 215.  Campaigned for a middleweight title fight against Chris Weidman before he even defended his welterweight title... lmao Weidman would have killed him.

Uh, no. They wanted you at MW because you're a weight cutting can. I'm sure you think they want you at WW. Cutting 35lbs to be the bigger guy is better for you.

^ Hendricks saying he was done with WW.

Oh, no, not guys in the same division as you. Cries about guys being to big at 185.

^ Hendricks again saying he is done with WW and that he weighs 205! A guy that weighs 205 is scared of guys that weigh 185? He's the same size as the guys at MW. He's got excuses for days like usual. Lol, "If you make me fight guys my size, I'm going to run away." What a ****ing clown.

Didn't this moron just miss weight at 185

why would they ship him back down that makes absolutely 0 sense

this could truly be just a matter of proper discipline, but you cannot just enforce a weight class on a fighter if he no longer has the heart needed in order to make the weight cut

He could consider working out like a professional athlete and not being a fat c*nt.  He's 5'9" with a 69" reach.  That's featherweight stats not middleweight.

Johny sadly needs brain surgery more than fast twitch muscles.

His lack of understanding the real reason for his failures is heart breaking. I think most UFC fighters are too dangerous for him these days.

Both 170 or 185 fighters surpassed him and he does not want to acknowledge  it.

I don't think UFC wants him anymore . they know he can't make 170 anymore

The last time he made Welterweight was the start of 2016 and Wonderboy beat the piss out of him.

You could tell this was always a brutal weight cut but Johny's lack of discipline made it a big problem you could see in that Thompson fight he was drawn out and just didn't look healthy.

Realisticallaly, the only reason he went up to 185 is because every time he showed up at the weigh ins to fight at 170lbs after USADA came in, he would step on the scale and it would say "One at a time please." and they were gonna fire him unless he moved up.

Now he's even been 3 pounds over 185 as well and still got his **** knocked out by tim boesch. I guess its really affecting his weight cut and performance when hendroids can no longer roid to the high heavens.

its not a coincidence that he cant make weight and just about everybody is knocking his **** out after USADA came in. And its no surprise why he started running his mouth about steroids during the build up to the GSP fight, but when GSP offered to pay for olympic style testing for both of them the whole way through, its no surprise that Johny Roids d*ck tucked,  yet GSP still went through with it anyways just to humiliate this clown some more.

its funny what happens to fighters who fall victim to the GSP curse. He'll never be the same after GSP diggled him and USADA stepped in.

Struggles to make weight constantly so the UFC wants him to move up,now they want him back down..geesh.

Hendricks was walking around 210+ and fighting at 170 lmao, sad really he was NEVER a 170 fighter.

He is easily a 185 lb fighter, just because he faced some roider from Brasil doesn't change anything.

I cant wait till he goes back to WW.

He will lose 20% of his purse every fight cause that fat ****er will never make weight.
Then we get to see him continue to lose and make excuses over and over.
3-7 in his last 10, he should be lucky to fight in bum fights with a record like that.

I would appreciate a little more honesty w/ these comeback fighters, they simply spent they're life in the gym,

won a few fights maybe, invested poorly and don;t have enuff money to support themselves and their families

for a sustained period of time ..... so they open a gym or bar .  Hendricks has no money .

How many ufc fighters have earned enough money to live out a comfotable life, a very small percentage I would wager -

Hendricks 15 minutes is up bejesus -

Same here man I don't know if he's broke but he definitely must have lost a lot of money in that restaurant venture. There's nothing wrong with saying "hey man I need to get my **** together and get back to 170 because I need to make money and who knows how many of these ive got left" I think a lot of people would have more respect for the honesty in something like that.

.... we've all done it, u somehow receive a windfall & start living beyond your means but without the limelight factor .

I remember Pat Barry going into the Hardonk fight while being evicted from his apartment .

.... fighters don't see themselves realistically, they think there's another win/ belt over the horizon no matter what

the circumstances, I heard Hendricks restaurant folded .

.... Brazilian superstars money lasts longer even if they live in the USA, Vitor, Anderson, etc, maybe they're more frugal ?
