TUF's Euro Tour

POTUF

Signed up to "Scott's Cheap Flights" last year and after months of wolf tickets, I found a good deal on a trip to Amsterdam. The deals usually expire fast so I booked it without really doing any research but hoping to take train from Amsterdam to Bruges, skip over to London, and down to Paris, but welcoming all advice to an uncultured Yank. Dates are 10/20-10/27.

London smells like piss many places.

But the scones at the Savoy are p5p.

I live in Iowa. They merely adopted the piss. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't smell clean air until I was already a man.

London is excellent, even if I am disappointed and also suspicicous that you've timed this just when i leave the UK.

Paris is also great; very long queues though, so pick your attractions carefully.

I would also say that Gent > Bruges; basically the same thing, but less touristy.

Liechtenstein is also a really unique place and not too far from Amsterdam.  It's a country that's smaller than most American cities, which is kind of cool.

If you want some pleasant scenery, there's some very nice green and pleasant land outside of London, or for rugged beauty there's Scotland (but given you've got Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon maybe you've had your fill of such delights)

And finally, no trip to Western Europe is complete without a trip to the culture capital of Europe, Hull.  NoCake or Denizen should be able to give you the hot-spots.

This is very disheartening and unfortunate to the budget as i was just about to inform you on your responsibilities as my free stay and board. No worries mate. Already scouting some cheap AirBnBs. Where are you off to now? Also thank you and thank you in advance to all suggestions.

That is a LOT to see in 7 days man. Night 1 you'd be staying in Amsterdam I imagine, If it's late when you arrive you'd be staying the next night too. That's 2 nights of 7 gone already with 1 to 1 1/2 days of seeing Amsterdam. Now remember you need a minimum one night stay in Amsterdam the night before your flight back. So that's a 3rd night leaving you with 4 nights to stay in London, Paris and Bruges. You can't do it. I'd drop London simply because it's most out of the way. Then with the 4 nights you have left you can spend 1 in Bruges and 3 in Paris which is MINIMUM stay for Paris. I have loads of experience planning trips and traveling in Europe so feel free to send a message if you want any info.

Thank you. Yea it's still very fresh/early but we arrive to Amsterdam at 9 AM Sunday. Depending on how the sleep goes on the flight, I plan on spending only that day touring Amsterdam, waking up Monday morning and beating it over to Bruges which looks to be about a half point to London (3.5 hours drive/train ride to Bruge, 3.5 hours drive to London) Spend a day in Bruges, leave for London Tuesday morning and spend Tuesday/Wednesday there before driving 6ish hours down to Paris Thursday/Friday and driving back to Amsterdam (4.5 hour drive) Spend whatever time is remaining to locate the oil for America and giving you guys some "freedom"

I know it sounds a bit unreasonable but "3 days in Paris" sounds a bit redundant. Plans will definitely be subject to change but would like to see as much of Europe as possible rather than see as much of one city as possible while i'm in it if that means giving up certain sites if that makes sense.

that's a lot of travelling to pack in in a week though, m8. gonna have little time to enjoy yourself

This....and TUF, you mentioned wanting to see as much as possible. But waiting in train stations, going all over on trains takes away a lot of actual visiting. Plus 2 days is not near enough to see London. Especially when cahnces are you will be arriving past mid day, so more like 1 1/2 days. And like I said, 3 days is minimum for Paris, it is a bit city with a LOT to see. And look into the trains. Just because Bruges appears to be close to London does not mean it will have direct easy transport to London. I am not saying it doesn't, just that you shouldn't assume. Paris may be further from London but there will be tons of fast direct routes for example.

Thanks. I appreciate these posts ^ Any imparted wisdom is appreciated. No idea about travel fair comparison with trains or car rental over there. Have 4 months to figure it out but all tips/thoughts are welcomed.

Off to Stockholm for 6 months from September. Sadly that might be a bit far to squeeze into your trip.

I'd look into hiring a car from Amsterdam. You might find quite a few of those journeys are quicker, cheaper and easier by car, plus it gives you more freedom. Maybe drive some of it and hop between the major cities by train - Amsterdam to Paris, Paris to London are super fast by train. They also drive on the wrong side of the road like you guys so you'll find it easy enough.

In terms of time... you can't 'do' London or Paris in a couple of days, but you can get a pretty good flavour and see the highlights in a couple of days. I've only ever had weekends in Paris and day trips to London and you can still get a good feel for them, especially if you walk around a bit. Is the whole family coming?

Ah cool. That makes it a bit more feasible to cram stuff in.

My job is in Stockholm. I work from home most of the time so I'm going to work from HQ to see what it's like over there. May have a -ve impact on coc.

My problem with cars on his trip is he's staying in cities. They are definitely faster but driving in European cities is something you need to get used to hah. Even if you've driven in North American cities it's nothing like it with all the very narrow windy streets. Street lights in weird positions, lots of traffic circles he may not be used to and parking is very expensive normally. Then there's the other side of the road think in England. Plus when in the cities you would not be driving at all so the car is just sitting there eating up parking time. Still it would be cheaper than trains probably, and faster, but on a train you can relax and enjoy the trip/view. Plus in France you could have the experience of talking the TGV fast train. If you decide to do that go to the site for OUIGO. They offer cheap tickets on the TGV. In fact me and Mrs Yerbo have tickets for the end of June from Stasbourg to Paris for 10 euros each! Also, there can be a pretty big surcharge for renting in one place and dropping off in another. Be sure to look into that if you go that route.

Don't get too put off thinking you won't have much time.

I did a 6 day trip with flights really early in the morning 2 days in Barcelona, then 2 in Venice and finally 2 in Berlin and that was perfect for me.

Depends what kind of traveller you are for example The Sagrada Familia is one of the main attractions of Barcelona now I went and once I got in only stayed for about 20-30 minutes and that was enough for me when if you wanted to you could probably spend a few hours in the place just reading all of the history alone.

Mrs. TUF and I have surmised this so far. Just need help filling in the gaps. Are Belgian bars or bars in general there a s**t show during October like they are here.

Not enough Stockholm.

And please don't refer to the London eye as a ferris wheel. If you're in that vicinity I highly recommend the houses of parliament tour.

Also Belgian bars are pleasant. Not as good as Dutch bars though.

Was for Mrs. TUF's sake. Would be like if I told her we're going to Manchester. She would have no idea, but if I told her it's where that jobber Bisping is from, she would know exactly what I'm talking about. Thanks for the pro tips though. Will give the parliament a look. All knawledge welcome.

If you stop in for a toke I recommend Resin, Picasso, Abraxas and Coffee Shop Mediterranean all top notch stuff and less of a tourist trap.

Abraxas is probably the easiest to come buy its about 2 minutes away from the Royal Palace of Amsterdam.

Avoid Bulldog cafe's the staff treat you like chit except maybe the one next to the red light district they were actually pretty. And stay out of Prix D'ami its probably the first one you come across once you leave the station but just keep going the place is either full of troubles with locals (only coffee shop I've ever seen a metal detector) or full of people who want to try there first joint lol.

Oh man, all that travelling and landmark visiting would drive me crazy, but I hope you enjoy Europe if you're into that stuff

2-5 hour train rides in between cities should help rejuvenate. Just trying to get our euros worth. Luckily, most of those "landmarks" are in the same general vicinity so there will still be plenty of down time to look at bewbs and such in Amsterdam.

If you and your Mrs are anything like me two days each will likely be enough. With some places im different I enjoy seeing the highlight must see stuff and a little of the lesser known attractions.

But truly believe you can see most of the big things of any major city in a couple days. The bigger the city you are from yourself the more it helps because you are already somewhat accustom to that hectic civilian foot traffic.

You're one lucky sob for being in Amsterdam on the 21st of October

https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/see-and-do/whats-on/major-events-and-celebrations/amsterdam-dance-event

Last day of the Amsterdam Dance Event. You can experience a typical dutch rave with hotties and people having fun (fooked up) everywhere.

There are parties all over the place from commercial mainstream to dark and underground

You can sleep on the train and thank me later m8

Of you like chinese food there are two GOAT restaurants near the red light district. The street is called: zeedijk

The most famous one is named Nam Kee but they have the name and many posh people go there. The other is called Wing Kee this one is cheaper just as good but more raw (not the food)

Best Chinese food in Amsterdam

You also have a chinese boat near central station that is called sea palace. Excellent dim sum and diner but high prices. It is a really nice place to have dinner with your wife ( location, view, food and in and exterior of this place)

Also i would suggest to go to the coffeeshop the Dampkring. (Near Dam square) In this coffeeshop the ocean movies were partly filmed (pitt, clooney etc) but they have really good quality weed)

Jebus. Is this really the best rate for train travel? Anybody ever take the Eurail or any other comparable train travel? We're only taking 4 total train rides (Amsterdam - Bruges - London - Paris - Amsterdam)

Lol, just wait until you buy a pint of beer in central London.

That doesn't seem crazy to me. I've only ever done London to Paris and that was about $200.
