UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington is as polarizing as UFC fighters get. Whether you love him or hate him, however, you’re likely to tune into his fights, which means his schtick is working.

In the eyes of current Bellator star Chael Sonnen, one of MMA’s most legendary heels, we’re likely to see many fighters attempt to follow in Covington’s footsteps going forward — not just in terms of Covington’s bad guy gimmick, but in terms of his ceaseless self promotion.

“In many ways, he’s going to reinvent the sport,” Sonnen told Luke Thomas on The MMA Hour this week (transcribed by Jesse Holland for MMAMania). “People are going to start copying him. He’s the first guy to come out and go, ‘Look, I’m just looking to entertain you. If the UFC isn’t going to bring me cameras, I’ll hire my own production crew, I’ll pay them, but I’m going to get this content recorded and out to the masses.’”

As Sonnen implies, Colby Covington’s bad guy act has worked very well. That said, the interim welterweight champion recently divulged that he might turn face ahead of his fight with Woodley, just so the fans have somebody to root for.

“No one cares about Woodley,” Covington said on the latest episode of BJPENN.COM Radio. “People say they don’t like his fight style ’cause he is the human form of NyQuil, and that’s why we call him Ty-Quil. And no one wants to watch him fight. He’s not a draw, he’s boring. So don’t worry, I’m gonna relieve him as the most boring fighter of all time, and send him to the retirement home.”

“Absolutely, this is probably gonna be the fight where I come out as the babyface, ’cause just look at Tyron Woodley. He makes a fool of himself anytime he opens his mouth.”

Is there something to what Chael is saying? Do you think we will start seeing more guys going down Colby's route of seriously over playing the heel to make people tune in to watch him lose?

I'm baffled by the Colby phenomenon tbh. He's a mediocre fighter who can't do anything but hold on for dear life, and his "trash talk" is super cringe.

It sounds like you put Chael and Combers greatest hits in a blender and then sprinkled some retard on top of it.

I've been a long time hater of Woodley, but I'm willing to cease hostilities if he leaves Comby unconscious for several minutes.

While I would agree with the bulk of what you said by your own admission it is working at least a bit lol same as on me.

Your tuning in to see him lose and that's what Colby's going for so in a way even if it is just to eventually see him get starched you start to go along with the ride because you want to see him get his comeuppance.

I tune into every UFC event if I'm not busy, and I absolutely will not, under any circumstances, pay money to watch him fight.

So no, it's not working.

From his own mouth Colby is looking to move to WWE, he plans on taking the title then jumping over to WWE, guy is a joke.

I mean, he was doing pro wrestling on television last year, so it's not like his interest in it is a secret.

Colby is clearly being helped by New FC to get where he is now.

2 last fights were tailor made for his style and yet he managed to somehow get out boxed by Maia.

The moment he faces the real names of the WW division he will get embarrassed.

Who are these real names you speak of in the WW division?  Maia has wins over several men in the top 15 and Colby left him choking on his own blood.  RDA destroyed Lawler and Colby destroyed him.  Stephen Thompson absolutely sucks.  Darren Till is a catchweight fighter and not a welterweight.  Colby would still mug and break him.  Neil Magny?  lol... 30% Usman?  He won't fight Masvidal who is the most well rounded fighter in the top 10.

You don't have to like him but he will be welterweight champion at some point.  If he loses to Woodley he's 6 years younger and will be around when Tyron is gone.  If Tyron doesn't knock him out in the first 7 or 8 minutes he's screwed.  He has that McGregor cardio and his last 3 fights are probably the worst title fights in UFC welterweight history.

They're all in Bellator mate.

Rory, Larkin and Lima would round out a top 5 WW with Woodley and Colby.

UFC WW division is as shallow as it's been for a long time.  That's why they're pushing a LHW so hard.

Didn't Lima KO him last time they fought?

He'd definitely be in the top 6 though.

Point is, the WW division is probably stronger at Bellator right now than the UFC.

Oh absolutely mate.

yeah but they're 1-1 now. He could walk into the UFC and beat Woodley on no camp and defend the belt he's that good, especially now he's improved his TDD.. Lima can get too stubborn, he was winning the Rory fight til the fif when he got lnp'd for five.

I dont dare discussing this with a forum member like you who knows a lot m8 but please hear me out:

I agree with you! He beat Maia and RDA because like I said they were great match ups for Colby .. Colby would beat Lawler easily too.

Now, saying that Thompson sucks and Till is a catchweight fighter still does not take away their high chance of beating Colby (mainly because of the size difference too).

Usman sucks but got all the tools to beat Colby and Masdival is a horrible match up for Colby like you said.

I agree with you about Woodley having trouble beating Colby too.
