Corona Virus Thread

This could cause a mess. I don't know their laws or how bad they have been hit but the governor said there's no appeal process so they will open immediately.

"The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Gov. Tony Evers’ coronavirus stay-at-home order Wednesday, ruling that his administration overstepped its authority when it extended it for another month without consulting legislators.

The 4-3 ruling essentially reopens the state, lifting caps on the size of gatherings, allowing people to travel as they please and allowing shuttered businesses to reopen, including bars and restaurants."

I enjoyed this snipit. Figure out and start working together before it gets to this point.

"The Republican legislators had asked the court to let the rule remain in place for six days to give them time to work with Evers' administration on an alternative plan. The court refused to grant the stay, saying the two sides have had weeks to come up with something."

Housing costs are one thing that may even it out. A house in Fargo is close to 30% higher than surrounding areas. I will probably just explore the market this summer. Even though we aren't hit as hard as other areas, there have to be some cheaper houses available.

MN definitely has better state services than ND as well. Outside of Fargo it can take days or weeks for them to plow some roads. If you live outside of the city, you have to own 4WD or know someone that can clear your road after big storms.

I just looked at houses in Fargo on realtor and I wish the housing here was that cheap. You can't find a 3 bedroom 2 bath here for under 200K even in the slums of this city.

I get there needs to be stages but I don't get people that think we need to keep a lot of the economy closed like this is just gonna blow over. Are you retarded. It's unsustainable.

We can't just keep cutting checks & think that all the things that are made are just gonna magically fall out the sky.

The repercussions for keeping things locked down for 8 months to a yr is FAR worse than what Covid-19 can do.

We don't make **** here anymore. Our economy is mostly a services economy at this point and these businesses are going to lose massive amounts of money regardless because people aren't going to be going out and spending like they were before.

These corporations are going to take their bailouts, get rid of all their employees at their first opportunity and distribute their ill gotten gains to their shareholders anyway.

The damage will be even worse if the pandemic gets out of control. Restaurants, movie theatres, live shows, shopping, all of these industries are going to be hurt very badly whether or not they are open. People are acting like by telling people that they can go out again, everyone will just act like everything is fine. Not only are people going to be wary of being in close contact with people, but they're going to be wary about spending money in these uncertain times.

When I was looking at making a bigger move I explored Falls Church, VA (basically DC) since we have an office there. I could buy a house for the cost of an apartment there.

Our housing costs just made a huge jump about a decade ago. My brother had a 1950s house that he bought for $120k. He put shingles on it and painted the interior. He sold it 8 years later for $195k. He said it's maybe worth $135k at the time but it sold within 48 hours.

We were preapproved for a loan of 350K and we originally wanted a 3 bed, 2 bath and couldn't find ****. Everything in that price range would sell within a day or two of the first open house and people were paying way over the asking after getting into bidding wars.

I might move up to the mountains. We found a a town that's only 30-40 minutes from my work that is relatively cheap and has no major highways going through it so the foglets moving up here from Boston won't consider it because the commute would be atrocious.

Those would be some sketchy ****ing drives in a snow storm, though. A guy I work with said that it's a major east-west trucking route for goods going towards Vermont so they keep the roads pretty clear, but I don't know if people from around here after the same standard for clear roads that I do.

Have you seen how stupid people are.

You open the door without restrictions,  and hell even with restrictions,  people will just go back to their idiotic ways.

I am looking forward to go to a restaurant,  be able to fly home and see my wife after so long and maybe hit a movie. But I'll be damned if I'm standing around a group of morons who needed a pandemic to learn to wash their hands. I'll be the cautious idiot, but I fear I will be a minority out in public.

You're planning on going to restaurants and being locked on a plane, and somehow you believe you're safer than other people doing the exact same thing?

Everybody needs to realize what happens to the cold/flu during the summer time, and take their asses outside. All of the overreaction is a little much.

The irony here is that if the right wasn't obsessed with Greta I would never hear about her at all.

The only time I ever hear about anything she says or does it is on this forum.

What part about me not standing around morons who dont wash their hands missed you?

I'll go to a restaurant,  but wont be sitting on someone's lap because they packed the place.

I'll go on a flight, but am pretty sure the airport being 90% fewer travelers will have enough room to not need to sit me beside some idiotic moron who thinks they can return back to life like it was in december all of the sudden.

How do we justify this?

Some flights were at 85% capacity in March/April. I think it will rebound fairly quickly once places relax.

I like most people just don't watch CNN. I don't care if they want to follow a teenager as long as I don't have to watch it.

I don't watch cable news, if you hadn't told me I wouldn't know.

That said, CNN and FOX both have a long history of putting unqualified idiots onto panels and then labeling it as "opinion".

Don't watch it and it won't affect your life.

I am as baffled by how rustled people get by Greta's fame as I am by her fame itself.  That's not a dig at Roids; i just see people on all social media getting worked up about it.  She's just the latest in a long line of people who are basically famous for being famous. Certainly no more odious than instagram "influencers".

Anyway, back to Corona, i'm sure you've probably had enough statistical analysis to last a lifetime, but if you're still after more, this is kinda neat.  Purely shows rolling 7 day average of number of deaths.  You can add or take away any countries you like; one of the fun facts I found is that Sweden is now the number 1 country for deaths/million people on the 7 day average.  Just overtook UK and Belgium this week.

To major centers. For me to get home there are very few people using the airports (Currently). So with a slower start and see where things go, it wont be bad.

Other airports, I am sure will be much different and much more full

If you cannot figure out that you can do things, while taking precautions and not grouping up with mouth breathers who need a pandemic to tell them to wash their hands, then you just keep riding that short bus to your favorite gathering.

I just watched an interview with a disease/virus specialist, he caught the virus on a plane and was in his hospital bed...he was wearing a mask on the airplane, and said he caught the virus through his eyes. He said 3 points of entry are possible, mouth, nose, eyes....so start wearing approved goggles ASAP

I've been all over the country during this chit. I'm fine. Everybody I know is fine. We're just not pretending we're somehow safe because we stand six feet back from the next idiot. I'm using cash, I'm filling my gas tank, I'm picking up cans of tomatoes put on a shelf by somebody else an hour before... I'm as exposed as everybody else. Those stupid cloth masks aren't saving anybody.

I think the short bus riders are the ones who convince themselves that they're somehow safer than anybody else at the grocery store. Turn your own brain on.

You make it sound like your some special flower because you've been outside.

I've been working right through, been on 25+ different sites interacting with hundreds of people who I have zero knowledge of their history. I'd go so far to say Roids is probably the only person who has had more interactions with strangers because of his job than I have.

What part of precautions are you missing? Where I'm not going to be in a packed restaurant compared to one where they have taken precautions to keep some space between their guests?

Or that instead of flying out of YVR and the tens of thousands of people, I'll fly out of Abby with 10 other people for a cheaper price?

I'll still use the ferries, I'll still go to work, go shopping, to to the beach, use hotels. I'll carry sanitizer and wash my hands more than I used to.  I'm just not going to be the toilet licker who is pretending everything is normal and help spread the virus that is still very prevalent.

All that to say "yes, I'm doing the same thing as everybody else, but since I'm wayyyy smarter, I'll be fine."

Total nonsense. This was never going to endanger your life anyways, but you can pretend like you saved yourself and your family by wearing surgical masks to buy coffee at the gas station if it makes you feel better.

I saw that article and didn’t read it clearly, but I think he was saying that he wiped his eyes and that’s how it got in.

I don’t think the implication was that it traveled into his eye randomly through the air.

Its also not weird, every single doctor I’ve seen interviewed about precautions said to not touch your eyes.

That is correct. Limiting contact to mucus membranes using preventive measures just makes sense.

Wearing a surgical mask, glasses, washing your hands a lot, distancing etc. are all effective ways to "limit" exposure.

The only way it's spread is people being in close contact to people spitting while talking, sneezing, coughing or through surfaces that then come in contact to those points of entry.

Extra pre-cautions are not 100% full proof but they be effective & generally speaking it stacks the more you take if you do it in a common sense way.

On the topic of opening up more vs. Gestapo lock down.

Just about every industry is effected. Even the industries that sustain us production is down for a lot then you have to deal with less supply, inflation & to add to that a bunch of people out of work everything just compounds and it's unsustainable.

Businesses are gonna have to adapt & there will emerge a new normal but i'd rather the market decides that more who sinks or swims than fkn bureaucrats & authorities who shouldn't have anything to do with this other than some baseline common sense policies & guidelines. The level of ridiculous over the top enforcement has gone to far.

When even Elon Musk is changing his tune pushing for rights and getting people back to work it's time for the morons to wake up or you gonna be waking up to a slave new world.

Seems like only a few pages ago you were posting the number of cases/deaths doubling every 3 days if nothing was done.  How time flies! Do you think that risk has now passed though?

I think we're in the next phase of this thing now.  The European countries that were hit hard and early (France, Italy, Spain) are starting to open stuff up.  I think the world will be watching to see how that pans out.  It's a difficult balancing act for governments tbh.  They're on a hiding to nothing; there's clearly a number of extra deaths that are okay if it means the economy gets going again, and there is clearly a number that is not okay.  Can you imagine the furore if any politician actually comes out and says that though?

One thing that we do pretty much know for sure is that all the early modelling was wrong.  By the initial models of what would happen if no lockdown is put in place, there should be 30,000 dead Swedes by now; instead there are 3500.  It's tough to make up policy on the fly when there are no accurate models to rely on because we've never seen this stuff before.  I'm pretty sure that the horror stories of Italy getting "overwhelmed" in the first couple of weeks has dictated policy for most of the world, even though there are so many reasons why what happened there would not happen anywhere else.

I understand you mentioned the possible variables in the last sentence, though only 3500 Swedes dying is a direct result of the rest of the world shutting down passenger aircraft. Sweden is relying on a few variables when deciding its course of action. Sweden  is cashing in on doing nothing on the tab the rest of the world is picking up!

Sweden has 10.3M pop, Australia has 25M... you guys have 3.5k deaths we have sub 100....

Who did it better? I havent missed a day of work, nor has my Mrs. You are here talking up a 7000% mortality rate as a positive? Not going to lie here, you talking up how well Sweden is doing. is your latest hot take on " its just a flu". You are way out of your lane on this again!

You've missed my point, Sir Genki,

I'm not talking up Sweden, I'm talking down modelling.  The models said that if Sweden did nothing, 30,000 would be dead by now.  Sweden did nothing, and "only" 3,500 are dead.  My conclusion is not that Sweden did the right thing, or the wrong thing, rather that the initial model was completely and utterly wrong.  It's the same model that caused panic in the UK when they predicted half a million would die by the summer.

FWIW, I'm on the fence about Sweden's approach.  I've spent most of this thread slagging it off (I'm almost starting to think you're not subscribing to my weekly Sweden corona update); they have kind of sacrificed the old to keep things running.  However, until this thing has run its course, it is difficult to know which approach works best.  Sweden's inactivity has likely led to a much higher degree of infection in the country, and consequently there is probably more resistance in the population than anywhere else.

Glad things are going well down under though.

Can you do me a favour and give over with the Swedish updates

Just let us know when Sweden is dead. It’ll clap on my doorstep

They're weekly, by popular demand.  But given your feedback, I'll try and make them daily.

To major centers. For me to get home there are very few people using the airports (Currently). So with a slower start and see where things go, it wont be bad.

Other airports, I am sure will be much different and much more full

Where tf are you and why can't you go home?  Just hire a car and drive m8
