Movies: Favorites by category

Recommended Posts

It's all opinion, but still interesting to discuss and will likely be different for everyone. These don't need to be the movies that you think are the BEST of all time, but the ones that you personally favor for one reason or another. I can happily admit that some of these on my lists are better than others in lower positions, but I just personally like the other one more or there may be a movie like Shawshank Redemption or the Godfather that many think is the greatest of all time... but you won't see either on my all time lists. Let's see and discuss.

**Also, these are all obviously subject to change based on whenever you're asked. My lists could change next week for all I know or even sooner. I actually made these lists over at hooplanation and sportshoopla and some are slightly different than what I am putting here. Those are two competing forums that I primarily use for sports, politics, and movies. I visit both due to the politics. Both sites have posters of various points on the spectrum, but hooplanation has more on the right side and sportshoopla has more from the left. That's the only real difference.**

Dramas

10. A Time To Kill

9. Gone Girl

8. The Departed

7. Prisoners

6. Saving Private Ryan

5. Rocky

4. Forrest Gump

3. Spotlight

2. Good Will Hunting

1. A Few Good Men

Comedies - Probably the most difficult list and one that I could sincerely switch around and replace with numerous other choices

10. There's Something About Mary

9. My Cousin Vinny

8. The Other Guys

7. Tropic Thunder

6. Supertroopers

5. The Nice Guys

4. Grand Budapest Hotel

3. The Hangover

2. Team America

1. Naked Gun

I know some will call blasphemy on not having Airplane or Holy Grail in here.... I like Airplane, but I think the Naked Guns are far superior, but consider it an honorable mention. As for Monty Pythons Holy Grail... I think this is one of the most overrated comedy flicks I have ever seen. It has some funny moments, but I never busted a gut over it. I can see the jokes, but it feels juvenile at best with not much depth and based around silliness and zingers with situational light touches on politics, history, and philosophy.... and honestly, I feel it is dated. It comes off as one of those comedies that was great for it's time, but given the context of what we see and hear nowadays, it doesn't measure up. To each their own though, if it is your favorite, so be it. I just won't agree lol.

Sports Movies

10. Ford v. Ferrari

9. Major League

8. Remember the Titans

7. Friday Night Lights

6. The Fighter

5. Moneyball

4. Peaceful Warrior

3. Warrior

2. Miracle

1. Rocky

Horror/Thriller

10. Frailty

9.  1408

8. Alien

7. Halloween (1978)

6. Seven

5. The Conjuring

4. Signs

3. The Conjuring 2

2. The Exorcist

1. The Thing (1982)

I am interested to learn others and maybe discover some other movies I never really thought or knew about. Also, interested and willing to do more categories. But what say you?

Martial Arts Movies

10. The Protector

7. The Legend of the Drunken Master

6. Kung Fu Hustle

5. The Matrix

4. Warrior

3. Rumble in the Bronx

2. Enter The Dragon

1. The Raid Redemption

If you have not seen The Raid Redemption... check it out. It has some badass fight scenes and is pracitcally nonstop from start to finish. I wanted to put more Jackie Chan on, but I could probably to an entire list of Chan honestly. But Rumble in the Bronx is a special one for me as it was my first Jackie Chan movie.

With that said... Jackie Chan is the GOAT.  Fight me.

Nice. That is a different horror list than I have been seeing, it seems as if you perfer quite a few sequels... don't get that too often in horror movies.

How could I forgot action, I made that list as well, just forgot to post it... also tip my hat to Commando, one of my favorite Arnold movies.

I'm in the rate category that prefers Halloween 2 to the first movie. The hospital setting, the chase scene, and the ending is some if the best IMO.

TCM2 was a perfect horror movie for me. I still remember being a kid and seeing the opening car/truck scene when the kid got his head sliced.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of sequels sucked, especially in the Halloween franchise (and lesser so in TCM, i enjoyed 3 and generation) but there was a few that were better imo

Your taste in comedy is going to make me check out your other picks. Quality line up there. The Problem Child movies are underrated.

Quick question since you're a horror movie guy. Did you like House of 1000 Corpses?

House grew on me after the first watch. Sid Haig played an awesome role in that movie and Bill is in it too

For me, martial arts has got to be Enter The Dragon, For some reason,  I can't stop laughing whenever I watch Rocky III. Mr. T is hilarious! Horror has to be the original Night of the Living Dead. Action - Gladiator, First Blood (Rambo), Dirty Harry.

Yeah, not me lol. I was actually happy when they released Halloween 2018 getting rid of everything but the first movie (iirc). I also thought that Halloween 2018 was done very well, I liked it.

I have not seen TCM2 actually. I have seen the original, the one with McConaughey, and then the one with Jessica Biel. I understand how big the first one was to horror movies, but I ended up giving it a 6 out of 10 I think. While the psychotic family was excellent, the protagonists were completely awful actors.

Rob Zombie is awful.

1. He doesn't direct for horror as much as he does for just the awe/gross/f'ed up style... It's classified only as horror because of the violence and gore imo and that's really it. He doesn't build suspense, tension,.... horror.

2. In every movie he puts the worst possible characters in the lime light. There is a way to do anti-heroes... but that ain't it. There is a reason the best horrors have a perfectly separated protagonist and antagonist, its all about balance.

So yeah... not a fan lol.

With that said, I remember liking Problem Child when I was a kid. Haven't watched since then though so I am not sure how it holds up.

Warrior - solid choice

Natural born killers

Blood in Blood out - never seen

Horror:

The Omen trilogy - never seen

Hellraiser 1,2 and 4 - the thing I like most about Hellraiser is that I can sum it up in that an entire series was spawned from the greatest lay one ever had.

28 week later - I tried to like these, but just couldn't get into it.

Evil dead movies / series - Classic.

Action:

El mariachi

Desperado

Assassins

Ip man 1 and 2

Ong bak 1 and 2

Tom Yum Goong

Hacksaw ridge was good and FMJ is a classic.

Might I suggest The Great Raid as a good war movie to check out. I came looking to see if anyone posted war movies expecting to cringe because the most well known and popular are usually the worst IMO.

I didn’t mind your list.

Yeah I rewatched Split recently and reconfirmed my opinion of it being ****ing awesome. McAvoy (the beast) was absolutely tremendous. I didn't like Glass the first time, but I heard it is better on a second viewing. I plan on doing that as soon as some place picks it up on stream.

I really liked Into The Wild when it came out. Interstellar is underrated I think, I say that in that I think it is Nolans best film, but that opinion isn't shared by too many lol. Are you talking about the 1990 Total Recall or the 2012? The one from 2012 sucked, I thought.

Indepednence Day is a classic. I flirted with it and Armageddon on my action list and decided to go with Independence Day. Neither are fantastic movies, but both are fun, funny, dramatic, and just simply entertaining.

Yeah I rewatched Split recently and reconfirmed my opinion of it being ****ing awesome. McAvoy (the beast) was absolutely tremendous. I didn't like Glass the first time, but I heard it is better on a second viewing. I plan on doing that as soon as some place picks it up on stream.

i have it for "free" on prime video , but i live in the Netherlands so i have no clue if we have any differences in the content provided.

Yeah, Unbreakable, Split, and Glass are all part of this makeshift superhero universe.

I am sure there are a lot of good ones, but I have either not seen (12 Angry Men) or it has been too long to count seeing (To Kill A Mockingbird) some of more known courtroom movies. Just trying to be fair to what I remember. Fracture is in the last spot because I would hardly call it a courtroom movie though there are some good courtroom scenes, it is a good movie nonetheless.

Courtroom Movies
10. Fracture
9. Runaway Jury
8. Just Mercy
7. Rainmaker
6. Primal Fear
5. Philadelphia
4. JFK
3. My Cousin Vinny
2. A Time To Kill
1. A Few Good Men

Heartbreak Ridge is not a better movie.... but I like it more than Hacksaw Ridge lol. Clint is a badass in that movie lol.

Not that it makes a movie better necessarily, but Hacksaw ridge is based on a true story which I always find to be more compelling.

Ive never seen heartbreak ridge, so I can’t say whether or not it’s better, but I’ve never heard of it spoken of particularly highly.

The Great Raid is a true story, the combat scenes are realistic and the tactics showed are true to real life, and it keeps the Hollywood cringe moments to a minimum. There is definitely some over the top cringe, but not as much as usual.

Clint was drafted during the Korean War and then spent the war as a swimming instructor at Fort Ord.

I feel like he regretted not going to Korea based on how many war movies he made throughout his career.

Truffaut once said "there's no such thing as an anti-war film because war by its nature is exciting."  Watch Klimov's 1985 film about WW2 Come and See. proves this statement dead wrong. one of the most disturbing films i've seen.

It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it. - Robert E. Lee

I still catch Jingle All the Way once almost every Christmas. I love that movie.

Getting a Ps5 felt like trying to track down a Turboman.
