Khabib Nurmagomedov never fought a high-level wrestler, says Colby Covington

Khabib Nurmagomedov might be retired, but the debates about his fighting career are still going on. The latest take about Khabib’s career came from former UFC Interim champion Colby Covington who said that Khabib never fought a high-level wrestler.

Colby went on to add that Khabib even had a tough time against Gleison Tibau.

"Khabib Nurmagomedov never really fought a high-level wrestler that could challenge him or that was good, you know, in both areas of striking and wrestling and submissions and defensive wrestling. So, you know there's always been those doubts about Khabib's legacy... Even, a lot of people thought that he lost to a guy he used to train with all the time, Tibau. Gleison Tibau. He won a split decision over him but a lot of people thought he lost that fight so I definitely think that puts a damper on Khabib's legacy,” Colby had noted in his recent interview with Submission Radio.

Recently, Dana White had also talked about how Khabib cannot be considered as the UFC G.O.A.T due to his early retirement. The Russian ended his MMA career back in October 2020 with an unblemished record of 29-0 which saw him pick up wins against names like Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor, Edson Barboza, and Justin Gaethje.

Since his retirement, Khabib has shifted focus to his business endeavors and is now enjoying his time as a promoter for Eagle Fighting Championship.

Yes, I wish we could had watched Khabib fighting against someone with all the attributes that Colby mentioned BUT it was not Khabib’s fault that this fighter didn’t come along.

His dad passed away and he stated that he would no longer fight without his dad so it is hard to attack him for that.

I wish he would come back to fight Oliveira and Usman but we know it wouldn’t happen.

Khabib fought in the UFC for almost 10 years (I'm not googling the exact figure.) To have managed to avoid fighting a high-caliber wrestler in a sport dominated by high-caliber wrestlers for that entire stretch was no accident.

The UFC managed to avoid signing pedigreed wrestlers in the lightweight division for a few years there, which is an incredible feat, baffling to a degree which leads me to think it was a conspiracy.  I remember doing a little web browsing and I found that Khabib was signed around the same time a Abu Dhabi based corporation bought a significant share in the UFC.  It's a long-shot, but my theory is there was a backroom deal where Dana promised to try clear the path for a Muslim champion in exchange for the deal.  And there has never been a path in the UFC so clear as the one blazed for Khabib.

I know mate but what we saw is that Khabib let the UFC hanging out of a huge rematch with Conor that would make a bunch load of money but also Khabib starting his own promotion.

I can see where you are coming from but I still think Dana would not agree to it considering that they want the monopoly of MMA

When the UFC signed Khabib, he was a very, very young man and he could only see so far ahead.   It’s unlikely he anticipated Khabib opening his own promotion, and i’m sure he’s not too fond of that.

I thought he lost the Tibau fight as well, but it's all water under the bridge and he officially retired undefeated. Gaethje is a stellar wrestler but it's almost like he's forgotten how - I know a lot of the wrestlers say it's something you need to continually practice if you want to keep your timing, and Justin seems to be more focused on throwing hands than anything else.

I actually wanted to see him fight Brian Ortega, as that would've been an interesting stylistic matchup. Khabib's constant pressure and top control and Ortega's infamous grappling game. I'd still favor Khabib since submission wrestling > pure BJJ, especially in an MMA contest. That Ortega match almost happened too.

Who could he have fought?  Gregor?  That dude is Kevin Lee's only win in 6 years and he got head kick KO'ed.  Kevin Lee got strangled by RDA and Khabib beat a prime RDA 30-26.

Colby on about 14 different occasions has bragged about having a lower walking weight than Dustin.  Maybe he should've went to lightweight after the first Usman fight.  They would've let him jump the line because it's just business.  They know he would say a lot of crazy **** and be all pro Murica/Trump.  Call him Kabob and just as he's saying he would point out that he's never fought a wrestler like himself.

The truth of the matter is most people's conception about Khabib not fighting a high level wrestler are very untrue, in fact, he's faced several.

Al Iaquinta has great wrestling -- got shut down by Khabib.

Justin Gaethje got shut down.

And going way back, Abel Trujillo (who is a much better wrestler than a lot of people realize since he never made it to the top of the card since he had more a tendency to get into wild brawls rather than to properly use his wrestling), well. We know how that ended. Khabib broke the record for most takedowns landed in a single fight against Abel. Abel completely shut down Marcus LeVesseur who was one of the best wrestlers in NCAA history.

"On July 16, 2019, he was charged with the sexual exploitation of a child,[53] and on March 6, 2020, Trujillo pleaded guilty to promoting obscenity. His sentencing was scheduled for April 6, 2020.[54] Trujillo was sentenced to two years of probation on August 31, 2020."

If Abel is your "go-to guy"when you want to prove a point, I'm not comfortable debating with you.

Nice projection. I do not support Abel whatsoever. I was only pointing out his wrestling skill. But the dude is scum of the earth.

I am not comfortable debating someone who jumps to conclusions like a toddler who hasn't had its bedtime story yet.

Listen, I’m just not ready to concede my position.  I’ve been on the same side of the debate for a long time, so if you’re bringing in any facts which weaken my argument, I’m gonna have to use dirty tricks.

Lol

I don't like considering Jon Jones in the Top 5 considering how much of a POS he is, but facts are facts.
Doesn't mean I sympathize.
