The_Q
I see both of these terms thrown around alot....and many times they seem to be used incorrectly (as i understand them) or interchangeably (which is wrong). As i understand it and had it explained to me: World class means you competed in international BJJ competitions and won, meaning you have world championship status in BJJ. Elite Level means you have competed against other world class BJJ practitioners and beat them, meaning you are among the best of the best. Elite. agree? disagree? Elite. agree? disagree?[/quote'] I think some people, JOE ROGAN, use these two terms WAYYYYYY too much. Here's how I see it: World Class is winning in BJJ's top tournaments (Abu Dhabi and Mundials). Guys like Jacare, Demian Maia, BJ Penn, Gaberial Gonzaga, Fabricio Werdum, Dean Lister, etc. Elite level BJJ is someone who either competetes at the top and loses or competetes in a lot of lower level tournaments and wins them. GSP, Joe Stevenson, Wagney Fabiano, Tony De Souza, etc.

The_Q
is there an official correct usage of each (and I'm asking for sources), or is just opinion? i really thought there that Elite was tops....not World class.

RevelationWT
Yeah for me the elite is the creme de-la creme - Maia, Jacare, Palhares, several Gracies etc World class would make me think more of tourneys abhu dhabi (spelling!) where it could be person after person but as we know there's familiar faces winning dfifferent tourneys. Like at the top of the game but the elite would be submitting them. Or maybe the orld class would be the tourney runners up who lose to the elite like Maia etc who just keep on winning. It's not too important in the bigger picture ... or is it? That's my definition anyway.

RevelationWT
There it is people. I was about to point this out as well but Kang already handled it. Is this some sort of official ruling or underground BJJ talk? Doesn't elite generally mean the absolute best whereas world class tends to mean a certain level of competition? You can be elite without being world class. I can't say the same of the opposite.
