Thoughts about who can beat Lyoto Machida

Before I start here, let me make it clear that more than find someone capable of beating Machida, we should find someone who can hit him, and hit him hard! Lyoto are used to get out the octagon with a face better than mine when I shave my beard!

With that in mind, let's move on. To make this more interesting, let's talk about LHW and HW from UFC and other organizations as well. Of course nobody is 100% right, so I expect your thoughts in the end ok?

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

He should be the first contender to LHW belt, but in a private talk to Dana White Rampage told him that he would like to face Rashad Evans declaring that he have "unfinished business" with him. That sounds like he just ran away from the title shot... but he has a good reason: his punches have power, but he's technically limited and not capable of making a good game plan to fight someone with unique style as Machida. If Rashad who trained with one of the best strategy makers in MMA (Greg Jackson) couldn't land some punches on Lyoto's face, I believe that Rampage could just pray hoping to have luck and hit one of that his power punches. Anyway, Rampage admitted that he have to improve his wrestling to face Lyoto.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

Here we have a really interesting fight. (I'm not gonna miss that for nothing!)

Shogun looks to getting back on his feet, just like his old times on PRIDE, when it was him who put fear in everybody with his powerful and accurate stand-up fighting. He went through two surgery and was a in a bit of a trouble with Forrest Griffin and Mark Coleman, but he still have potencial to do some real damage. Another interesting thing on this one is that he trained with Lyoto for a while...

Forrest Griffin

His chances after that fight with Anderson Silva are not good as it used to be. Like Spidey, Machida is also an excellent and accurate striker and really good on his attacking and defensive stance. Just like Rampage, he doesn't have tactical approach to win a fight against Machida. Maybe he have a little advantage over Rampage because of his "attack without fall back" style, that keep getting hit and advancing at the same time... what could just raise the chances of landing one power punch in the right place to shut Machida down. At the same time, going like this towards Machida is like having a death wish!

Wanderlei Silva

That Wanderlei who dominated PRIDE with his vicious style, power and speed still taking part of our best MMA's memory. Today's Wandy, specially that one who fought last, is one who didn't know how to recreate himself, and that one does not stand a chance against Machida. But as legends should always be respected, we hope to see him fight like the old times again. His next fight should tell us how hard Wandy is training and how hard he still wants to be the best. His defensive stance, or lack of that, is like an invitation to be KO by Machida. We have to remember as well that Wanderlei is going to MW...

Rich Franklin

Maybe that fight against Belfort would be good to show us his current skills. I would say that, if he was not been wiped out by Anderson Silva. Twice. A lot of people could say "ok, but Anderson is far better than Belfort". Agreed, but the gap between Lyoto and Anderson is smaller than the gap between Belfort and Lyoto. The chances of getting wiped out by Machida, like he was by Anderson, are huge. Finally, let's remember that this fight happened in the past, in Lyoto's 3rd professional fight, when he KO the so long undefeated Rich Franklin.

Dan Henderson

He's not young as before and even if he was, his almost "uni-dimensional" fighting style, pure wrestling, typical product of Team Quest, is like a "Today's special" for Lyoto. As he doesn't have the power of Rampage, Forrest or Thiago Silva, plus his advanced age, I could say he doesn't have a chance. BUT he never got KO AND he is a legend of the sport... anyway, my money is on Machida.

Randy Couture e Mark Coleman

It would be best that these two other legends of MMA just keep their fight history as it is. The Natural and the Hammer are natural wrestlers, something that Machida loves, and with over than 40 years old, it would be better for them to keep distance.

Chuck Liddell

The young Iceman could have done what we expected Rashad Evans to do: using a smart game plan capable of luring Machida into a trap and take advantage of powerful counter strikes. But Lidell was KO in 3 of his last 5 fights, including by Rashad Evans. Those things alone just raise the chances of Lyoto put the Iceman to sleep... His story in UFC doens't deserve that.

Luiz Arthur ?Banha? Can? e Ryan Bader

With his style based on Muay Thai, the brazilian still have a lot to improve and could be easily taken by Machida in a short term fight. The same goes for the american wrestler. Even after improving, I cannot see enough talent to beat the Dragon. But they will be a threat for other top fighters, for sure.

Jon Jones

Lyoto has already proved how a wrestler could be hurt by him. But Jones doesn't appear to be just like the others. At 21 years old, he shown some ability and versatility against Stephan Bonnar. Of course that is not enough to take him to a title shot, but let's wait to see what he can do against different types of fighters, cause he does show some potential.

Matt Hamill

Charismatic fighter with a good endurance, despite of not being an uni-dimensional fighter and well adapted to MMA, he doesn't have skills to reach the belt. But he will give some trouble to his class top fighters.

Brandon Vera

He arrived saying lots a things, including that joke of "I will hold both belts, HW and LHW". The truth is that he has shown the his skills are light-years of helping him get two belts.

Krzysztof Soszynski

Despite of some improvement, the polish-canadian shouldn't go farther than he already is. I think he doesn't have what it takes to face to top fighters in his class.

Brock Lesnar

Despite of his fenomenal size, agility and condition, we cannot forget that he still have just 4 professional MMA fights, and technically he's still a wrestler learning a new sport. On those four times that he entered the octagon, Brock never faced a style even close to Lyoto's. I think he wouldn't be a fool and just get over Lyoto like a bull. If he does that, we can just imagine Machida with a red cape screaming "Ole!" (like in bull fighting). But if he fights with patience, he could take advantage of his weight, reach and his strong clinch and takedowns to win or at least making a really interesting fight.

Frank Mir

In my opinion he would be in disadvantage on a stand-up fight and I don't see Mir taking down and getting Lyoto to the ground. Case closed.

Shane Carwin e Cain Velasquez

Nearly the same size and strength of Brock Lesnar but with a superior power. They could just win with the right game plan, like the one Carwin did against Gabriel Napao, cause when a punch with the power that these guys have hit someone, is nearly impossible to stay in one piece.

Mirko Cro Cop

Unfortunately Cro Cop is not in the same generation as Lyoto. If he got in shape like in 2005/2006, when he gave a bad time to Fedor and Nogueira, and took out easily Mark Coleman and Wanderlei Silva, he could be a great opponent to Lyoto. Today's Cro Cop, closer to retirement than those good times, is just a candidate to hurt himself and getting embarrassed against Lyoto at his peak. With both of them at their peaks, it could be an unpredictable and awesome fight.

Cheick Kongo

He have size, physical strength and skills in kickboxing, but is far worse than Lyoto, technically speaking, and much slower. Also have a style that Machida must be really used to face, so I think he would be an easy prey.

Fedor Emelianenko

For the first time on this list I have to think a way of Lyoto to beat someone and not the other way around. That could be the most exciting fight in the history of sport. It's a shame that the chances of that happen are nearly none.

Alistair Overeem

Strong and big as Kongo, this kickboxer has the advantage to be complete on his stand-up game. Using those attributes he could try to get close to Lyoto and take advantage of his stronger body to beat Machida.

... is there anyone left? I mean fighters to beat Machida and people who were reading until the end of this thread... lol

PEOPLE (using Machida's voice), give me your thoughts please!

Yea I agree but I don't see being a BJJ master a need

He is too squirmy to keep down

I say a better stand up fighter more then ground fighter is needed to topple that man

How about a Tito Ortiz Rematch? Tito Ortiz performed the best out of anybody in Lyoto's Career in the UFC. Machida was exposed with his wrestling and ground game. I really think Machida really got lucky that the bell rang when he got trapped in the triangle choke.

But besides Tito Ortiz. How about Vitor Belfort? Belfort is a Great Striker and has got a solid chin. He also very fast and Explosive.

Gegard Mousassi....One word describes him. Amazing. This dude is bad ****. In My opinion he has the best chance of becoming the DRAGON SLAYER ! ! ! !;)! .

This is my first post.. been reading the forums for a while and I liked your analysis.

Regarding your analysis of Hendo, although he does use his wrestling alot, I think he has more power than Forrest and Thiago, and atleast as much power as Rampage. His knockout of Wanderlei back in Pride was big and his recent KO of Bisping proved he can still load up with his right. I'm not saying he would beat Machida, because I don't think Hendo's ever fought someone like Machida, but if he ever connected, whoever was on the recieving in could be out.

But since Machida uses his skills to avoid hits, smart money would probably be on Machida. I think it would be an interesting matchup with Hendo's iron jaw against Machida's master avoidance.

But with all that being said, Machida would probably have the edge since he's more technical than Hendo, and he could avoid Hendo's big right. The best chance for Hendo would be to do like you mentioned, and rely on his wrestling. :)

Good thread.

Its gotta be someone with the speed and footwork to catch him and potentially someone with power in the legs. Once caught going into the clinch hasn't worked well for anyone yet with machida, he's very quick to get out of it.

Im going with Vera and Jon Jones on that basis, and throw in mirko too. If someone can kick the bergeebers out of one of Machida's legs it could change everything. Vera and mirko have crazy kicking power, not sure if mirko would be fast enough to catch him.

I think we need to see how shogun goes, i hope shogun tests his ground game, if he can get it their. If he does and fails these are the type of guys to do the job.

Tito exposed his wrestling weakness? I'd say that It highlighted Machida's ability to take down a solid wrestler. I don't think that Tito exposed anything except his own blood and lack of patience. The triangle was very close to a submission, but Machida escaped...wasn't saved by the bell.

Vitor (if on his game) has lightning quick hands and hits with power, Mousassi is extremely crafty and very well-rounded, a more experienced Jones if he can make it past lower ranked opponents to earn a shot at the title....

Agreed. Shogun or Henderson. Not necessarily a better stand up needed though IMO. But a very good stand up is needed, a fighter with power and accuracy, a fighter with an iron chin, a versatile striker. Im leaning towards Shogun for having the best chance, he mixes an all round explosive standing strike game (kicks, punches, knees) with a proven world class grappling game. Henderson would have that punchers chance if he chose to stand and strike with Machida. However, i bet he would not use that tactic, he would use his awesome greco roman ability to rough machida up, and eventually take him down. Both Shogun and Hendo would be able to get on the inside of Machida, i cant see either of those fighters getting KOed by Machida, they both have unbelievable chins.

Anyway ill say it on ALL Machida posts. Can we PLEASE wait until Machida has succssfully defended his title at LEAST 2-3 times before we start making threads like this!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!
