Dana White: Brock Lesnar Press Conference in Las Vegas Next Week

Written by Tom Ngo

January 12th, 2010

UFC president Dana White just announced he and Brock Lesnar will hold a press conference early next week to update the MMA world on the heavyweight champion?s health status.

?I will have something for you guys by Tuesday or Wednesday [next week">,? White told Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com. ?I?m probably going to hold a press conference in Las Vegas. Brock Lesnar will be there.?

As for what the topics of discussion will be, White remained mum on the matter ? pre Team Lesnar?s request.

?I don?t know if it?s good news or bad news, it?s just news,? White coyly stated.

Considering Lesnar hasn?t said jack since falling ill in early November, the fact he?s ready to face the public means significant information should come to light.

Although recent reports from Lesnar?s coach Marty Morgan and former UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture indicate Lesnar has gotten a lot better and recently resumed limited training, White wouldn?t confirm anything, but remained consistent when probed whether his biggest pay-per-view draw would ever see an Octagon again.

?I hope so, I certainly hope so,? White said for the millionth time in the last two days.

Lesnar was last seen unifying the title by dominating then-interim champ Frank Mir at UFC 100. He holds a 4-1 professional record, however has looked unstoppable in his last three wins, two of which were for titles.

The champ was slated to defend his title against Shane Carwin at UFC 106 in November, however was forced to withdraw due to an undisclosed illness. It was later reported Lesnar had contracted mononucleosis, which he then parlayed to an intestinal infection that required surgery a week later.

Following the procedure, it was revealed that Lesnar was actually suffering from diverticulitis, a condition where pouches on your large intestine inflame.

Everything regarding Lesnar?s condition has remained under lock and key, however it appears Lesnar is finally ready to let the world in on what?s kept him bedridden for the past couple of months.

Until we actually hear the announcement I remain skeptical. For all we know it could be to announce his retirement - though personally I think it's good news.

Well, that would be unfortunate because he is a decent fighter, but at least we wouldnt have to read your endless attempts at a bromance with him.

I hope he's not retiring. Didn't Brock take the belt from Randy Couture? If so, which ppv was that on? I'd like to see it.

Hrmmm... I've pondered this a little more and I can't say that I am confident that this is good news at all.

Infact the only time press conferences like this are issued is to either announce retirements' date=' or extended layoffs, perhaps that he is relinquishing the title.

I hope I'm wrong.[/quote']

BUT. It is Brock. And Dana. And The UFC. So, you never know. But let's pray that he is still able to fight in the octagon.

they wouldnt have a big press conference to say hes coming back since he hasnt been out that long' date=' so you know what that means lesnar fans[/quote']

Nah..with all the talk about his illness I wouldn't be surprised to hear a positive announcement.

With all the talk of Mir v Carwin for an interim belt...maybe they are thinking of making it a contender match instead....and since it would look really...unprofessional to have it be...a title fight...then just a fight..then a title fight...they need this big press conference to have Lesnar come out and say....something like..

"I was sick. I'm getting healthier by the day. The title is MINE. And I asked Dana to make the Mir v Carwin fight..a contender bout...and I will fight the winner in June."

That kinda thing. And if Lesnar himself will be at this conference in Vegas...he can't be on deaths door you know?

So...I think it's more of a marketing thing than anything else.

Cheers

We would only hope for that.

Lesnar enjoys his privacy and I don't see him being the type to take part in a press conference unless Dana was behind it. We all know that Dana has hyped up this illness. I personally want to see Lesnar fight again. He has a lot of talent that shouldn't go to waste.

I think Lesnar is going to announce that he'll be back.

i hope he returns but TBH i dont think he will fight this year.

i wanna see him fight nog cain and jds before he retires

He kills Cain.

Nog would be interesting to see how he does against another skilled submission specialist.

Dos Santos is my boy...and he'd have a shot standing...but...who knows. I'd love to see the fight though.

Cheers

Dana doesn't sound that optimistic in the interview. He doesn't sound like he's ready to unload horrifically bad news either.

I'm guessing Brock is out for an extended period of time, and may relinquish his title, but will also pledge that he is committed to returning and likely provide a few more details on his condition.

Either that, or the press conference doesn't happen at all as is usually the way with the UFC.

UFC President, Dana White has revealed that both he and heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar will hold a joint press conference next week in Las Vegas to discuss the man mountains future, or lack of it, in the sport of MMA.

Dana confirmed the news to MMAFighting.com recently on a trip to New York, refusing to elaborate on the nature of the press conference, only saying Lesnar’s future would be out in the open.

Confusing yet positive reports have surfaced recently with Randy Couture revealing he has had conversations with the champ and that he is already back in training ahead of a spring return to the octagon. I guess we’ll find out for sure next week.

Either way if he is healthy again and in training or retiring from MMA, i'm sure they wouldn't have just announced it willy nilly randomly.

Brock is at the moment probably the biggest name in the UFC so no-matter the outcome of his condition they will make a huge deal out if it.

I would be shocked if Randy Couture is making up information regarding Brock's return. Given all the secrecy I think this is nothing more than a Q&A session and I would not be suprised if steroids were brought during it.

Good point. Unfortunate, but good point. Ill be tuning in for sure.

that's because you're a tool. this may be hard for you to fathom, but there are people in this world that are naturally bigger and stronger than you. let me guess: you're about 5'8 150 lbs. and the thought that anyone could possibly be any bigger than you is inconceivable. not everyone is a pencil-necked nerd.

Ha ha, you totally misunderstood my post. 1. I'm a 5'10" 218 lb gym rat;). 2. It is likely it will be brought up because it's an issue in today's competitive sports OPEN YOUR EYES. I am a huge Lesnar fan and thoroughly believe he could have gotten where he is today with no help but given all the secrecy and the rampant usage of steroids today in ALL SPORTs I would not be shocked to see it come up.

OK, I'll admit it -- I'm intrigued. On the one hand, my first impulse is to imagine this is to announce bad news. That would be consistent with how this crisis has been handled up to this point (i.e. without availability, without straightforward answers to every question, without press conferences, etc.).

Maybe Dana White wants to take advantage of this as a PR opportunity to promote his future plans for determining a new heavyweight champion.

But on the other hand this is a critical point in his treatment, and now might be the right time to switch gears and approach it that way. Maybe they just want to sit down and dispell all the rumors.

I'm not a Brock Lesnar fan, but I certainly wish him the best and will be keeping my fingers crossed, hoping for good news.

@ NickTF: You'll have to do better than that if you want to be considered a "true" Brock Lesnar fan! The bar is set high, my friend!

I'm a fan, but not as if Lesnar is the only fighter in the UFC. Further, I don't camp outside of his house or search his name on goggle everyday :P

Truely dislike his attitude as a fighter, but I'll admit he is one hell of a fighter and a great wrestler.

I would hope it is not a retirement announcement.

1) I figure it's, to clear up all the rumors.

OR

2) Announce everything went great and he will be back late summer of fall and ready to fight then.

OR

3) He has caused another issue by starting back training to early, and there is no date date as to when he will be returning, if ever, and he if giving up his title.

(Hope not 3, but I could see he, jumping back into the gym to soon against Doc's orders)

that is an awful big deal just to announce he is back in training. I think he is done.

he is not done, i jsut saw a recent photo of him training with chris tuchscherer on his facebook, it was added last week and when asked about it, he removed it within hours. p.s. the pic had the scar that chris had recived in dec. so it was after dec. 12,2009
