Paul Daley earns new six-fight deal with the UFC

Recommended Posts

The most significant news governing Paul Daley?s burgeoning UFC career is not so much that he will face American wrestler/striker Josh Koscheck ? possibly, as it may change ? on May 1 at UFC 113 in Canada , but that the Nottingham welterweight impressed Zuffa hierarchy sufficiently in his first two outings that he has bought himself serious time in the mixed martial arts organisation.

I can reveal that Daley signed a 6-fight contract with the UFC after defeating Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108, and that he was originally slated to face Koscheck in March -a fight which might have been alongside long-time training partner Dan Hardy?s assault on the UFC welterweight title firmly held by Canadian Georges St Pierre ? which was ruled out by the American?s recovery from injury.

The importance of Daley?s 6-fight contract is that, regardless of his success or failure rate against wrestlers, perceived to be Daley?s greatest weakness in the Octagon, a loss would still enable him to have a run at the title, a prize the fighter covets.

Daley, like Hardy, has revealed this week that he will never fight his friend and training partner, yet there is a developing animosity between the Nottingham training camp and the American Kick-boxing Academy, from where three significant 170lb fighters ply their trade ? Koscheck, Mike Swick and Jon Fitch.

Daley said yesterday on his social networking page: ?Looks like the date is set, time to give Mr Koscheck an education in Semtex beatdown??Only problem there is no pass grade in this class for him?He fails?..Roll on UFC 113, May 1st, Canada.?

Koscheck, moreover, confirmed the fight on Twitter. ?Ok, here we go, let the **** talking start. I am fighting Daley, May 1, co-main event UFC113. This kid is going to get what he?s asking for.?

However, fans may be jumping the gun, given that Floyd Mayweather may face Shane Mosley that night in a high profile pay per view boxing event. That has come about with Andre Berto withdrawing from his contest with Mosley as a result of family members being caught up in the Haiti earthquake disaster.

UFC president Dana White suggested yesterday that the mixed martial arts organisation may yet decide to switch the date for UFC 113.
