I tend not to use the phrase LOL unless I am actually laughing out loud.

I'm a lyricist with a degree in rhetoric, so this is actually something I've thought about a lot...

You qualified this poll with the word "lyrical," which is ambiguous to those who don't listen to Hip Hop (or Rap, whatever you want to call it in its modern condition), but I understand you completely.

Still, in any Argument of Evaluation (<--actual rhetorical term), you must develop a criteria, or in other words, "what qualifies as "lyrical.'"

This will be relative to the one developing it, but in terms of "lyrical" within the genre of Hip Hop, you are referring to many things.

The name Eminem as the most "lyrical" rapper, and the first reason you provide is his "battling prowess." You, therefore, imply that the most important element within your evaluative criteria is the lyricists' ability to "battle." Many philosophical and cultural questions arise from this, but I don't have time to elaborate and the majority of curious UFC fans who opened this article don't care to hear them.

BUT, I will challenge this element within your criteria for being too relative and specific to the culture and sensibilites of Hip Hop. What I mean is, ONLY or at least MOSTLY those who adhere to Hip Hop even CARE about one's ability to slander another individual lyrically--it is a destructive competition that is often taken too far, resulting in many deaths under the guise of artistic expression.

A more universal criteria, in terms of being "lyrical," as you put it, would be to examine the lyricists' craft through qualities consistent with all forms of music, such as music theory, vocal talent, complexity of lyrics, etc.

In this case, through my more universal criteria, I would choose Eminem, as you have.

His craft is unparalled within the realm of Hip Hop, and he is one of VERY few rappers who are talented enough to transcend their genre and are able to be LEGITIMATELY AND GENUINELY compared to great artists of other genres of music.

This list abbreviates specifically Eminem's "lyrical" qualities:

-Most complex multi-syllabic rhymes while remaining seemless and coherent

-One of the most capable and versatile voices, regularly employing ACTUAL and UNASSISTED harmonization in his music, which is unfortunately uncommon in Rap, especially without auto-tune or other vocal enhancements

-Powerful music theory; his lyrics complement the music in a brilliant and revolutionary interaction.

But don't take my word for it. Elton John, one of the greatest songwriters of all time, has publicly praised Eminem's craft, saying that he is a "brilliant lyricist" during a VH1 interview: http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1449925/20011011/john_elton.jhtml

No other rapper has received Elton's enthusiastic and outright endorsement--the saying, "it takes one to know one" can apply here.

I could write a novel on why Eminem is one of the most gifted lyricists of all time, but no one would read it, and sadly, very few care. Though, his achievements within the realm of lyricism and more generally, oratory are priceless.

Oh...and when I said the above...

I meant "one" as in "brilliant lyricist"...lol

not homosexual...

LOL!!!!!

there goes my rhetoric credentials!

oh, one more thing, the second best "lyrical" rapper is...

the guy who did the Obama Rap in "I can do whatever I like"...

lol

classic...

I respect everyone's taste in music, as it is your own opinion. That being said, your poll is a bit laughable. Like someone else said, Biggie, Nas and Eminem(my choice for tops all time) would probably be in anyone's argument for best rapper, but the rest should be left in the dust. To try and find a greatest would be impossible, because no one would ever agree on it.

When I think about a 'greatest' I think lyrics, innovation, staying power, and above all originality. There are few rappers who transcend their own generations. Guys like LL Cool J and KRS One were no doubt ahead of their times. Guys like Rakim and Pac brought their own style to the game of rap that many tried to emulate. As far as today's generation is concerned, you'd be lying if you said Jay-Z and Lil Wayne haven't changed the game of rap. Although I think hip-hop has gone down hill in recent years, they still deserve credit for doing the things they have done.

And here is to everyone I left out, cause there were many more influencial lyricists that I hold in high regard, just like the rest of you may feel I left people out. From Jedi Mind Tricks to Bone Thugs, from Kool Rap G to the Sugar Hill Gang, everyone deserves some respect.

Vinnie Paz is a great lyracist, and, if you haven't checked out Cham's mixtapes, do so. The guy is one of the best lyricists I've heard. Also, RA the Rugged man. Check out this song, his verse is the second and he's telling it through first person as his father, who is a war hero in 'Nam.

Some of the lyrics aren't interpreted correctly, but listen to RA rip this track. Probably the best verse I've ever heard in my life.

Vinnie Paz is cool but, his style dosen't seem to change much. I just started listening to RA and I think you are right. The man is tight.

Lil wayne is my favorite however he doesn't really have lyrical depth. He is very creative and different then everybody.

Eminem was very lyrical in his older stuff his newer stuff in my opinion blows.

Papoose has some cool stuff but most of it doesn't have depth.

Kid cudi is under rated but still hes not on that level as most.

50 cent very lyrical in his older stuff new stuff blows.

Jay his new album is pretty lyrical.

Drake in my opinion is the best up coming rapper and I think he is very lyrical.

Camron just blows. He had one song with cam cam blam blam sam sam in one of his songs.

Should have added Jeezy' date=' Ludacris, Drake, Jay, Wayne, the list could go on and on I guess you gotta cut it somewhere.[/quote']I can only agree with Luda (though I don't consider him a lyracist, he's a punchline rapper more so) and Jay, and Jay's album with that song "Jigga what" was off the chain. He used to rap so much different when he was with Big L, then he switched his style up. He's always saying "RIP BIG", but never Big L, and Big L paved the way for Jay. Jay is a punk for that IMO.

I aint listened to any decent hip-hop in an age so after this thread decided to stick some on, anyways ended up listening to Triumph by the Wu-Tang and fk me to this day Inspecta Deck just blows me away on that track.

Not saying its the greatest ever or anything but like i say just blew me away as much as it did first time i ever heard it.

Inspectah Deck - Triumph:

"I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies

And hypotheses can't define how I be droppin these

Mockeries, lyrically perform armed robbery

Flee with the lottery, possibly they spotted me"

this is a poll about lyrics and wordplay and metaphors and punch lines.. KRS is a joke next to Papoose... use your brain this isn't the list of the best of all time it is only based on word play and lyrical skills.. please cool g rap and sugar hill lolol that is very laughable as there word play are very weak.. they didn't even start using combo words yet...

your lame and stuck in the past.. please don't waste your time typing if your not going to read the thread... my poll stands correct .. who is more lyrical then these rappers on the poll??? The onlys ones i left out is RAKIM,

LOL@LL COOL J.. please his songs are simple still stuck in the past.. canibus killed him lyrically

if you knew anything about lyrics then you would know that eminem is probably the greatest lyricist in our time.. sit back and listen to his word play.. he is sick.. ask any other rapper
