Im going to my first class this week and I was just wondering what I should bring. Am I okay with just shorts a t-shirt and a cup?? or do you even wear a cup haha I have no clue.

Also for anyone who also trains bjj how was your first time joining. Was it very difficult as a beginner or did you have fun right away and catch on quickly. Just wondering what I should expect.

Yes wear shorts' date=' t-shirt and a cup. The cup isn't manditory but i'd advise wearing one. My first class was good. I'd done previous martial arts and caught on quickly due to knowing some of the BJJ stuff from UFC and learning techniques on youtube but yeah it was fun.[/quote']

Thanks. I was also wondering how this beginner class works. If it has been going on for a couple of months now will I have missed out on some of the basics or do instructors go over things again.

My first BJJ class was taught by some blue belt who got his belt in a seminar to qualify to teach. I made him tap easy and got half his class to come to Judo.

+1. I'm a Judo guy myself. What rank are you?

BJJ uses a gi. u must get a gi in order to advance belts. dont wear shoes. dont talk. bow to the center of the mat before and after u enter the mats. be very respectfull and call ur instructor master (black belt). come to class early and stay late.

There's no-gi JJ too, just so you know. Belts aren't everything buddy. Matt Hughes could easily tap a purple or maybe even a brown belt in JJ and he's never had a JJ belt in his life. But fighting with a gi in Judo or JJ is different than with a gi. A lot different.

I've been doing Judo for 9 years now, and BJJ for about 2. The first time I rolled with the JJ instructor he tapped me pretty quickly. The matwork between Judo and JJ are much different. I thought I would do much better than I did rolling with the JJ instructor. It's increased my Judo matwork by a ton. Just expect to get tooled for a few weeks by the experienced guys before you notice yourself getting better.

If they don't catch you up to the rest of the class, you'll eventually learn what they've been tought on your own by rolling with the others. If it's a beginner class, they probably haven't done anything too dificult yet. I wouldn't worry too much

This is not typical....actually just the opposite. Judo players usually get pwned on the ground by BJJ guys. You were at a ****ty school obviously...the first clue should have been the bluebelt teaching the class.

I know. The guy never deserved a blue belt. He got his from a Gracie seminar. I wish we had a quality club in town.

If you have seen some people without a gi I recommend you to go without it too on your first class and then ask the master if the class is with gi or not.

You asked what you should bring to your class, here it is:

- Gi (see if it's needed first, the gi can be of any color)

- Water (if you are of the lightest like me on the class you can't forget to bring water because you will have heavier guys trying to compress your chest and abdomen)

- Genital Protectors (some people don't need it, I think it's a lot useful because when some is trying to pass your guard he may compress your balls acidentally and the same can happen if you attempt an armlock.

And btw, you will not win a fight in weeks/months if your class is already advanced, it's normal.

Very true. Do not get frustrated, things will start to click through time.

And most importantly have fun. Train for the right reasons.

How are most classes structured? Does the instructer go over a technique and then you practice it with someone?

Bow in, Some start with basic break falls and basic conditioning. Stretch. Then they go over techniques and ask you to find a partner close to your size to practice on. After a few techniques it is sparring time, you get to roll with different people for 2-5 minutes and switch. then cool down and bow out.
