Shane Carwin vs Frank Mir

Mir has proven he's top notch.

Carwin is still an unknown in a few areas..but what we DO know is he has quite possibly the most brutal KO power IN THE SPORT. That's a good thing to have in your pocket. But Carwins fight have not really displayed all aspects of his game...and they haven't gone very long...so yeah..some unknowns there.

On a proven skill basis...Mir wins.

But factoring in the insane KO power of Carwin and his unknown ground game...I'd say I'd place it at somewhere like 60% - 40% favoring Mir.

So while the "punchers chance" is hard to quantify..I'll say based on what we DO know...and based on the work Mir is doing.

Mir wins. But it's a tough call either way. Look at what just happened in Lawler's fight.

Cheers

The standup goes to Carwin, solely based in his KO power. Mir might actually be the better boxer (I can't stop thinking that although he KO'd Napao, Carwin's boxing looked a little poor in the technical aspect) but standing up with someone that KO's people with arm punches isn't the best decision ever. But Mir is an intelligent guy, and he's prob gonna avoid it. Or not, and we get another Kongo.

The ground game goes to Mir, although he has already shown difficulty handling good wrestlers in the ground. It's all about top position. If Mir manages to get on top, Carwin is toast. However, if Carwin takes Mir down and shows enough patience (the gameplan has already been showcased by Lesnar) he might extract a TKO.

I'm having a hard time seeing how can this one go to the judges. Both of these guys have dangerous weapons to finish the fight.

Mir is the favorite, but Carwin has much more than a puncher's chance of taking the Interim belt,

I agree, I haven't seen enough of Carwin to say with certainty that he's a top level fighter yet and can beat Mir, on that basis I'd go with Mir for this one. I'd be more than happy for Carwin to prove me wrong though and this is his chance to prove that he is a top level fighter. Very excited for this fight.

Yeah pretty much where I am.

Mir is good and he's proven it.

Carwin is a bit hard to quantify...but we know he has KO power.

Mir ALSO knows Carwin has KO power. And it's ALOT easier to train in camp...to stay away from that big shot and fight smart...than it is to train to be an overall better fighter than the other guy in one training camp.

Yeah, that's basically where I stand too. On Carwin's ground game, we only know his credentials, he still has to show if it translates to the UFC. Solely based on what we've seen, Mir is the most well rounded of the 2.

I hope Frank Mir takes this fight, he is infact the better fighter imo, and hopefully doesnt take that one random shot that ends it, but, im not exactly excited to see a Lesnar vs Mir III in the summer, i feel its just too soon, and half of lesnar's fights would be from Mir, if it ends up this way i feel like we could be seeing 4-5 Lesnar-Mir fights, not so interested in that, i want to see some new blood

I really think by virtue of skills alone Mir takes this fight. I really hate seeing the punchers chance win fights. It doesn't showcase skills, it just showcases, OMG I hope I can hang with this guy long enough to get the big bomb in because that's all I have.

Carwin will come in with a Lesnar approach. Betcha $100 to a doughnut that Mir will have trained to defend against that extensively after the last Lesnar fight. If Lesnar comes in with that game plan again, I have a feeling Mir has fullest intentions to break his arm.

well if you look at fight record stats, Carwin has 6 KO wins and 5 Submission wins! so he knows how to play the ground game too. Now don't get me wrong i'll still side and say Mir has the better of the ground game when it comes to technique, but it will be hard to submit Carwin with his level of strength. And i don't think Carwin's gonna let it go to the ground, he'll stuff Mir all day. Carwin will leave with the victory by KO late 1st round or early 2nd round. Mir will become his longet fight so far in his MMA career.

I dont think Carwin will shoot straight in for a takedown. He does have good wrestling but I dont think hes as keen to jump on a ground battle with Mir as Brock was, especially since no matter how much bigger Mir has gotten Carwin still has more power in his hands. Nobody is taken shots from this guy and shruggin em off. If Mir wants this one on the ground I think he will have to take it there but we will see.

... Carwin really dosen't have the cred to hang w/ Francisco, never fought past 2:11 & that was his debut, ... a win for Carwin moves him up bigtime, loss for Mir & its Strikeforce bound .. "Mir vs Emelianenko"

I like Carwin and Mir' date=' and they are both top knotch fighters but who is going to prevail?[/quote']

I'm going to say Carwin but you never know Mir has a good ground game and his stand up is good to, he finished Nog and look what he did to Kongo,

It's funny because most people are saying Carwin hasn't proven himself but to me Mir hasn't proven himself. Mir's best wins were agaisnt Tim Syliva (submission) and Tim has a very weak ground game. Brock (lucky submission), and Nog who I can't take anything away from him for that one but Nog looked very bad on the feet during that fight.

So for me Carwin is a beast and Mir is really over hyped and if Carwin wins I won't be surprised and if Mir wins he'll finally be were most other people see him in my eyes.

Carwin will not come in with a Lesnar approach he will come in to KO Mir, and I just wanted to say I like the punchers chance because to me if you can't finish fights you don't have any business getting into them.

I cannot wait for Brock/ Mir 3. I believe that Brock is gonna retire Mir this time. And that is said based on the fact that Mir's sole drive right now in mma is to Beat Brock again. And once that doesnt happen, then what reason would he have to stay in UFC........As for the Carwin/ Mir fight, DONT BLINK

Ha Ha Ha that would be great!

I agree with you're thread man, Mir could get knocked out but I think there is a slightly higher chance that this fight will end up like Mir's last fight with Kongo

And I'm willing to bet money this fight won't go to the judges

Well, I went and watched Carwin's UFC fights recently. I would love to see his debut, someone tapped out from strikes ? :D

He will not try for a takedown unless a punch hurts him. He can hold Mir up. He has the strength, height, and skill to keep it standing, and the power to knock Mir out cold.

Why would he risk being submitted ? keep it standing and bang. I see TKO or KO in first round to Carwin. Lesnar might last a bit longer but the same result.

VERY very tough fight to pick, we haven't seen enough of Carwin. No doubt he is a beast!! Looking forward to this matchup more than the Machida Shogun rematch.

I enjoy watching both fighters, mir cause he has been around for awhile and he is a very smart fighter and good ground game and carwin is a exciting guy to fight never know how his fight will end, I thought he was done for in the gonzaga fight then all of a sudden one quick straight punch and its over....all in all I think and hope its a great fight

I think we'll at least see Mir drop him, may not be a KO or TKO, but I see Carwin going down. From what I can remember from all of Carwins fights, he's all offense. He just stares his opponents down while taking shots to the face until he gets his hands on them. But when you've got punches with 265+ lbs behind them, youre gonna want to be out of the way. Carwin's chin can't last much longer, Gonzaga got his eyes to roll back, and if mir has the power to send Kongo flying across the canvas...he can at least rock Carwin a bit.

i like both mir and carwin but i dont think carwin has been tested enough by top contenders for anyone to make any kind of intellegent prediction..

im just going to guess mir just because carwin is so untested he hasnt lost yeah thats right but look what happened to Mir when he lost to lestard look what happened to bj pen when he lost to gsp...

Carwin wins pretty quick. Maybe a second round but I doubt it. Mir is bigger and looked great his last fight, but come on guy. Really do we want to see Mir get his face smashed in by Lesnar again? I admire the guys heart, and can certainly understand having hate for someone so much. But Mir needs about a year before he tries Lesnar again. IDK, I could be wrong though with Brock coming off that illness, maybe it's Mir's chance to take advantage. I really don't see it happening though. And I'm not a Mir or Lesnar fan. I like Dos Santos and hopes that he'll get his name in the loop this year.

-Enjoy!

just like to stae huge lesnar fan this is not gonig to be a close fight what so ever carwin is so trash its unreal before beating gonzaga he was getting picked apart by the better fighter mir will expose his flasws beat him standing up or on the ground mir first round tko or sumbmisiion carwin is so overrated

not much to say about shane...besides his obvious heavy hands, and good wrestling pedigree..he has literally fought 3 cans...his only prominent opponent was gonzaga and gonzaga hurt him bad instead of taking his time to finish carwin he rushed in and got caught with a hail mary shot that put him to sleep...reminisce of the jardine vs houston fight...i see alot of similarities between shane and houstons earlier fights...where houston got lucky in knocking out jardine and then beating sakara and having rogan saying he was for real etc...we all know about houston now...i see the same pattern forming here...its hard to gauge his cardio or ground game?since ive never seen it...lol...to say his fight with Mir will be easy or a good test for his eventual fight with Brock is a understatement of biblical proportions...i guess we can argue that he has a punchers chance like the hardy vs GSP fight thats coming up...so goodluck shane and hardy...your both going to need it

As much as I want to see lesnar/mir 3, I really want to see brock fighting new opponents to see where he's really at! I mean 6 mma fights and 3 of them to 1 opponent will be a bit much for now. Im more excited to see what carwin, dos santos and nog have got against lesnar, then the third match with mir if brock gets threw those guys

I think a lot of people are underestimating Carwin, he trains with some of the best fighters in the UFC, in high altitude, and is an extremely intelligent guy. (If you have ever seen him interviewed you know what im talking about) Not to mention a natural born skull crusher.

You know for a fact Shane Carwin has been training for a Championship bout, and with brock's illness had his fight postponed three times. i got a feeling he will be very prepared, and have an exellent game plan to fight MIr.

to say that all Carwin has is a punchers chance is naive. But, to say he is very inexperienced is.....correct, because he has never had a fight last past the first round....not a bad thing if you ask me.

Mir is also and incredible fighter with an intense knowledge of the world of MMA, kinda like the payton manning of UFC. Its very obvious that Frank Mir can win this fight.

With that said im going to have to go with the momentum of Shane Carwin, as long as he isnt put on his back by Mir.

All and all I think this is gunna be one of the best fights in 2010
