Matt Serra vs BJ Penn at 170?

Who do you think would win. Serra stated it would be to hard to go to 155' date=' and before fighting GSP, BJ needs to beat a welterweight...

I will give this to Serra he has the hands and the ground game, it would be close but Serra is my fav so I would be rooting for him.[/quote']

They already fought in the UFC a long time ago. Penn won a decision in that fight and I think he would win again but it would be exciting. I think it would definately be a stand-up fight and there would probably be a finish.

I know they fought before! I think Serra and BJ have improved their hands, but I think Serra has the heavier hands, I don't think its a good idea for him to exchange regardless of BJ's great stand up.

Serra has heavier hands but Penn has the heavier skull so they cancel each other out.

As much as I am a Matt Serra fan, Trigg made him look better than he is right now. He should have to fight tougher opponents before he gets a shot at Penn at any weight.

Well Serra beat GSP, i think he beat Hughes, and he just knocked out Trigg, so i think he deserves BJ at 170.

I dont think penn is that overrated..

He sure is. He is all talk. He is a great 155, BUT the LW division sucks. Weakest in the UFC by far.

At 170 Bj is no threat. Not even a top 5 WW. He would get mauled by any top 5 WW. The WW division is stacked! Huge monsters! Penn would be smart to keep away. Look what happened last time he tried to fight GSP.

I dont think its the weakest division..If i was to pick a division that needs more fighters i would say maybe the HW or MW..

I agree that MW is lacking too. HW has some good talent though.

Anyway. Bj is the best 155. That does not mean he can compete in the heavy stacked WW division. I mean its no secret that WW and LHW are the 2 big boys in the UFC.

Bj does not have what it takes to win against the monster WW's weighing 210 in the octagon. In GSP's last fight with Thiago Alves, Alves weighed 208! Source Joe Rogan.

AJ cut from 220 in his last fight. Its just a huge difference between that and fighting little tiny guys like Kenfo, Diego and Edgar who could really fight at 145. So yes, Bj is the biggest LW. We all know he does not match up with bigger fighters as his frame is very small.

What? Are you TRYING to lose credibility? 155 is the weakest by FAR?

By FAR? First off...saying it's the weakest is just blatantly ignorant. And saying it's the weakest by FAR is either ridiculous bias or just plain trolling.

265 is historically the weakest division in the sport. Always has been...it's getting better by leaps and bounds...but still it's the weakest talent wise.

155 however has always been strong. Because at 155 you can't rely on sheer size like you can at 265. It truly comes down to skill.

Anyone that says that Penn isn't one of the greatest fighters in the world doesn't know what they are talking about. Skill for skill..Penn may be the BEST fighter in the world.

Anderson Silva could beat a larger percentage of the world because he'd be more competitive with the bigger guys...but Penn...is just insanely skilled.

At 170 I think Penn is probably easily in the top 10 and possibly top 5. We don't know in this era of the sport because he hasn't competed against the top WW's in this era. Much like Fedor...we don't know how good Fedor is against the top HW's of today.

It's possible that both would be highly competitive against the elites, just maybe not the top dog.

Cheers

WoW.. Are you related to Serra because I NEVER thought i'd hear someone say that. And i think BJ would literally pick him apart on the feet and could very well sub him on the ground

i think BJ should have to beat a WW wrestler before he gets another crack at GSP...

^^This makes a lot of sense

Serra would beat BJ now!

BJ has turned into a flat footed striker' date=',,,,very little kicks and for some reason has abondoned most of his ground game.[/quote']

^^How is having 3 of your last 5 wins via Submission considered abandoning??? His other two wins came via TKO, not a flat footed striker whatsoever

^^ This is an accurate assessment. I think only GSP, Silva and Fedor could be ranked ahead of this guy on the P4P list and i don't really like Penn but his skills are undeniable. BJ Submission mid-round 2

Okay... It is highly unlikely that BJ would win by submission as Matt's BJJ is superior to Penns.

It would be a great fight. First BJ fight that I acutally would be intrested in watching. His fights have been very predictable. It would be nice to watch one where you didn't know the outcome before it started.

Why do people feel the need to bring GSP into every BJ thread...

I just stated that the only three i could SEE ahead of him P4P could be GSP, Fedor and Anderson and was giving props to BJ for being one of the best of all time P4P.

Serra has only submitted one opponent in his career, i know he's a Black Belt but so is BJ who's submitted 3 in his last 6 fights. So i don't see how you can say that Matt's BJJ is better when discussing MMA BJJ

Well Serra has won several world jiu jitsu tourneys not just one or 2 like BJ.

But as i always say, pure jiu jitsu is different then mma jits.

wow, some of these things being said make no sence. Hughes BJJ better then Penn, Serra has improved alot since they last fought, Penn would get knocked out, etc. Penn has wayyyyyy better BJJ than Hughes (no offence Hughes is one of my favorites), Serra improved ? maybe so but look at BJ, the guy would rip Serra apart, with the farthest thing being a KO victory for Serra.

No disrespect to Serra, i like him a lot. That being said i like him mostly because of his personality and upset over GSP, and not his fighting.

BJ Penns stand up is far the superior Penn would jab him to death

Penn's jab is probably one the best in the UFC

his jab would stop Serra's swinging hooks Serra has little else in the stand up department

and on the ground if u were to ask BJJ guys (who compete in BJJ tournaments) who they would rather compete against Penn or Serra they would probably say Serra

Serra's BJJ is superior oh please do u know wot ur talking about

Penn got his nick name the prodigy b4 he came into MMA when he was competeing in BJJ tournaments

Serra is very good BJJ black belt but to say 1 is superior to the other in this is just stupid

it would be a brillant ground fight if it happened that way

No way. You guys overrate Bj so much. He will get smashed at 170 by any top 5. Serra would stop Bj fast and might have better BJJ.
