CLEVERFAN
I think training makes you tougher. But MMA might give you a stronger mind set going into the fight. He was probably a pansy and you were just better through life experiences. If you train and play with people who just watch, you will laugh the entire time rolling around. You will see holes, and absolute NO NOs on the ground. I suggest you go and train before believing that watching MMA makes you a better fighter. Better to not learn the hard way. Bubba_Pilks
I wouldn't say it makes you tougher, but you defiinetly could become a little bit better of a fighter. When i started watching MMA consistently i didn't know how to do a triangle, arm triangle, armbar, d'arce choke. Now if given the opportunity i may be able to sink one in, in a fight, obviously i don't quite understand the transitions to these positions because i don't study jits, but it could happen. The chances are moreso now then before.

Ares9139
From watching MMA I learnt things such as the basic fighting stances, the importance of keeping your hands up and chin tucked etc. I had a basic idea of a few combos and such so I'd say from that it made me more clued up on what to do in a fighting situation but I wouldn't say it made me tougher. Face_Kick1406052405
I think depending on how you watch mma it could make you tougher. If you analyze how a fight goes down rather than just yell (look at all the blood!) and you look at how and why the fight went down than i think it absolutely makes you more ready for a fight. It also makes fighting seem normal if you watch it enough and not scary. (fighting scares most people) ps:i learned how to set up a kimura, an arm bar, and full mount purely from undisputed 2009 and used them on friends that were screwing around with me
1fan4fun
I blame video games and violence on television. People don't make decisions for themselves. They just do what they are told by ethereal mystical forces. If you've ever seen the First Blood than you know what I'm talking about. Folks emulate what they see. They are incapable of restraint and personal choice. If I had nickel for how many times I've had to break a man's neck like they do in the movies I'd be nickel shy of a nickel. If you're having trouble with my logic, that's fine, see Rambo II.

It won't do anything against people who train, but against tough-guy d-bags, it could definitely help. People who have a high interest in this sport, and watch it for more than the blood and brutality, will do better than the average Joe. The best thing to learn is a variety of chokes, as most guys in a bar fight, will try to tackle you and take you down. Most of them are dumb and leave their neck exposed. As for the armbar i should have mentioned ive been doing BJJ for 2 years.[/quote'] Yep, I started training at 17 and im 23 now I have been in lots of fights with marines, drunks, frat boys, wrestlers, and just straight up brawlers. Im assuming your kinda young, i could be wrong but I will tell you that no one wins in a street fight. Someone gets hurt even if you win the fight. Legal issues, peoples view of you, alot of things come from a fight so i will tell you to run. But I dont ever do the smartest things. I never follow my own advice no matter how good it is, but ... If you have no choice and it will stay a 1 on 1 fight throw a quick guillotine or thai clinch with lots of knees fast. If you are planning on taking them down you should just try to get them to back pedal. When they do shove them. With the momentum of his body and your shove he is probably hitting the dirt. One of the best things I learned from all the different styles I have trained is closing the distance on your opponent. If you can control the distance between you and your opponent it is all up to executing your attack successfully. Its footwork and reaction time. Its one of the reasons Anderson is who he is. But training is the real way to get good. When you train enough you wont get tunnel vision and fight or flight really doesnt exist.

You can learn general things from watching MMA like stance, footwork, etc. but when it comes down to it, a fan that doesn't train doesn't know how to apply a proper arm bar or a choke the right way. I have a freind who occasionally comes to the gym with me, but doesn't train. ChrisCrowing
While I think the example cited may be a slight untruth, I do believe that being into MMA may make you a more formidable fighter than someone who is into (for example) pro wrestling as a spectator sport. My reasoning being, as sports fans we begin to appreciate the tactics, moves etc. which bring success in that sport - it just so happens that such observational training (if you will...) translates directly to real fighting. Basically, someone who listens to MMA commentary and studies it in the manner of a fan of a sport will KNOW that incisive striking beats your usual bar fight wild haymaker etc. HOWEVER, its a very marginal thing - and anyone who attempts an ARMBAR in a bar fight is a freaking idiot. I would say that I am a better fighter since getting into MMA, but I'm trained in karate, and I've also played rugby for several years - the improvement in my personal 'real' fighting comes from an new understanding of alternative moves - for example, I had NEVER considered the elbow as a weapon until I saw it used to awesome effect by BJ Penn on Joe Stevenson. That said, your average thick-necked, beer gutted fan who wears fight shirts all the time, and says things like 'I'm a cage fighter, I'll tap you the f'ck out to people in bars,' is likley to still be the same lumberingm, arrogant tool he always was... The moral of my little ramble - if you THINK about fighting and have a certain precense of mind - you'll be a better fighter than you would if you didn;t. I really wouldn't put getting a lucky know-down in a bar fight down to being an MMA fan - it's more the beer giving you increased confidence and getting a lucky shot in... SwiftSpear
Taking 2 guys with zero training, I'll pick the guy who watches MMA over the guy who watches Football, even if he's somewhat smaller. You can learn some stuff just from watching, basic things like positional defense (get into guard and what not), certain chokes come pretty naturally when you actually get your arm around the guy's neck, if you know what you're looking for. You can learn to not expect the guy to fly back 10 feet when you land a jab like they do in Holywood movies. You can learn that a body punch probably won't end the fight no matter how much power you put into it. Watching MMA isn't anywhere near real fight training, but I think there are some real world advantages to it. That being said, MMA is so popular these days, chances are the other guy in the bar fight probably watches it too.

UndisputedKing
Street fights ARE NOT MMA! The worst thing in a street fight is to end up on the ground in my opinion, because theres NO RULES! Personally im not that good on the ground. If im on the ground and i feel im in trouble, i'll bite and take what ever i bite with me before i let you get me in a sub or choke. If i gotta smash your throat in i will. People tend to resort to crazy things when on the ground in a bad position. As were when standing and throwing down, you dont have to worry about that near as much. And people dont tend to get involved as much in stand up brawls, as were people tend to throw kicks to guys on the ground.

Lol it's my favourite submission when I'm rolling around with bigger guys. And I'd have to disagree. I think the Kimura is one of the hardest moves to sink in because the opponent resists so much seeing as it's their... arm. Also, the armbar takes too long in order to create a break. If you're outnumbered, you get kicked in the face while trying to roll into it.

bmac121
No watching tv won't make you tougher, if anything watching a MMA fight in a public place, such as a bar or something will just get people's adrenaline up and get someone into trouble who gets a macho attitude going because they are all pumped up and think they can fight like the guys they just watched on tv and end up getting into a fight and beat up. It happens pretty much every time me and my friends go to hooters to watch the ufc fights. You get some liquored up guy who is all excited from watching the fights who thinks they are brock lesnar or something and causes a scene or tries to duke it out with someone.
