Ares9139
http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2010/02/10/exclusive-mark-coleman-cut-from-the-ufc/ It looks like it?s the end of the road between Mark Coleman and the UFC, as FiveOuncesofPain.com has recently been able to confirm through sources close to the situation that the UFC Hall of Famer has been released from the promotion following the recent defeat at the hands of fellow MMA legend, Randy Couture. Couture controlled the action for the bulk of the headlining match-up between the pair that took place during UFC 109 before sinking in a rear-naked choke to finish the bout ? and effectively Mark Coleman?s career with the UFC ? in the second round. Affectionately referred to as ?The Godfather of Ground and Pound? for good reason, Coleman first exploded onto the UFC scene back in 1996 when the former NCAA champion wrestler completely decimated three opponents (including Gary Goodridge and Don Frye) to be crowned the UFC 10 Tournament Champion, and completely changed the way many approached the game in the process. ?The Hammer? utilized his trademark ground and pound to become the UFC?s first ever heavyweight champion before going overseas to capture the illustrious PRIDE 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix Tournament Championship. In 2009 Coleman made his long awaited return to the UFC where he suffered a loss in his first bout with Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua (a bout that earned Mark ?FOTN? honors) before shocking many at UFC 100 with a dominant decision victory over the much younger Stephan Bonnar. guti
its about time ... He showed that he can not compete at this level anymore.. Unlike randy , coleman is done for MMA.. Great fighter in his prime but not anymore.. I want to see randy against some tougher opponents but I think he still have what it takes to compete at this level ...Maybe not to be a champion but top 10 at least

Yerbo
He clearly didn't train for the fight nearly as much as he could have. He looked tired after the 1st minute and had a terrible game plan. I'd cut him for those 2 reasons alone.

There comes a time when you need to think about your legacy and how you want people to remember you, In Colemans case it will either be his past performances in UFC 10 and the Pride open weight grand prix or his later years where he was gassed before he even hit the second round against Couture. Liddell is heading the same way and Couture is done after this little "run". On a sidenote, If they are gonna cut Coleman then why the hell is Bonnar still around and looking to stay around even if he loses at 110?! Gotta love the UFC huh? lol

Ares9139
After Coleman's last performance I'm not suprised, he really hasn't aged as well as Couture and he looked like a fighter that needed to retire. I'd agree his win over Bonnar was impressive, but after Couture, he just looked old and done. There's little left for him to achieve by continuing to compete, I think it's best that he retires now before he ends up like a Ken Shamrock. I think he can retire now and still have his pride maintained, as well as his credibility.

The UFC trades on good fights, Coleman can't deliver that because he is too old and past it. If you couldn't do your job, you'd get binned too. It's the way of the world. Lets face it, Randy is not top of the ladder anymore and he made Coleman look like my Grandaddy. The UFC were right, even from Colemans point of view, he could have gotten badly hurt...comebacks in the later years of your life when you're in combat sports? Ive got two words for anyone who doesn't agree... Muhammed Ali....and I am in no way, a 'new' fan.

Exodus9mm
Coleman's performance was one of the most embarassing things I've witnessed in MMA in some time.....Forrest Griffin crying and Machida beating Shogun rounding out the top 3....Rolles Gracie makes a huge claim to this honour though...haha The man clearly needs to hang em up. His frame is vintage ex-steroider - I thought he might die in there.......pack it up Hammer, your best days are far behind you.
Sick00
Coleman, like alot of the pioneers of the sport just missed out on the benefits being reaped now by the current fighters. I think that Dana knew this would be Coleman's last fight and he was just giving him a main event in front of a huge audience.

seXXXpac
It's sad when things like this happen, but that is the nature of things. The whole "just let him win one more.. go out on a high note" dealio, can be said for any fighter. Chuck Liddell comes to mind. You could let him try to win "one more", but what if he gets brutally knocked out again? Do you give him yet another chance? Or, what if he wins? Then it becomes "he's still got it!!", and then he should fight again. Right? The time to hang 'em up will eventually come for everybody. There's no avoiding it. I would have liked to watch him bash Tito's face in, but what if Tito beat him bad? Coleman is a legend. Nobody can take away the things he has accomplished. But it is sad to see him go down like this. Maybe he just over-trained and peaked at the wrong time.. who knows?
Gamer_Ely
yikes, why all the Bonnar hate? he's like one of the most durable fighters I've ever seen. He really hasn't earned the hate you're throwing at him, he's lost like 5 fights, twice to Griffin, to Evans, Bones, and Coleman..... Two of those were Lhw champs, bones is everybody's new messiah, and Coleman.... has some power when he uses it. He's never been knocked out, he's beaten Jardine, something Griffin didn't do... so yeah... fun days, be happy

Denominator
I think that if anyone saw Coleman from when he was in his prime, they'd see a completely different fighter then what he is now, and he definitely hasn't gotten better. I saw this guy pick up a 200+lbs. opponent with one arm, off the freaking floor and slam the guy. He was a true monster in his time, which has honestly passed. Not that he couldn't beat the lower level kids coming in, but he's nowhere near the level he use to be. In his prime, i'd say he would definitely have given Brock Lesnar a run for his money. gary68
Mark has tried his best, but has lost a little bit to much.He really looked his age vs Randy.I mean it looked as though he was going to get really hurt.To see a fighter in desperation not even go to what he knows and does best, really shows me that he is done.If he would have at least tried a shot or 2 it would have at least looked as though he was trying to stay in the fight. It was like he was lost out there.Man,if his gameplan was to stand with Randy, that would have been crazy.I am a HUGE Tomkins fan, but its hard to believe that shawn would think in 3 months he could raise the Hammers skill level to that of Randy's,Mark has given us many great fights, and was a real pioneer of the sport.I really hope he hangs up his gloves and stay in the game in another way.Either as a coach, trainer,or just an anouncer. Thanks for the memories Hammer !!!!
