UFC Research Paper - What you like about the UFC

Hey All,

I'm writing a research paper for school about the UFC and what were the causes behind its boom in popularity. At this point, I am focusing on what it is about the UFC that makes people watch it week after week? Basically I want to know why you are a UFC fan, or just an MMA fan in general? Which aspects of Mixed Martial Arts are most interesting to you all?

Also, If anyone has suggestions for places to look for more research, that would be appreciated.

For example: It still makes me smile to think about Hendo's KO of Bisbing last year, one of the reasons I watch UFC is because you never know where that next big KO is coming from.

The UFC does a great job of building fights up. For me what really has an impact is how we get to know the fighters through TUF or the countdown shows. I was a big fan of GSP ever since I first saw him fight Matt Hughes. Then they had the UFC Primetime show to get into the lives of both GSP and Penn before the big UFC 94 fight. If you didn't get a chance to watch it it's on youtube broken up into 6 parts. It was a 3 part installment and you really got to see how they train, their families, and what they had to say about their own dominance and their thoughts on the fight. I really enjoyed this and I'm excited that they are bringing it back.

The countdown shows are similar but not as far in depth.

I would also love to have them do it more often, for each champion or beloved fighter. But again the UFC helps you get to know the fighters and become more invested in how they do.

They also listen to what the fans have to say. They really care about their fans especially Dana. No matter what people think about him he does a great job. He is always giving out free tickets and supporting the troops. The UFC announced a Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson 2 fight and the fans were not that excited about that. I'm not sure where he read the fans reactions but I would guess from the forums. The UFC then decided to change that fight and put Rich Franklin in against Vitor Belfort and I know I personally was much more excited about this fight.

Another example of that is when the fans voted to give Anderson Silva his title shot. He came in and destroyed his first opponent in Chris Leben and everybody wanted to see him fight Rich Franklin for the title as the MW division was becoming stagnant.

These are recent examples. Another thing that has made the UFC grow so much is their desire to expand. They are always looking to drop what Dana calls an "MMA Bomb" in other countries. They bring a show there and MMA takes off in that country and MMA in general benefits as we get more fighters from around the world training in a new sport. When dana goes to a new country he makes sure he brings what the fans want to see.

They are going to Australia later this month and they are bringing an awesome card. Dana keeps fighters around even if they are on a losing streak if they go out and give a good fight. He has always said that he doesn't care if you win or lose if you come to fight and put on a good show, you will have a spot in the UFC. Wanderlei Silva is an example of this. He puts on some of the greatest fights I have ever seen and Dana knows this. He put him on the card for Australia because he knows he will come to fight and get the crowd pumped up. They also tried to put australians on the card for obvious reasons. They just do a great job of coming up with exciting fights to help that "bomb" explode.

Abu Dabi is going to be receiving one of the greatest cards ever put together with 2 title fights and 2 of the best p4p fighters in the sport.

The UFC has a great future. I see them being broadcast all around the world with the best fighters from every country.

Good luck on the paper it's a great topic.

Well put Technique. UFC has got to be the purest sport. Really there is no equipment (gloves & cup). Almost no hold barred hand to hand combat. Someone can be dominating a fight and then in a heart beat make a mistake and get knocked out. Also, the training involved is amazing. These guys are incredible athletes. I think MMA has a tremendous future.

its a college paper Biohazard... I never thought I would be excited about writing a 10 page research paper' date=' but my teacher was pretty open about topics.. She just wanted some thing that had experienced a massive growth in popularity in a short time... I felt like the UFC fit this description perfectly[/quote']

I see. I'd be pretty excited too, maybe even get it in early. There was this book that came out in 2008 called Total MMA. This is what the cover looks like.

I am supremely confident that you would find it to be a great help. It is the entire history of MMA, even everything that happened pre-1993. It has literally everything in it.

"If the History of MMA was a college class, this would be the textbook" Quote from the back cover.

Hope you get a good grade. If you write about something you like, it is likely.

my favorite thing about UFC is watching a good groin shot.

Good luck with the paper, it does help to have a passion for your subject!

The explosion of MMA into almost mainstream is no doubt down to TUF for the most part. Forrest Bonnar 1 was a big moment.

For me I started watching UFC when I found it on UK tv and my wife said I would like it (she started watching it around 1995 at University with her Jiu jitsu black belt landlord!).

from the first time I watched it I wanted to see more, I loved the big KO's and submissions.

These days I still find it as exciting but my view has changed somewhat, I still love the KO's but I now also like a good technical 3 or 5 rounder, not just brawls.

I like that it has evolved from a legendary jiu jitsu practioner taking down brawlers twice his size on technique alone, to former Olympians, to world class strikers, to black belts in respective grappling disciplines... I love having watched the guys going from fighting for peanuts to 6 figure paydays. It's growth is simply amazing! You've gotta love seeing evolution! As opposed to football/baseball/basketball that were clearly popular before my birth, to get to watch the evolution and growth of MMA right before my own eyes, just awesome!!!

I like MMA because it is the greatest form of proving yourself. Its like animals in the wild the only way they prove themself is fighting to see who is the strongest. I mean if it really came down to it and there wasnt law it would be MMA fighters who rule/

Im not that big of a fan of ground fights and wrestling, unless its two guys who are really good and know how to throw up some submissions thats alright, I just dont like ground and pound I find its kind of cheap and boring.

Love the stand up wars and of course the number one reason I like MMA.... KNOCKOUTS!

I've always been a combat sports kinda guy, but really found boxing (the only one that got wide exposure) could be very boring and featured a lot of mis-matched fights.

I enoy MMA and UFC as 90% of the fights are quite action packed. Be it a stand up war, good grappling and BJJ usually always something happening.

The current UFC is IMO the best promotion because you rarely see a hugly mismatched fight on a card. You sometimes get one sided results, but for the most part the records and skill levels of the fighters match up.

I have enjoyed seeing the evolution from the early days of no hold barred, no weight class tourneys to the true sport we have today.

What's crazy to me about the sport is, take BJ Penn for example, He's one the the best in the world, At LW he can't be touched. So, who is going to be the guy to dethrone him? Who is that one guy that's going to come along and be so damn good that he is bale to take out someone like BJ Penn. That's exciting to me. To know that guys just keep getting better and better. Like how we went form Tito Ortiz, to Chuck Liddell, and now to Machida. The way the sport evolves and the anticipation of the next big guy is so intrugueing to me.

And the styles too. I love how all these' new style and "Masters" of each respected style are coming up or already at the top. Shogun, and his Muay Thai, Machida and his Karate, GSP and his wrestling, BJ and A. Silva and their excellent striking. It's f****** amazing lol that's the best way to put it.

-buy the ticket. take the ride.

It was a natural progression for me. I watched boxing for years two guys step in the ring throw punches with precision block and bob and weave. I used to love boxing but when boxing fell to crap i was introduced to MMA which is all the things i loved about boxing rolled up with the amazing skills takedowns and submissions. Not gonna ramble on here but i was very glad to find MMA after all the talent in boxing got too old and the new guys just swing for the fences.

Why do I love MMA? Instead of watching a 3 hour long football game where it can become very obvious who will win in the first quarter, and yet people still sit through the full three hours, fights are 15 minutes long and anyone can win at any moment. Sylvia vs. Nogueira is a perfect example. Nogueira was getting slapped around the whole fight, but in the third round Nogueira slaps a submission on him. That was epic.

Also, MMA, I feel, is the purest form of competition. They don't wear full body armor like ***** football or hockey players. Here: this is for your balls, this is for your teeth, and this tape will turn your fist into concrete. The rules aren't there to turn the fight into a "game" the rules are there so the fighters have a good chance of fighting again. Pure, unaltered, competition.

Let's not forget, anyone with the dedication and determination can fight. Not all these fighters are notorious athletes. Most of them are normal dudes who just want to fight. Its the "everyman's" sport.
