Underdog's Life

Whatever happened to supporting the underdog?

There's been so many threads recently bashing the underdog in upcoming and past fights, the outlook is puzzling to me. Mocking people Al Turk, Anthony Perosh and of course Dan Hardy. So many gleeful, boasting posters endlessly foretelling how GSP will destroy Hardy. If these people are big GSP fans.... fine, I get it. Neutral fans though.... you're supposed to back the underdog aren't you?? Did everyone watch Rocky in the hope that Apollo or Drago would win?

Backing the favourite unless you have money on them shows very little class or imagination. GSP is supposed to win... It's like going to a casino and cheering for the dealer. "Yeah *****, my dealer busted your ****!"

Excuse the rant.

I think the majority often think very differently about a situation when the underdog isn't an American.

Furthermore, I heard a great analogy regarding Dan Hardy and GSP the other day on this forum. I can't remember who it was that said supporting GSP in this fight is like travelling all the way to Vegas, going to a casino and then cheering for the dealer.

I always cheer for the underdog unless the favourite happens to be one of my favourite fighters.

I think the problem is that a lot of us feel these "underdog's" aren't truly worthy of the fights they are being put in. An underdog is someone who fights against the odd's and succeeds. These guys are nobodies or close to it ( for most people who watch ) and they are being thrown in with beloved hero's. They didn't fight tough fights just to get to the top. They didn't wow us with their ferocity or skill. They just beat a couple of people who really weren't at all close to the skill level of their opponent ( for the most part ).

I agree with your point, but what would you suggest that the UFC does in this situation. There's nothing else that the UFC can do in this situation.

Who in the WW division is more worthy of a shot than Hardy who hasn't been beaten up by GSP already?

Who else was a more sensible match up for Cro Cop who was just coming off two bitterly disappointing losses than Mostapha Al Turk?

Who else could the UFC get to face Cro Cop on such short notice other than Anthony Perosh? It was either him, or there was no fight. There was never a chance that an existing UFC fighter of Cro Cop's standard was gonna stand up and say "Yeah, I'll fly around the world and fight a dangerous opponent on 2 days notice".

I completely agree. If people don't think fighters are worthy, realise that it's not the fighters that arranged the fight, it's the UFC. Have some human empathy! These guys are going to get locked in a cage with people that they aren't (on paper) as good as. How courageous. Support them.

I support fighters who get locked in a cage with people better than them and WIN to get a title shot. That's how underdog's are supposed to work. They win a big one shockingly then win the title in a shocking manner as well.

I don't dislike Perosh or any of the fighters I just won't cheer for people who I consider to be undeserving of being in the ring with legends. I want them to lose just so to show just how unworthy they are. I'm ALL about cheering for a kid who really shouldn't win but has that miracle factor going for him. These guys just aren't it.

I think this is a great thread. I don't understand why people bash the fighters in general. You can say you think one guy is going to win based on better skills or opponents faced, but there's no need to be disrespectful about it.

I personally always root for GSP because I've watched him rise and had that excitement of an underdog against Hughes and now I just want to see him write his legacy.

I agree I'm rarely disrespectful and if I am I'm only joking around and it's pretty obvious. I personally don't think Hardy has what it takes to put GSP down. When I say that Hardy fan boy's come screaming out of from wherever they are hiding to scream insensibly about how American's are ****s and how GSP is this..and you get the point.

Amen haha

I think people just always want to be right..usually if anyone shows hopes of an underdog winning, people in these forums jump on them and call them trolls or noobs or idiots hah

I cheer for the fighter I like better if they are the favorite or underdog makes no difference to me. I will ALWAYs cheer for Chuck,GSP and Wanderlei.

I have various reasons for liking a fighter be it style or history or even outside the ring conduct, but I don't ever bash a fighter I'm not cheering for and don't hate any fighter, They are due to much respect for what they do for a living to hate them.

Even though I am pulling for GSP, I really like Dan. He is a good fighter for sure and pretty damn entertaining with his interviews. I'd be pullin for him in any other fight.

Backing the underdog is a good theory, unless you cant stand him.

Personally, I just go with my gut instinct on who I like more, and am not ashamed, sometime a fighters nationality does come into it.

I will never boo or dislike a fighter based on where they come from, but have nothing but love for 99% of fighters out of Britain, heck I even cheer for Cheick!
