How low can humans go?

Recommended Posts

So I have a pretty sick (as in bad) story for you guys. I'm 19, live with my mother (recently divorced) and play poker for all means of income. Before April I was down to about a $500 bankroll (money specifically for playing poker). I had started with $5,000 which was all profit and had gone on a horrible run of luck where I couldn't win anything...So from September of 09 to April of 10 I had lost about $3,500 (I had spent about $1,000 on miscellaneous expenditures).

April comes along and I win four tournaments at my local casino for about $900 a piece. I also went on a pretty good run online and was up about $1,500. To top it all off, I won an online tournament April 30th for $6,500 (my best career cash). So all in all it was a fantastic month. I had won about $11,000 and had money to treat my mom to some good meals, pay for a golf membership, and take some bigger poker risks.

Next few months go alright. Won $1,400 in may and lost a few hundred in June. Essentially I was still sitting on a good chunk and things were going well. So tonight comes along and I get a phone call on our landline. I was playing poker and got up to get it just in case it was important. When I picked up the phone (corded, right by our basement door which leads to the back yard) I saw something that sunk my stomach. The door had been smashed in...I immediately hung up the phone and my mind began to race. I instantly thougth "Oh my God, I have to check my safe." I run upstairs open my door, bend over, and bang...My safe which was located under my bed was gone.

You guys can only imagine what kind of emotions I was feeling. Anger, rage, sadness, bitterness, etc...Basically too many emotions to keep track of. I immediately tried calling my mother, but she was in a meeting. Then I called my older brother and we thought things through a bit, but he was getting on my nerves cause he was accusing my best friend (since middle school) of doing it. So after we hung up, I called the police, an officer arrived and shorty after an investigator. They examined my house and asked me all sorts of questions regarding all aspects of the crime.

All in all it was a pretty bad night for me. For those wondering, I had $5,500 cash and hundreds of my best football cards from 10+ years of collecting. I live in an extremely safe town and in a good neighborhood free of most criminal activity. All accesses to our house are always locked, and only accessible through forced entry. I gave the police a list of possible suspects and people who knew that I had a safe and money. Obviously the person (s) who did this know who I am and probably have known me for a long time. So I end this tension relieving thread by begging the question:

How low will humans go?

Btw, I know keeping that much money at your residence isn't very smart, but I already have money in the bank and the money at my house was for poker and miscellaneous spending. And really, you never think this kind of stuff can happen till it does.

Thanks for reading.

I felt sad when i was reading this dude.

Just let the police deal with it and hopefully they will find your guy and you will get your cash back, along with the cards. Then, I don't know what type of guy you are like if revenge is your thing, you show up at your former friends house and beat their punk theiving asses.

I'm sorry about the incident bro, That makes it worse that it was one of your friends, With any luck your will get everything back and they will be sent to jail. Well keep me updated on if you get your stuff back dude.

Thanks buddy. Even with our MMA differences you still care about things on a human level. Hopefully whoever did it gets what they deserve. Until then I will always feel this deep sickness in my stomach.

Yeah I'm not jerk like Hangitup. But I'm sure your belongings will be returned, esspecially if the police have suspects of who might've done it.

Just out of curiosity...How many friends of yours knew you had that there?

You don't have to answer if you don't wish to.

Only a few. I told them I was 99% certain that it was a specific person I have been playing poker with for quite a while. If it's not the person I have in mind then i'm dumbfounded. I'll keep everyone posted.

That sucks...

Any idea who did it?

Well a guy I met about a year ago playing poker befriended me a few months ago. I was for sure he was a good person, but people kept telling me he was a con-artist, but I didn't believe it. He also has a criminal record for forgery/embezzlement and armed robbery. If it was him he put on the most evil act of deception ever conceived.

serves u right for telling ppl you got a safe under your bed.

The only person who knew where it was was my best friend since middle school. And it wasn't him. You wouldn't have that attitude if it happened to you.

Just a note..... Some spray engine degreasers have been known to send people blind, with the added bonus that if they close their eyes by some chance, you can flick a match on them.... its real hard to fight back when you cant see, or are on fire.

You could always get a fathead done of Aunt Ester and illuminate it with some soft light. Whoever opens your door will head for the hills.

So basically you had a small safe that you had under your bed, that I am assuming wasn't bolted to the floor right? If you did you might as well have been keeping your money in your sock drawer. Most small safes if you open them you will find bolt holes going through into the actual safe itself. People really should use them a safe only offers protection if someone can't actually steal the safe...

An alarm system isn't going to be the end-all be-all. It takes less than a minute to kick in a door, run to a bedroom and grab a safe. When the alarm goes off, the signal has to reach the alarm company, then the alarm company calls the local police. By the time the alarm is dispatched to an officer and the officer arrives (include several minutes for drive time), the burglar is long gone.

Never tell anyone where you keep money or that you have money. Even if the one person you tell wouldn't do something like that, they might tell a cousin that tells a friend, that tells another friend, etc., etc.

Sucks to hear bro. I would be pissed off too. Unfortunately your money probably won't get back to you unless you find it yourself. The police will probably sit on their **** and not care...its the sad world we live in.

They only took the safe? nothing else in the house was taken?

Just about to ask the exact thing, if that's all they took, then they came for that specifically, and therefore it was someone who knew it was there(one of your friends). Sucks to hear that man, hope the person can be found and at least the cards returned. They're going to be worth a lot sometime in the future.

thats sux hope you get your cards back... from my experince with people most of them have pretty big mouths so tell even you friends about your safe is not the best idea as you already found out.... Just wondering what kinda safe was it??

Just the safe. It was a direct mission. They bypassed a new computer, Xbox 360, new Bose music player, new 42 inch flat-screen TV, dvd player, I-pod, basically everything. Whoever it was knows me. And i'm 99% sure I know who it was and I let the investigator know everything about it. That's why I wasn't scared of keeping my money in a safe like that, cause it would have to be someone I knew. I thought treating everyone nicely, compassionately, and with respect was enough to dissuade human greed, but clearly I was wrong.
