Is there any way to see if you have a good chin besides getting punched i always wondered if i did but today i had to spar this 200 pound guy (im only 145 and im 16)and i found out i have a good chin even know everytime he hit me it felt like i was getting smacked by a hammer

But im wondering if there is another way?

X-ray I suppose. I kind of agree with Doc but having a thick jaw or big jaw doesn't necessarily mean you can take a heavy blow and be fine.

I think it plays some part there's alot of other factors as well. Generally sharp angles are not good to have. For evidence of this look at people like Mark Hunt, Cabbage, BJ Penn, Wanderlei etc. etc.

Lets say a blow lands on someone with a sharp pointy angular jaw. If it lands on a certain point the impact is much greater over this smaller surface. However if it lands on a more rounded jaw the impact point is spread out over a larger area.

This isn't the case always but just my own little theory. Some people just have it some don't regardless of structure.

As mentioned a strong neck can also help absorb some of the whiplash effect that scrambles the brain but still doesn't always necessarily mean that person can take a heavy shot.

I've knocked out too many meatheads to prove that theory wrong.

this doesnt mean you have a good chin, depends where he hit you, with what force he hit you etc

Who knows what they do to mouthpieces so fighters don't have as many concussions?

By the way' date=' it seems to be a myth: http://dentistry.about.com/od/issuesandemergencies/f/concussion.htm[/quote']

Interesting. Ive never really heard mouth pieces claming to prevent concussion. It just protects your teeth from going through your lip and somewhat from teeth getting knocked out.

My understanding of KO's is your brain is surrounded by fluid and a high velosity impact makes your brain slam into your skull. If it hits hard enough and your brain can't asbsorb the impact it's lights out.

How the f*uck would a mouthpiece prevent that?

well i play hockey and we were mouthguard's to prevent concussions. If you fall and hit your jaw off the ground the mouthguard prevents the jaw from hitting your upper jaw, and if your not the impact could if hard enough send a shock through your jaw resulting in a cuncuion.

Don't know if this makes sense to anyone, or if it would have the same principles in mma, im not very good at explaning things.

Same thing could be said for biting down hard though with no mouthpiece at all. I really don't think it acts as any kind of shock absorber but Im can't say for sure.

well a mouthpiece will absorb some of the shock sent into the top teeth from the bottom teeth

distribution of force over a larger area is a big deal when preventing injury

Big heads are good for the same reason big hands are good, they are heavier so their momentum/inertia is greater.

Big heads means you brain acellerates slower than it would otherwise.

I think mouth gaurds would stop a few concussions as say a upper cut land on your jaw. the shock can travel from Jaw to tooth to tooth to skull, That is all hard tissue.

or Jaw to tooth to mouthguard to tooth to skull which incluldes a impact reducing plastic. Even just a liltte bit of shock absorption would help if the impact is on the jaw.

There is some discussion about having your mouth clamped around a mouthguard would actually help even of the blow was to say your temple or any part of the face which covers your skull (ie not your jaw). I don't know enough for an opinion on that.

Rounded jaws are a older human trait (no I am not calling them cave men) from a time when humans needed to be tougher and so the round jaw is more an indicator to a heavier bone structure.

Also a rounded jaw is harder to catch cleanly with a glancing strike.

taken from 2belows thread sick of getting ko'd

It's no medical secret that when you get popped on "the button" the light bulb in your head is going to flicker and burn out for a few seconds up to a minute or so.

So let me ask you this:

1. Do you hate looking like Rashad after the Machida fight?

2. Are you sick of getting knocked out when someone catches and counters your body/leg kick?

3. You definitely don't want to be looking like Keith Jardine after the Ryan Bader bout, right?

Well, as we all know, MMA's lifelong question has been, and will always be, how do I get a stronger chin? For the men listed above it is too late, but for you it could be just in time. I was at the Lion's den and Roy Nelson came up to me and said:

"Dude, your chin is looking mean, what's your secret?"

And this is when I unveiled the great truth. I pulled out a pack of Bazooka Joe gum from my waistband and said, "Shhh, this can be our little secret."

As you all can see, Roy Nelson hasn't been getting knocked out since he entered the octagon. Why? I told him about the great truth.

Chewing gum for 5-6 hours a day will beef up your chin beyond belief. You can work out your neck and shoulders all you want, but you are always going to miss the area that matters most. Since I started my gum regiment I have seen an inch thick layer of muscle form over the area referred to as "the button".

Now, you don't want to over-train your chin so I suggest starting out with less resistance. I am on Bazooka Joe level which has the most gum-resistance, but I began with Fruit Stripe, the fruity zebra gum. Fruit Stripe is almost like chewing on paper. It's very flexible and will get your chin on the move. If you find this resistance to be too weak, then you can move up to Trident or Stride. These are medium resistance gums that will ensure you at least a quarter inch of muscle mass added to your chin. If you think you're ready, the gum with most resistance is Bazooka Joe. This stuff will work your chin into overdrive. Like I said, I do it for 5-6 hours a day and I have seen tremendous results.

The secret to my patent pending regiment is the gum initially burns unwanted calories from your chin, and as the chewing continues and resistance grows, muscle will begin to form. It's very simple and risk free. Just ask Randy Couture:

"I have been on the Trident Layers regiment for 3 years now and I'm 46 years old. How do you think I still compete? 2below's training regiment is more effective than the Tower 200. Let's go princess" - Randy Couture

If you are still skeptical listen to former LHW champ Forrest Griffin:

"Remember when I beat Shogun and Rampage and became LHW champ? And remember when I got KTFO'D by Rashad and Anderson? Well I wasn't on my gum regiment for the latter 2. My chin became weak and I became vulnerable. I started chewing again and beat Tito Ortiz. This is the real deal folks" - Forrest Griffin

This is no joke people. So let's recap.

- Start with a low resistance gum to get your chin used to the training. Don't want to overdo it and cause injury.

- Move up and chew for about 3 hours a day on Trident or Stride. This is when you'll see muscle growth.

- Train for 5-6 hours with Bazooka Joe to maximize results.

I haven't been knocked out, ever, and I've been training since day 1 with this regiment. Burn calories, gain muscle, don't get KTFO. Fool proof system endorsed by MMA veterans.
