UFC 117 - Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Roy took everything Dos Santos could throw, and just smirked. He got wobbly after one of the cuts, but that would be the same punch that put Werdum on his face.

Big props to Roy. Great fight. Tons of respect for the guy.

Nice work Dos Santos, but I think he has some work to do before he goes up against someone like Lesnar.

Cain all the way !

Carwin might pose wrestling threats, but Cain will wear him out no problemo. Cain by KO in round 3 or sooner once they do meet

I don't see a legit contender now after Cain wins. 9 more weeks is it ?

Roy Nelson is a gatekeeper. Nothing more, nothing less. I have been saying this ever since he won Ultimate Fighter. He can pretty much beat anyone at or below Sokodju's level, but that is where it ends. he is the Keith Jardine for the Heavyweight division. I also now think the same may be true for Junior Dos Santos as well.

What a beating Roy took. I havent seen such a beating in a long time. JDS is such a beast, Its unbealiveble. He reminds me a lot of Crocop when he started MMA. After Cain beats Brock he will be the next champ.

This fight went pretty much as expected. Cigano landing lightning fast punches and tagging Nelson repeatedly. The one thing I'd underestimated was Nelson's chin. That was as impressive a display of sticking it out as I've ever seen. Nelson would not go away and even landed a good couple of shots. But Cigano proved he's title shot worthy yet again. He must have the quickest hands in the HW division and when he decided too, his kicks and knees were landing.

Nelson got some more fans, Cigano got the title shot.

But the question mark remains about Cigano on the ground for me. He cannot stop all Lesnar's takedown attempts and I've yet to see him on the ground. But he's a gifted striker with a gas tank, if he does manage to avoid TD's (which I don't think he'll be able to for the whole fight) he'll make Lesnar look silly standing... (yes, it could be Cain as champ by then, but I think Lesnar is gonna take him down, JDS v Cain would be an awesome fight tho)

Yeh JDS hands looked great again. Nelson showed everyone again that he is a very intelligent fighter who can take a good punch and survive. Infact Nelson had opportunities to KO Cigano, but he never landed the bombs that he threw. Nelson used a very good high guard to block JDS' dangerous hands for most of the fight. But it was too little. He was mainly just a punching bag that threw back the occasional haymaker. JDS is lucky he didn't get tagged by one of Nelson's bombs. But Nelson is also lucky that he didn't get KOed by some of JDS assaults especially in the first round.

I enjoyed the fight. And like others have said, JDS is going to have very real problems in the wrestling realm when he faces winner of Cain v. Lesnar. I don't believe that this boxing specialist will do very good against elite Div 1. wrestlers. I'd like to see him KO Cain or Lesnar, but lets face it. You can't KO dudes fighting on your back eating nasty ground and pound all day.

Nelson really took a freakin beating! good for him though hanging in there. can't wait to see nelson vs carwin. my guess is that nelson will get knocked up quickly. carwin has more power.

Nelson lost the fight, but man he gained loads of fans. He just kept coming and coming. Im impressed by how much damage he can absorb, maybe its the belly... Who knows?

It was a hell of a beating and jds showed he can pace himself and not punch out, but somehow i get the feeling it was a defeat in victory for jds, maybe not.......

Great stuff anyways, even though it was a one sided fight i enjoyed it very much.

fail

wrong. that isn't fail, it is the truth.Jardine could beat most people in his weight class until it came to the top-tier contenders. then he got beat. same with Roy Nelson. Don't blame me because your boy is a punching bag.

I wasnt a big nelson fan going into the fight, but he gained my respect. You could tell that he was gassed but he kept his hands up and tried to fight back. JDS will be a future champ but he wont take the crown from Lesnar.
