Was Chael Sonnen rocked when he was submitted?

I've been rewatching the end of the Silva/Sonnen fight multiple times and I think the reason why Sonnen failed to defend that triangle.. again! was cuz he got rocked just before. Just watch it again and tell me what you think.

 

At around 2:30 left in the 5th round, Sonnen seems kinda lazy and just basically sits in Silva's guard. He starts throwing limp punches and Joe Rogan says "he's just gonna keep doing that". Goldberg answers "heh why not?" At this exact moment you see Silva throwing a punch to Sonnen's face.

 

Now you usually don't see people getting rocked from the ground because guys usually stay very close to their opponent to avoid strong punches. If you notice Sonnen keeps throwing punches and at the second he eats that shot he crumbles on Silva's stomach and tries to hide. He stops even trying to do any kind of attack for a couple of seconds he just looks like he's in panic and is franticaly trying to hide his face and that,s when Silva manages to set the triangle.

 

thoughts? Do you think it's possible that Chael got rocked by that punch? just wondering.. cuz it wasn't noticed even by Rogan I think we just don't expect a rocking punch from the bottom so no1 really payed attention.

I saw the same thing, I think he was a little bit messed up and was probably too worried about eating more elbows. Silva didn't go for any submissions the whole night, and Sonnen just got used to that.

It was a good method by Silva.

yeah. you can also see when Silva sets it up I thought it was well thought. He throws that heavy punch. then tries to punch again, then goes for some kind of hook from the right and instead of hitting Sonnen's face he just traps his left arm and thats it. Good way of "camouflaging" the trap.

I dont' think that he was rocked but I think the punch definitely threw him off. You could see that Silva was holding Sonnen's wrist and pushing his arm towards his body setting up the triangle. Then he landed the punch which dropped Sonnen's head down to defend more punches and elbows. As Sonnen was trying to block Silva's punches with his left arm it gave Silva the perfect oppertunity to throw his left leg over and lock it in.

 

I think the punches distracted him but I dont think that he was rocked.

That was my favorite part of the fight, not just because I was for Silva but because no one saw it coming lol. I think the punch did hurt him though, idk if it would have totally affected if anderson got it or not but it still was pretty slick.

LOL all silva did was go for submissions that night, no he wasnt rocked. He had a little blood in his eyes, and he couldnt see and he got hit hard. So considering his vision was impaired im going to say he got hit, and couldnt see well enough to dodge so he layed down in the gaurd. Sonnen has a granite chin, he got hit with the hardest Silva could throw in one of the exchanges(the monster of an elbow) and he kept brawling.

i dont think that was the reason, anderson slapped the triangle prettty fast while Sonnen was too focused on beating his face up, Sonnen just taught it wouldnt happen in one round if it didnt happen in 4, so he got sloppy.

Sonnen set a record for most strikes landed in a 5 round fight yet Anderson wasn't even bloody, Sonnen doesn't have the power to put people away and if he wants to be champ he has to have the gas tank to grind for 5 full rounds.

not jus tthat he was exhausted through the 4th round and he had nothing left in the 5th and was too tired adn Silva knew EXACTLY what he was doing , Sonnen didnt know what was happening anymore and lost. Silva has more energy going into the 5th adn capatilized. Granted it was lucky Silva pulled it off and no mistakes happenend but he was setting that triangle up right through the 5th round and he looked way more in control than Sonnen in the 5th.
