The Octagon

Well, since everyone else failed to state the obvious, I guess I'll take care of it.

You basically answered the question yourself. The UFC uses an Octagon, or an 8 sided shape, as their cage. It is also the only organization that uses this shape.

Cool? Cool.

Not true. ImpactFC just used an Octagon shaped cage last month in Australia. Not sure if the dimensions were the same, looked fairly close, but their cage definitely had 8 sides.

The UFC has trademarked the term "Octagon" atleast when it comes to a cage and MMA. Promotions are still able to use an octagonal shaped cage, but they are not legally allowed to call it or refer to it as the/an "Octagon."

Well ya see. This thread now has a new, or at least a more in-depth purpose.

I guess I had confused my facts when it came to trademarking the term 'Octagon', and not the cage itself.

Thanks for the heads up, sir.

The guy above is correct,

The octagon is a UFC developed standard shape, size and materials.

I know they allow several other orgainsations to use the exact same ring/octagon but it can only be called "the octagon" in the ufc everyone else can must refer to it as a cage or ring etc.

They did this to promote consistency in MMA so I imagine any org can use it as long as they don't refer to it as a octagon.

Just had a small chuckle on the thought of an announcer calling it an "8 Sided Cage" over and over, becoming frustrated, flipping over the table, and steam off screaming "God damnit why the f*ck can't I just call it a f*ckin Octagon!"

Np.. I always thought the same thing until I saw the ImpactFC event last month. I could swear I remember reading an article or something someone posted saying no other promotion is allowed to use an 8 sided cage. I'm pretty sure that's why I always believed that as well. But when you think about it, how can they trademark a mere shape?

The name is what they trademarked, not the shape itself. It's easy to get it mixed up though. You automatically associate the shape with the name, and think it's one in the same and that they're both trademarked. But I found out that's not the case.

Yes. I began watching the UFC in July 2009. So I think I know what I am talking about. I just dont understand why they call it the octagon. Is it because there are 8 sides?

Next question: Why do they call the gloves "four ounce gloves?" Is that how much they weigh or something?
