The Steroid Debate! What side are you on?

Steroids and professional sports go together like french fires and ketchup (or mayonnaise in Europe) but it has always been underground, hidden under the rug if you will. With the recent news about Shane Carwin being named as one of the athletes who ordered steroids from Applied Pharmacy Services, an Alabama based pharmaceuticals manufacturer it brings this debate out in the open - at least for MMA. Carwin is the latest in a series of MMA fighters who have either tested positive for banned substances or have been involved with it. What is shocking is that Carwin has always tested clean for steroids so is it possible that he was on the juice and is very good at cycling it? I guess anything is possible.

In a recent interview with Mike Straka, UFC veteran Ken Shamrock had this to say:

Cycling steroids will not make AAS metabolites disappear from your body like magic. Depending on what compound he allegedly has used, metabolites could be present and make a person test positive as long as a year after they last used.

Ignorance.

What side am I on?

I don't care if pros use steroids.

This will always come up at this level of professional sports. If it's not steroids it will be some other version of "enhancement" drugs. I understand why these guys take this stuff but it's a huge risk; one I wouldn't take myself given my current situation and place in life. None of us on this board are professional athletes however and don't FULLY understand all the reasons for doing what they choose to do.

I will say this. If I was to take Steroids I wouldn't be able to walk on a professional baseball field and hit 45 home runs per year nor would I be able to beat everyone in the LHW division of the UFC. While this drug likely produces "an edge" you still have to be an athlete to compete at the levels of a professional.

Im not pointing the finger at anyone in particular...

anyone that uses/abuses steroids for NON-MEDICAL reasons

just to enhance (unaturally) their performance are cowards!

*there are medical reason for steriod usage*

just my opinion...

:)

+1

How can anyone feel like a champ if the cheated to get there.

Define the word Coward, and then put it into context of people who use them for sports or physique enhancement.

How does steroid use make someone a coward?

Stupid commen bro, stupid.

The problem is non-strict regulation/lack of reasons to not use. If it means millions upon millions of dollars earned and when you're competing against others on the juice "with an edge" it makes things less black and white than they'd be if there were better ways to regulate it/make its use non-desireable. I'm not saying I know the way for it to be regulated but then again I'm not appointed in a position to think about these things either.

kinda funny because Carwin was knocking Brock's antics as a champ...saying he stands for more than what Brock does (around 100)...

I agree, brocks size raises questions but he has never been caught or linked to steroids so he deserves the benefit of the doubt. I would perfer a prick to a juicer any day to represent our sport.

Because Brock was acting like a chimp and was rageing in the cage even after the fight like the stereotypical roid abuser.

He acted like a total dutch bag, an dShane called him out on it.

Brock has used steroids too, so who gives a ****?

The benefit of the doubt? Has was a lean 295lbs in the WWE. There's no doubt in my mind.

If there is in yours then you are turning your head.

coward: someone who lacks courage.

my def in context: someone who is scared to train hard, eat

healthy and reap the rewards of said actions legitimately...

if your opinion differs? fine.

P.S. watch how you use "stupid" around me.

I'll use "stupid" around you as much as I feel because it's warranted. Perhaps ignorant should be more appropriate.

Anyone who uses steroids and doesn't work hard won't get results either. Steroid will only enhance results if you work hard and diet properly.

Your STUPID misconception about steroids being a magic potion is ridiculous.

Steroids, without working hard will actually have a negative impact on your performance.

Steroids do not increase your cardio (and typically reduces it). Steroids will not increase your strength unless you workout or do strenuous activity.

Do you even know what AAS even does? Specifically, I mean. Do you know what it causes to happen that is a benefit?

You saying someone is a "coward" for using steroids and in turn thinks that they can use them and get where they need to be without working hard is completely stupid and ignorant.

Admit it, you don't really know **** about steroids.

WWE isn't a competitive sport, so does it really matter if you use roids when the outcome is predetermined? and unless you stuck a needle in Brock's **** then you don't know jack...

he has the benefit of the doubt regarding roid use in MMA...until i see a failed test or see him linked to roids (like Carwin has been) he is clean in my book...

I am extremely opposed to Steroid use in sports and in general.

It is not healthy, and for a sport that is not very healthy in general, there's no need to add more risks :-)

It kills fair play, and should be banned for ever.

And yes, I'll be happy to see less spectacular performance, knowing that the athlets are healthy and clean.

OMG, its so good to see someone who actually knows what he is talking about. I hate the fact that people act like you can take 500mg of cypionate a week and do nothing and then tah dah---your a world class athlete. What people dont know is a huge population of gym goers are on some kind of anabolic steroids. In fact, those are the biggest users--not athletes, just common everyday people trying to look better.

I often tell people who say its cheating this--if steroids is cheating to you then stop driving to work and start walking bc the car is the steroid. You can achieve the same goal by walking but a car just speeds up the process. You can hunt your food if you want but wouldnt you rather buy it.

People use things every single day of there lives to take short cuts and speed up the process of things but get all shocked & shaken when athletes do the exact same thing. Fact is, supplements of any kind give you an "UNNATURAL" strength so by that definition all GNC's should stop selling 40% of their products.

That picture says it all. He was ab****ely monstrous in that picture. Shane in his picture is even pretty huge.

I don't doubt for a second that Shane and Brock both have used steroids in the past.

I love Brock's bloated appearance there as well. Definitely water retention caused by AAS use.

Look, I know bodybuilding, I know the UG scene, I know people behind the scenes who deal with this kind of stuff on a daily basis, I used to be one of them. 5 years ago, before ORD, I could have told you who bought from which guy. I can spot a juicer (even if they are relatively small) from a mile away. There are certain aspects of a physique that steroids enhance more noticably beyond other body parts in a short period of time. Those over-developed imbalances in a physique are a dead giveaway nearly every time.
