The Steroid Files ? Part 1

 

I could have gone with an equally epic title ? The Steroid Diaries, but I don?t want to be associated with the teenage vampire genre (ever). The Steroid Files makes it sound like a big government conspiracy ? which it obviously is not- like the X-Files, makes it sound more sinister, more pulpy, more interesting. So without further ado let?s take a look at some of the big name steroid abusers (alleged) in MMA.

 

Josh Barnett, the big daddy of steroid scandals, the man responsible for bringing down an entire MMA promotion, became the youngest UFC Heavyweight champion after he beat Randy Couture in 2002 but was stripped off the title after he tested positive for steroids. The next four and a half years were busy for him as he fought exclusively in Japan where testing is almost frowned upon. He didn?t fight again in the US until Pride 32 in October 2006. However the MMA promotion destroyer moment did not happen until a couple years later in 2009. He was the main event on the Affliction card, supposed to face Fedor Emelianenko when he tested positive for Drostanolone, an anabolic steroid, and the fight was called off, the whole card was canceled, and the promotion folded as they could not sustain the losses.
